Book excerpt: For this second book in the Transport Philately series on public transport issues featured on postage stamps, once again the author will combine two of his lifelong hobbies as he looks at railways around the world on standard gauge tracks that encompasses the majority of the western worlds major railway arteries. The book will also illustrate railways on other, similar gauges of track where they constitute a country's major arteries, but it is not an exhaustive survey encompassing every country and every issue for that one needs to refer to major catalog issues by such well-known authorities as Stanley Gibbons Plc.There have been many and varied reasons why postal authorities have issued stamps featuring railway subjects, varying from major anniversaries to national pride, the latter often from the former Eastern-bloc countries but that is not by all means. The Royal Mail in the UK has certainly not ignored railways, especially in later years, and the author will visit probably more of his native country's stamps than most other countries', but he's biased. The author often looks in his albums to try to understand why a particular country will sometimes be represented by bulging sections, while others are represented by but one or two stamps. And so, the book follows the story around the world in roughly an eastern journey, learning about some of the national histories on the way and admiring the attentions of some extremely accomplished artists that mean philatelists and rail-lovers alike can enjoy many beautiful miniature works of art.

Book excerpt: This, the first of four books, looks at the treatment of varying aspects of public transport with the aid of postage stamps, either issued by the postal authorities of most of the worlds nations, or some of the railway companies themselves, especially heritage operators. It has long intrigued the author as to why narrow gauge systems throughout the world have demanded a far greater attention from the public and stamp producers than railway subjects from the standard gauge lines, which make up the vast majority of the western worlds major railway systems. The conclusion he has reached is that in most cases they are considered cute a truly abominable term, which is (thankfully) gradually fading from our vocabulary, but just how the author felt on first seeing engines of the Talyllyn Railway, in mid-Wales, from the top of the station approach at Tywyns Wharf Station: tiny little kettles in sparkling, rich green and lots of brass. The Talyllyn has the double honor of being the worlds first railway to be taken-over and operated by a preservation society in 1951, and also the first railway in the modern era to issue its own Railway Letter Service stamps, a practice that can be traced back to the very earliest of times, which allowed people in outlying areas to send letters by the railways to the nearest post office for onward transport. The Talyllyns first stamps were issued in 1957, and today the lucky collector can demand a substantial premium on the paltry issue value. From whatever origin or country, there is a huge variety of stamps covering narrow gauge railways, and usually they are attractive miniature works of art that make them very collectable. The author has not set out to cover every country or issue in these books, but to present a wide selection of those stamps that are note-worthy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1889 uniformed post-boys were discovered moonlighting in a West End brothel frequented by men of the upper classes. "The Cleveland Street Scandal" erupted and Victorian Britain faced the possibility that the Post Office-a bureaucratic backbone of nation and empire-was inspiring and servicing subversive sexual behavior. However, the unlikely alliance between sex and the postal service was not exactly the news the sensational press made it out to be. Postal Pleasures explores the relationship between illicit sex and the Royal Mail from reforms initiated in 1840 up to the imperial end of the nineteenth century. With a combination of historical details and literary analyses, Kate Thomas illustrates how the postal network, its uniformed employees, and its material trappings-envelopes, postmarks, stamps-were used to signal and circulate sexual intrigue. For many, the idea of an envelope promiscuously jostling its neighbors in a post boy's bag, or the notion that secrets passed through the eyes and fingers of telegraph girls, was more stimulating than the actual contents of correspondence. Writers like Anthony Trollope, Eliza Lynn Lynton, Henry James, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, and others, invoked the postal system as both an instrument and a metaphor for sexual relations that crossed and double-crossed lines of class, marriage, and heterosexuality. Postal Pleasures adds a new dimension to studies of the era as it uncovers the unlikely linkage between the Victorian Post Office and the queer networks it inspired.

Book excerpt: Journey Through A Woe--Filled Past is the story of a family, my family, that lived through the terror of Hitler's war-torn Germany. Most of my family survived the horrific bombardment of Dresden, capital of Germany's state of Saxony, in the night of February 13 - 14, 1945. Then almost five, I still have the occasional nightmare of stepping out into the raging firestorm when our home, too, was hit by bombs. By March 1945, the family had found shelter in Graupa, near Dresden, where the composer, Richard Wagner, wrote parts of his Lohengrin. The brutal war in the spring of 1945 had almost run its course. In the coming month another crucial event, the entrance of the conquering Russian Army into the quiet little town would have consequences for decades to come. Food and any consumer goods all but disappeared from the stores\' shelves. An elderly couple died of starvation during the particularly severe winter of 1945 - 1946. Saxony became a part of the German Democratic Republic--Communist East Germany. Mother as so many others lost her teaching job and worked on a farm and nursery to put some food on our bare table. After four years, the District Superintendent of Schools summoned Mother to the county seat and offered a return to the classroom. All she had to do was join the communist party and take some courses--indoctrination into communism! Her resolve to flee to the West suddenly became rock solid when the superintendent ended the interview with, "we have been watching you and know you have a ten-year old daughter. Don't worry, we will take good care of her while you are away for your courses."
