Book excerpt: "Radio Iris has a lovely, eerie, anxious quality to it. Iris's observations are funny, and the story has a dramatic otherworldly payoff that is unexpected and triumphant." —Deb Olin Unferth, The New York Times Book Review "A noirish nod to the monotony of work." —O: The Oprah Magazine "Kinney is a Southern California Camus." —Los Angeles Magazine "'The Office' as scripted by Kafka." —Minneapolis Star-Tribune "[An] astute evocation of office weirdness and malaise." —The Wall Street Journal Radio Iris follows Iris Finch, a twentysomething socially awkward daydreamer and receptionist at Larmax, Inc., a company whose true function she doesn’t understand (though she’s heard her boss refer to himself as “a businessman”). Gradually, her boss’ erratic behavior becomes even more erratic, her coworkers begin disappearing, the phone stops ringing, making her role at Larmax moot, and a mysterious man appears to be living in the office suite next door. Radio Iris is an ambient, eerie dream of a novel, written with remarkable precision and grace that could also serve as an appropriate allegory for our modern recession. Anne-Marie Kinney’s short fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in Indiana Review, Black Clock, Keyhole, and Satellite Fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The joint NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission is a splendid example of how international cooperation can produce a wealth of scientific return that could not be afforded by the programs of any partner alone. ESA contributed the Titan atmosphere entry probe and NASA the orbiter spacecraft, the launch, and operations. Various national agencies contributed to the payloads of both the orbiter and the entry probe. Cassini will return much more information than the Galileo mission. While Saturn is further from the Sun than Jupiter, with less illumination and a colder environment, Saturn’s weaker radiation belt permits longer periods of observation close to Saturn than were possible with Galileo at Jupiter. Cassini provides shorter period orbits, closer images of the rings and the atmosphere, and many more satellite encounters, in fact 44 encounters with Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, in the first four years in orbit. This greater number of observations provides a rich scientific bonanza for the remote sensing instruments on Cassini. This book is the third and last volume of this compendium on the Cassini-Huygens mission. This volume describes the remote sensing investigations on the Cassini orbiter: radio science, radar, visible and near infrared spectroscopy, far infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and visible imagery. This book is of interest to all potential users of the Cassini-Huygens data, to those who wish to learn about the planned scientific return from the Cassini-Huygens mission, and those curious about the processes occurring on this most fascinating planet.

Book excerpt: Dark Music showcases Mike Trial's range of imagination in five short stories, all with the common thread of music: Pan, the deposed god of the world, was also the god of music. When he played his syrinx the nymphs danced for the pure joy of being alive. But Pan was a moody god and would sometimes lead the unwary down paths to their own destruction. Pan is gone now. Or is he? Perhaps he still exists. Music can soothe, but it can also seduce and destroy.

Book excerpt: It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the European Conference on Wireless Sensor Networks 2010 (EWSN 2010). As the field of wireless sensor networks matures, new design concepts, experim- tal and theoretical findings, and applications have continued to emerge at a rapid pace. As one of the leading international conferences in this area, EWSN has played a s- stantial role in the dissemination of innovative research ideas from researchers all over the globe. EWSN 2010 was organized by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, during February 17–19, 2010 and it was the seventh meeting in this series. Previous events were held in Berlin (Germany) in 2004, Istanbul (Turkey) in 2005, Zurich (Switz- land) in 2006, Delft (The Netherlands) in 2007, and Cork (Ireland) in 2009. A high-quality selection of papers made up EWSN 2010. Based on the reviews and the recommendations from the four live TPC discussions, we selected a total of 21 papers from 109 submissions (19.26% acceptance rate) for EWSN 2010. Topics of interest included hardware design and implementation, operating systems and so- ware, middleware and macroprogramming, communication and network protocols, information and signal processing, fundamental theoretical limits and algorithms, prototypes, field experiments, testbeds, novel applications, including urban sensing, security and fault-tolerance. Putting together EWSN 2010 was a team effort. We would like to thank the P- gram Committee members, the reviewers, our sponsors, all authors, and the Organ- ing Committee for their respective contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of two volumes meant to capture, to the extent practical, the scienti?c legacy of the Cassini-Huygens prime mission, a landmark in the history of planetary exploration. As the most ambitious and interdisciplinary planetary exploration mission ?own to date, it has extended our knowledge of the Saturn system to levels of detail at least an order of magnitude beyond that gained from all previous missions to Saturn. Nestled in the brilliant light of the new and deep understanding of the Saturn planetary system is the shiny nugget that is the spectacularly successful collaboration of individuals, - ganizations and governments in the achievement of Cassini-Huygens. In some ways the pa- nershipsformedandlessonslearnedmaybethemost enduringlegacyofCassini-Huygens.The broad, international coalition that is Cassini-Huygens is now conducting the Cassini Equinox Mission and planning the Cassini Solstice Mission, and in a major expansion of those fruitful efforts, has extended the collaboration to the study of new ?agship missions to both Jupiter and Saturn. Such ventures have and will continue to enrich us all, and evoke a very optimistic vision of the future of international collaboration in planetary exploration. The two volumes in the series Saturn from Cassini-Huygens and Titan from Cassini- Huygens are the direct products of the efforts of over 200 authors and co-authors. Though each book has a different set of three editors, the group of six editors for the two volumes has worked together through every step of the process to ensure that these two volumes are a set.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Ninety-two in the Shade: Set in the seedy corners of Key West, the remote shore towns of the Bahamas, and the unforgiving landscape of Big Sky Country, a “uniformly brilliant” collection (The New York Times Book Review) of familial dysfunction, emotional failure, and American loneliness that celebrates the human ability to persist through life's absurdities For more than four decades, Thomas McGuane has been heralded as an unrivaled master of the short story. Now the arc of that achievement appears in one definitive volume—forty-five stories, including two new and six previously uncollected pieces. These are stories of people on the fringes of society, whose twisted pasts meddle with their chances for companionship, moving from the hilarious to the tragic and back again. “A master of the short story... Cloudbursts is clearly the product of a life's worth of thought and feeling and experience; it ought to be savored.” —The New York Times Book Review
