Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative corrections to the decay rate of n = 2 states of hydrogenic ions are calculated. The transitions considered are the M1 decay of the 2s state to the ground state and the E1(M2) decays of the 2p12 and 2p32 states to the ground state. The radiative corrections start in order [alpha](Z[alpha])2, but the method used sums all orders of Z[alpha]. The leading [alpha](Z[alpha])2 correction for the E1 decays is calculated and compared with the exact result. The extension of the calculational method to parity nonconserving transitions in neutral atoms is discussed.

Book excerpt: Relativistic effects are of major importance for understan- ding the properties of heavier atoms and molecules. This book is still the only comprehensive bibliography on related calculations. The material is organized by subject into ta- bles containing a concise characterization. Together with Volume I (Lecture Notes in Chemistry Vol. 41, ISBN 3-540-17167-3) the literature until 1992 is now covered and 6577 references, with titles, are given in the two books. The book will provide aconvenient reference for theoretical chemists and atomic and molecular physicists interested in the properties of heavier elements. Contents: Introduction - One-particle problems - Quantum electrodynamical effects - Multielectron atoms: methods - Multielectron atoms: results - Symmetry - Molecular calcula- tions - Solid-state theory - Relativistic effects and heavy- element chemistry - Corrections to Volume I - Some comments on notations and terminology - List of acronyms and symbols - Bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative Processes in Astrophysics: This clear, straightforward, and fundamental introduction is designed to present-from a physicist's point of view-radiation processes and their applications to astrophysical phenomena and space science. It covers such topics as radiative transfer theory, relativistic covariance and kinematics, bremsstrahlung radiation, synchrotron radiation, Compton scattering, some plasma effects, and radiative transitions in atoms. Discussion begins with first principles, physically motivating and deriving all results rather than merely presenting finished formulae. However, a reasonably good physics background (introductory quantum mechanics, intermediate electromagnetic theory, special relativity, and some statistical mechanics) is required. Much of this prerequisite material is provided by brief reviews, making the book a self-contained reference for workers in the field as well as the ideal text for senior or first-year graduate students of astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics courses. Radiative Processes in Astrophysics also contains about 75 problems, with solutions, illustrating applications of the material and methods for calculating results. This important and integral section emphasizes physical intuition by presenting important results that are used throughout the main text; it is here that most of the practical astrophysical applications become apparent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic hydrogen, the simplest of all stable atoms, has been a challenge to spectroscopists and theoreticians for many years. Here, as in similar systems like positronium, muonium and possibly helium, the accuracy of theoretical predictions is comparable to that of experimental measurements. Hence exciting confrontations are possible. This together with expected large experimental improvements explains the strong interest in the symposium held in Pisa in June-July 1988. The resulting book completely covers the precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen and hydrogen-like systems, and also discusses aspects of QED and the influence of strong fields.

It comprises experiments with electrons and positrons, protons and antiprotons, antimatter and highly charged ions together with corresponding theoretical background. Such investigations represent stringent tests of quantum electrodynamics and the Standard model, antiparticle and antimatter research, test of fundamental symmetries, constants and their possible variations with time and space. They are key to various aspects within metrology such as mass measurements and time standards, as well as promising to further developments in quantum information processing. The reader obtains a valuable source of information suited for beginners and experts with an interest in fundamental studies using particle traps.
