Book excerpt: The people of Lokas village, in the land of Gravick, have been at war with their neighbors for generations. Just when peace seems to be finally settling over them they are once again under attack, from an enemy long considered myth. Shatala, the power hungry empress of Zutar, will stop at nothing to bring Gravick and other rebellious lands back under her empire’s rule. After striking a deal with the Circle of Five, a powerful group of mages, she can finally see her plans coming to fruition. For Lars, son of the greatest Lokan warrior, his world is about to change in ways he can not yet understand. This new threat is just one of many that are coming to his people, and is more powerful than he can possibly imagine. Towns and cities are destroyed, their people slaughtered and scattered, blood running freely in the streets. For Lars and his people, considered primitive by many, time is short. An ancient weapon, its purpose and use long forgotten, is all the people of Lokas have at their disposal to counter this new threat. To wield it they will need the help of others, many of whom they once called enemies.

The souls trapped there seem more distraught than usual and what Lars discovers from them makes him determined to find a way to set them free. Meanwhile, across the oceans, an army sets sail, intent on destroying Ragal and reclaiming their birthright. King Zief, learning of their approach to his lands, feels the need to have Ragal better protected. Keeping this news secret Zief plans for the coming battle. As Lars continues with his lessons the king also places on him the burden of perfecting weapons that have already killed men far more experienced in that field than him. With his lessons, his determination to free the souls, and now the weapons to try and improve, Lars also has to deal with deciet and lies form House Corban and his beloved Amelia. And war his coming, which Lars will be drawn into whether he wishes it or not. If Ragal is to survive, Lars must work with people he has come to despise and try and force a peace between them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the important moral ideas of the modern world are based on the key biblical verses analyzed in this collection. What generally happens when someone picks up a copy of the Bible? Often it is put down within seconds because readers see endless verses which turn them off. Finally, here is an accessible book about the Bible that focuses on its great moral principles: --Human beings are created in the image of God. --"Love your neighbor as yourself." --"You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor." --"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." --"Justice, justice shall you pursue." Dov Peretz Elkins believes that if a reader understands fifty verses of the five thousand in the Bible (only 1 percent), he or she will begin to grasp the essence of the Bible. This remarkable explanation of the Bible shows readers how it can serve as a light that illuminates a path through the confusion and problems in their personal and communal lives. The result is a life that is better and more serious--a life with meaning, purpose, and direction. The Bible's Top 50 Ideas: --Presents the Bible's essential ideas in readable, engaging fashion. --Focuses on the contemporary value of the Bible. --Uses commentaries and explanations from sources that are modern as well as ancient, Christian as well as Jewish, and popular as well as scholarly. Elkins not only simplifies the Bible but also demonstrates how its fundamental ideas and concepts have inspired four thousand years of civilization to follow its teachings. The result is a moral, legal, and literary foundation that remains the basis of all democratic and principled societies to this day.

Book excerpt: This festschrift is situated within the contexts of the 'Writing Culture' debate, the 'Rhetoric Culture' project, and the legacy of anthropologist Stephen Tyler's work on language and representation. While Writing Culture (1986) alerted readers to the power of ethnographers over their field, Writing in the Field alerts readers to the power of the field over its ethnographers. Rather than reprise familiar debates about writing and representation, the book's individual chapters elucidate how anthropological fieldwork is a highly fraught, provisional, and incomplete practice enmeshed in the gaps between self and the other. The book's emphasis on the concepts of pathos, epiphany, and dissociation is developed through essays that are personal, yet not merely subjective, for they draw on and contribute to deep traditions of thinking about culture and rhetoric. (Series: Ethnologie: Forschung und Wissenschaft - Vol. 24) *** "This fine collection of essays is a fitting tribute to the positive influence of Stephen Tyler, an original and influential anthropologist of protean gifts." - E. Douglas Lewis, School of Social and Political Sciences, U. of MelbourneÃ?Â?

Book excerpt: MUL.APIN, written sometime before the 8th century BC, was the most widely copied astronomical text in ancient Mesopotamia: a compendium including information such as star lists, descriptions of planetary phases, mathematical schemes for the length of day and night, a discussion of the luni-solar calendar and rules for intercalation, and a short collection of celestial omens. This book contains an introductory essay, followed by a new edition of the text and a facing-page transliteration and English translation. Finally, the book contains a new and detailed commentary on the text. This is a fascinating study, and an important resource for anyone interested in the history of astronomy.
