Book Synopsis Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphic Rocks in the Dabieshan-Sulu Region of China by : Cong Bolin
Download or read book Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphic Rocks in the Dabieshan-Sulu Region of China written by Cong Bolin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent discoveries of diamond and coesite in the ultrahigh- pressure (UHP) metamorphosed supracrustal rocks have provoked a new challenge to present-day geodynamic ideas. A worldwide shift towards a new paradigm on the Earth's dynamics is imminent. Facing the new challenge, Chinese geologists have been taking an active role. The Dabieshan-Sulu region, the largest and best exposed UHP belt in the world, has attracted international attention. This comprehensive book describes many aspects of the UHP rocks in the Dabieshan-Sulu region, including the geotectonic setting, mode of occurrence, mineralogy and petrology, isotope chronology, major and trace element chemistry, and metamorphic PTt path. The possible geodynamic mechanisms involved in the deep subduction and rapid exhumation of UHP rocks are also discussed. This book will be of particular interest to researchers and graduate students of metamorphic petrology and global tectonics.
Book Synopsis The Great Paleozoic Crisis by : Douglas H. Erwin
Download or read book The Great Paleozoic Crisis written by Douglas H. Erwin and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of more than fifty years of research by the foremost living expert on plant classification, Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants is an important contribution to the field of plant taxonomy. In the last decade, the system of classifying plants has been thoroughly revised. Instead of describing every individual family, Takhtajan includes descriptions in keys to families, which he calls "descriptive keys." The advantage of descriptive keys is that they give both the characteristic features of the families and their differences. The delimitation of families and orders drastically differs from the one accepted by the Englerian school and from the one accepted in Arthur Cronquist's system. Takhtajan favors the smaller, more natural families and orders, which are more coherent and better-defined, where characters are easily grasped, and which are more suitable for information retrieval and phylogenetic studies, including cladistic analysis (because it reduces polymorphic codings).
Book Synopsis Divination, Mythology and Monarchy in Han China by : Michael Loewe
Download or read book Divination, Mythology and Monarchy in Han China written by Michael Loewe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-09-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese empires were established by force of arms, but sustained by religious rites and intellectual theory. The four centuries from 206 BC to AD 220 witnessed major changes in the state cults and the concepts of monarchy, while various techniques of divination were used to forecast the future or to solve immediate problems. Michael Loewe examines these changes and the links between religion and statecraft. While both mythology and the traditions nurtured by the learned affected the concept and practice of monarchy throughout the period, the political and social weaknesses of the last century of Han rule bring into question the success that was achieved by the imperial ideal. Nevertheless, that ideal and its institutions were of prime importance for the understanding of Han times and for the influence they exercised on China's later dynasties.
Book Synopsis The Palaeobiogeography of China by : Hongfu Yin
Download or read book The Palaeobiogeography of China written by Hongfu Yin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes accessible to a wide readership, unique and important research on the biology and geological history of China. Previously only available in Chinese, this information provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of the biogeography of all major groups of fossil organisms throughout the Phanerozoic. The book incorporates the latest ideas on global tectonics and ancient climate belts for evaluating how the complex geological history of China has affected organic distributions. Each geological period is considered individually, as are the different regions of China. Readers will find out what organisms inhabited the ancient seas and lands of China, the conditions in which they lived, and when and how the disintegration of Gondwanaland and the accretion of Eurasia led to the formation of modern China. A fascinating look at one of little-known areas of the modern world, this book is indispensable for anyone interested in China and the earth sciences in general.

Book Synopsis Sources of Western Zhou History by : Edward L. Shaughnessy
Download or read book Sources of Western Zhou History written by Edward L. Shaughnessy and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-01-08 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thousands of ritual bronze vessels discovered by China's archaeologists serve as the major documentary source for the Western Zhou dynasty (1045-771 B.C.). These vessels contain long inscriptions full of detail on subjects as diverse as the military history of the period, the bureaucratic structure of the royal court, and lawsuits among the gentry. Moreover, being cast in bronze, the inscriptions preserve exactly the contemporary script and language. Shaughnessy has written a meticulous and detailed work on the historiography and interpretation of these objects. By demonstrating how the inscriptions are read and interpreted, Shaughnessy makes accessible in English some of the most important evidence about life in ancient China.

Book Synopsis Global Change and Human Mobility by : Josefina Domínguez-Mujica
Download or read book Global Change and Human Mobility written by Josefina Domínguez-Mujica and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the benefits of applying a new interdisciplinary approach that combines global change and human mobility. The term "globility" was coined in the year 2000 when the commission with the same name was created by the International Geographical Union with the purpose of theorizing about and asserting the concept of human mobility. First the book offers theoretical reviews of human mobility. Then it proceeds to study patterns of mobility in today's world as it faces new challenges in migration policies (including border controls, management of refugee movements, social initiatives to empower unauthorized immigrants), the integration issue, environmental hazards, and so on. The response to these diverse challenges reveals an increasing fluidity of human mobility and new forms of engagement of people on the move. Readers will obtain a better understanding of current human mobility from a large number of regions and from different thematic perspectives.
