Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Signal Engineering (Mechanical) The signalling of railways has developed rapidly, more especially during comparatively recent years, until it is now one of the most important branches of the Engineering Department. On its efficiency depends to a large extent the safety of the travelling public. That the Board of Trade recognises this fact is evidenced by the strict supervision which it exercises over the signalling of railways and the careful inspection made of new signalling installations. The demand of the public for greater facilities both for travelling and for merchandise, involving a greater density of traffic, has added to the complexity of railway working, while the modern necessity for speed and for heavier and longer trains has still further increased the difficulties which beset the signal engineer in providing immunity from accident. The advance in signal engineering practice has, however, been commensurate with the advance of railways. The efficiency of the system adopted on British railways may be gauged by the few accidents which occur compared with the enormous number of train movements, and of these accidents the majority are due not so much to any deficiency in'the system as to the personal equation, which unfortunately cannot be entirely eliminated. Book excerpt: From the 1830s to today, the railroad industry has developed myriad complex mechanisms to help keep North America’s railroad rights-of-ways safe, efficient, and relatively accident-free. In this paperback rerelease of the successful 2003 title, the otherwise-arcane world of railroad signaling is explained in concise language and brought to life with nearly 200 fantastic photographs that depict signaling history and all aspects of modern operations. Author and photographer Brian Solomon brings his wealth of knowledge and photographic talent to a subject that has not often been tackled in book form, yet is integral to the American railroad experience.
Book Synopsis Practical Railway Engineering by : Clifford F. Bonnett
Download or read book Practical Railway Engineering written by Clifford F. Bonnett and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook covers the very wide spectrum of all aspects of railway engineering for all engineering disciplines, in a 'broad brush' way giving a good overall knowledge of what is involved in planning, designing, constructing and maintaining a railway. It covers all types of railway systems including light rail and metro as well as main line. The first edition has proved very popular both with students new to railways and with practicing engineers who need to work in this newly expanding area.In the second edition, the illustrations have been improved and brought up to date, particularly with the introduction of 30 colour pages which include many newly taken photographs. The text has been reviewed for present day accuracy and, where necessary, has been modified or expanded to include reference to recent trends or developments. New topics include automatic train control, level crossings, dot matrix indicators, measures for the mobility impaired, reinforced earth structures, air conditioning, etc. Recent railway experience, both technical and political, has also been reflected in the commentary.

Book Synopsis Classic Railroad Signals by : Brian Solomon
Download or read book Classic Railroad Signals written by Brian Solomon and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history, quirks, and stories behind signals with gorgeous period and contemprary photography. Railroad signals are the link between the steam era and modern railroading. Designed for reliability and durability, signals can survive for decades. In fact, old semaphores installed during the early years of the twentieth century were still in service during the 1990s, protecting trains that were running with the latest modern diesels. Even searchlight-style signals that were the epitome of 1940s railroading continue to work today. Though standards were introduced in the early twentieth century, interpretation varied greatly among railroads, so even major railroads have individualized signals. Some, such as the Pennsylvania Railroad, were noted for their distinctive signaling hardware. Others lines became known for their peculiarities in practice. Classic Railroad Signals examines how different railroads developed specific hardware to serve their unique needs, in the process tracing the lineage of various types of hardware and highlighting how and where they were used. From nineteenth-century mechanical signals to disc signals, upper- and lower-quadrant semaphores, three-light electric signals, searchlight-style targets, positional lights, and color-position light hardware, author Brian Solomon covers nearly every conceivable piece of North American signaling hardware, even the virtually extinct wig wag that was once standard in California and Wisconsin. Gorgeous period and contemprary photography shows signals and trains from around North America. Classic Railroad Signals should be next to Railroad Signaling on every railroad fan's bookshelf.
