Book Synopsis Unlocking the Potential of Railways by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Unlocking the Potential of Railways written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 25,000 kilometers of railway corridors connect countries within the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) region. CAREC countries export mostly to the European Union (33% of exports in 2015) and the People's Republic of China (19%), but growing export-import activity is underserved. The rail network does not match changing trade patterns. Improved rail service quality is needed to facilitate regional cooperation. This publication provides a blueprint for sound, long-term development of CAREC railways into a quick, efficient, and accessible transport system. The 2017-2030 CAREC railway strategy intends to equip the region's railways to better capture evolving trade flows and contribute to regional economic development by improving rail and multimodal infrastructure and commercializing and reforming railway activities.

Download or read book Soviet Railways to Russian Railways written by J. Westwood and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the postsoviet decade Russian railways remained highly centralised, evaded the upheavals of mass privatisation, and remained the backbone of a demoralised economy. Preserving much of Soviet practice, the Railways Ministry mounted a skilled rearguard action that achieved a gradual and considered adaptation to the market economy rather than the pell-mell, western-orientated, liberalisation that afflicted other branches of the economy. This book describes that rearguard action, and goes on to show how railway managers are coping with the new conditions.

Book excerpt: Soviet Central Asia (1989) explores the economic development of the four republics of Central Asia that suffered under Moscow0́9s economic policies 0́3 Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kirghizia. The Soviet literary weekly Literaturnaia gazeta described Soviet economic policies there as a 0́8tragic experiment0́9, and this book argues that Central Asia serves as a prime example of the failure of Soviet regional development policies. It analyses the special role of the region in the Soviet economy and such key issues as industrial development, cotton production, water resources and labour. It also addresses the social ramifications of the underdevelopment of the region0́9s economy and the impact of new policies under Gorbachev.
