Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scintigraphic imaging with radiolabeled blood elements has continued to be a useful diagnostic modality. The major trust of recent investigation has been in simplifying labeling techniques and developing new agents that will label blood elements selectively in vitro. The VI Symposium of the International Society of Radiolabeled Blood Elements was held in Barcelona (Spain) during November 23 to 27, 1992.The conference was sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, the USA Department of Energy and the Spanish National Health Service. This monograph comprises articles that represent most of the 85 papers (70 oral and 15 posters) presented during the symposium. The meeting was attended by 110 investigators hailed from 21 countries. Although lllIn-oxine and 99mTc-HMPAO remain the choice agents for labeling blood components for routine applications, there was heavy emphasis on developing new labeling agents that will either simplify the in vitro labeling procedure, or, even better, will label blood components selectively in vivo, by injecting the radioactive agents directly into patients. The degree of success in imaging target lesions in humans by using these agents has been excellent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive Tracers in Biology: An Introduction to Trace Methodology, Second Edition focuses on the biochemical and physiological aspects of tracer research, including medical applications of tracer techniques, radioactivity, radiation hazards, and radioactive isotopes. The book first offers information on atomic nuclei, radioactivity, and the production of radioactive isotopes and radiation characteristics of tracer atoms. Discussions focus on nuclear reactions, neutron-induced and deuteron-induced transmutations, properties of atomic nuclei, and target techniques and radiochemistry. The manuscript also ponders on the procedures for radioactive assay and radiation hazards. The text examines the biochemical, medical, and physiological applications of tracer methodology. The manuscript also takes a look at radioactive hydrogen, short-lived and long-lived radioactive carbon, radioactive phosphorus and sulfur, and alkali metal and alkaline earth tracers. Topics include synthesis of organic intermediates for tracer carbon studies; biosynthesis of labeled carbon compounds; and general survey of alkali metal tracers. The publication is a dependable reference for readers interested in radioactive tracers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemical transparency of the human body is at the doorstep of advanced technology. Toward this goal the book describes relevant isotopic tracer techniques of nuclear medicine. It deals with quantitatively measuring in vivo biochemical reactions as they occur within homeostatic circuits under control by genes and protein interactions. The text indicates how nuclear medicine can aid clinical researchers and practitioners, human geneticists and pharmacologists in understanding (and affecting) gene-phenotype relationships. Experts give background, techniques and examples in an interdisciplinary approach to regional imaging and in vitro analyses of biochemical reactions.

Book excerpt: Radioactive isotopes and enriched stable isotopes are used widely in medicine, agriculture, industry, and science, where their application allows us to perform many tasks more accurately, more simply, less expensively, and more quickly than would otherwise be possible. Indeed, in many casesâ€"for example, biological tracersâ€"there is no alternative. In a stellar example of "technology transfer" that began before the term was popular, the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors has supported the development and application of isotopes and their transfer to the private sector. The DOE is now at an important crossroads: Isotope production has suffered as support for DOE's laboratories has declined. In response to a DOE request, this book is an intensive examination of isotope production and availability, including the education and training of those who will be needed to sustain the flow of radioactive and stable materials from their sources to the laboratories and medical care facilities in which they are used. Chapters include an examination of enriched stable isotopes; reactor and accelerator-produced radionuclides; partnerships among industries, national laboratories, and universities; and national isotope policy.

Book excerpt: Radiotherapy remains a major non-surgical treatment modality for malignant disease, and an understanding of how this treatment works is essential in ensuring optimum practice. Trainees in oncology learn about ionising radiation, but to understand it fully they must also understand the physics relevant to its use in therapy. This book is written specifically for the oncology and radiation team, supporting clinical oncologists in their understanding of the science which underpins radiotherapy. It begins with basic concepts and then explores the principles and practice of physics as it relates to radiotherapy, including discussion of specific types of therapy. Written by authors chosen for their expertise in in their respective fields, and aligned to the Royal College of Radiologists FRCR Curriculum in Oncology, this volume will provide an excellent source of information for trainee and practicing oncologists, and wider radiotherapy teams. This second edition has been fully updated to reflect advances in technology and the increased complexity in modern radiotherapy, including two new chapters on imaging and a new brachytherapy chapter.
