Esta normativa obliga al establecimiento de un control de calidad en las exploraciones radiológicas que abarque aspectos de calidad de imagen y nivel de dosis en cada exploración, evaluado por medio de los niveles de referencia para el diagnóstico (NRD). En el campo de la radiología dental, no se habían desarrollado técnicas de medición de dosis sobre paciente en las exploraciones de ortopantomografía (OPM) y de telerradiografía lateral de cráneo (TLC) aplicables a la determinación de NRD, se carecía en España de estudios de dosis amplios sobre paciente de las exploraciones estudiadas (intraoral, OPM y TLC) y no se habían definido criterios de calidad de imagen basados en detalles anatómicos. En radiología intraoral se midieron dosis en 307 instalaciones recomendándose un valor de 3 mGy como NRD. Se elaboró una propuesta de calidad que incluye criterios de imagen, NRD y detalles técnicos en la realización de la exploración. Las técnicas de medición de dosis desarrolladas para OPM fueron utilizadas en el estudio de 12 instalaciones sobre 190 pacientes. Permitiendo proponer un NRD de 700 mGy medida en la zona occipital. El estudio de la distribución de dosis en localizaciones simétricas permitió encontrar asimetrías que se justifican por el movimiento irregular del conjunto foco emisor-receptor durante la exploración, efecto que puede ser usado para la evaluación del control de calidad de equipos. Se definieron criterios de calidad de imagen siguiendo el modelo utilizado en radiología periapical. La técnica para la determinación de dosis en TLC, fue utilizada en un estudio sobre 7 instalaciones con una muestra de 523 pacientes, permitió recomendar un NRD de 400 mGy medido en el punto porion en piel. Los criterios de calidad de imagen se desarrollaron para su uso con diversas técnicas de análisis cefalométrico.
