Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Advances in technology, research, and evidence-based practice have led to improvements in the care of patients receiving radiation therapy. The knowledge and expertise required by nurses must focus on the needs of patients who come into their care at any point across the trajectory of the cancer journey. Nurses may work with patients at varying stages of the radiation therapy process and in a wide range of settings. Regardless, however, the need to be knowledgeable about the symptoms and side effects associated with this treatment is essential for nurses caring for this patient population. The Oncology Nursing Society has published the fifth edition of Manual for Radiation Oncology Nursing Practice and Education to support nurses who care for patients who will receive, are receiving, or have received radiation therapy. The fifth edition features significant updates and changes to the content to reflect advances in technology, treatment options, and symptom manage¬ment. New sections have been added based on input from radiation oncology nurses or as a result of changes in treatment options, the needs of specific patient populations, and observations from clinical practice. New topics include patients with cognitive changes and dementia; general distress and coping; patients with mental illness; special populations, such as women who are pregnant, ado-lescents, and young adults; special needs related to late effects of treatment and cardiac toxicities; and treatment modalities, includ¬ing cobalt therapy and immunotherapy. This manual serves as an essential resource for individual nurses new to working in a radiation therapy set¬ting as well as to nurses wanting to advance their knowledge in radiation biology and protection, diverse radiation therapy modalities, combination treatments, site- or disease-specific concerns, symptom management, special populations, and care during transition points. Additionally, this manual can be a resource to advanced practice clinicians, educators, and administrators, with a focus on support for nursing staff seeking the education and skills required to care for patients receiving radiation therapy and their families"--

Book excerpt: This book is the seventh in a series of titles from the National Research Council that addresses the effects of exposure to low dose LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ionizing radiation and human health. Updating information previously presented in the 1990 publication, Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation: BEIR V, this book draws upon new data in both epidemiologic and experimental research. Ionizing radiation arises from both natural and man-made sources and at very high doses can produce damaging effects in human tissue that can be evident within days after exposure. However, it is the low-dose exposures that are the focus of this book. So-called “late” effects, such as cancer, are produced many years after the initial exposure. This book is among the first of its kind to include detailed risk estimates for cancer incidence in addition to cancer mortality. BEIR VII offers a full review of the available biological, biophysical, and epidemiological literature since the last BEIR report on the subject and develops the most up-to-date and comprehensive risk estimates for cancer and other health effects from exposure to low-level ionizing radiation.

Book excerpt: "This report...is designed to serve as a guide for persons (including physicians, nurses, and funeral directors) concerned with the patient who has received a THERAPEUTIC dose of a radionuclide...With the increasing use of radionuclides in therapy, a more comprehensive consideration of the problem, including that of the ambulatory radioactive patient, is desirable. Four situations are of interest: (1) the patient receiving regular nursing care in the hospital; (2) the patient receiving emergency surgery; (3) the patient released from the hospital while still containing an appreciable quantity of the radionuclide; (4) the patient who dies while appreciably radioactive. The present report includes information and recommendations on all of these points for a larger number of radionuclides than were considered in the earlier NCRP report. This report is directed primarily to problems encountered in the general hospital where the therapeutic use of radioactive material is occasional rather than carried out on an intensive scale. For the few large radiation centers more detailed and specialized provisions may be necessary, and can be developed from the principles given here. This report is intended to serve as a guide to good practice. It provides basic standards which may be used in the preparation of regulatory protection codes, but is not specifically written for literal adoption as legal regulations." -- From Preface, page iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an estimated 3.3 billion ionizing radiation imaging examinations performed worldwide each year, the growing use of x-ray-based diagnostic procedures raises concerns about long-term health risks, especially cancer. In addition, rapid growth in the number of nuclear power plants around the world increases the risk of a nuclear accident similar to that of Fukushima, Japan. Add to this, exposure to non-ionizing radiation from prolonged cell phone use, proton radiation from solar flares, and potential nuclear conflict or a dirty bomb attack, and the need to expand our repertoire of radiation prevention and mitigation strategies becomes increasingly urgent. Radiation Injury Prevention and Mitigation in Humans identifies and examines physical protection strategies as well as non-toxic, cost-effective biological protection strategies. This includes agents that—when administered orally before and/or after irradiation exposures—could be effective in preventing and mitigating acute radiation damage. The book discusses implementing physical and biological protection strategies particularly for first responders, radiation workers, astronauts, and civilians who might be exposed to higher doses of radiation in the course of their activities. The book describes: Physics of ionizing radiation and radiological weapons, principles of nuclear reactors, the types of radiological weapons, and consequences of their explosions Acute and late health effects of high and low doses of radiation The efficacy of FDA-approved and unapproved radioprotective and radiation mitigating agents The efficacy of radioprotective and radiation mitigating agents not requiring FDA approval (antioxidants and herbs) Scientific data and rationale in support of using micronutrient preparations containing dietary and endogenous antioxidants for preventing acute radiation sickness and for mitigating the late adverse health effects among survivors of high and low doses of radiation Examining cutting-edge advances in the research of the effects of non-ionizing radiation on cellular and genetic levels, the book proposes an implementation plan of both physical and biological protection strategies. It covers the full range of potential sources of radiation and includes an up-to-date list of helpful resources and references for the latest research and readings on the topic.

Book excerpt: In 1996, NATO issued guidance for the exposure of military personnel to radiation doses different from occupational dose levels, but not high enough to cause acute health effects-and in doing so set policy in a new arena. Scientific and technological developments now permit small groups or individuals to use, or threaten to use, destructive devices (nuclear, biological, chemical, and cyber-based weaponry, among others) targeted anywhere in the world. Political developments, such as the loss of political balance once afforded by competing superpowers, have increased the focus on regional and subregional disputes. What doctrine should guide decisionmaking regarding the potential exposure of troops to radiation in this changed theater of military operations? In 1995, the Office of the U.S. Army Surgeon General asked the Medical Follow-up Agency of the Institute of Medicine to provide advice. This report is the final product of the Committee on Battlefield Radiation Exposure Criteria convened for that purpose. In its 1997 interim report, Evaluation of Radiation Exposure Guidance for Military Operations, the committee addressed the technical aspects of the NATO directive. In this final report, the committee reiterates that discussion and places it in an ethical context.
