Dieses Welterfassen bezieht ausdrücklich die schmerzvollen und fremden Aspekte des Lebens ein: Hässliches, Krankheit, Trieb und Tod. Im späten Werk (1912-22) verleiht er seiner Lebensbejahung in den Zyklen Duineser Elegien und Die Sonette an Orpheus poetische Gestalt und bezieht sich auf das ganze, Leben und Tod umgreifende Dasein. Die Gedichte der letzten Jahre zerfallen in unterschiedliche Gruppen: einerseits heiter-entspannte, oft lakonisch-pointierte Natur- und Landschaftsgedichte, andererseits poetisch kühne Experimente, die rein aus der Sprache herausgearbeitet sind.
