After an introduction to the three basic experimental methods (angular correlation, Doppler broadening, and lifetime measurements), the interaction of positrons with lattice defects is reviewed. Results for the annealing of damage after low temperature irradiation are used to show that positron annihilation has provided new information on annealing kinetics. The role of positron techniques in characterizing complex defect structures resulting from high-temperature neutron irradiation is reviewed and the possible utility of positron annihilation as a nondestructive monitor of property changes is pointed out.

Book excerpt: We have made the first measurement of defects in an aged sample of[delta] phase, Ga stabilized Pu, using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. This measurement validates the procedure necessary to perform measurements on this highly toxic material and obtain data representative of sample conditions. Comparison of the positron annihilation lifetime analysis of the data with calculated values suggests that He filled vacancies or vacancy clusters dominate the defect population. Such defects are the necessary precursor to void growth and swelling. The evolution of defects resulting from the radioactive decay of Pu during its life in the stockpile is one of the unknown quantities affecting our confidence in predictions of the limit on stockpile components. Radiation damage leads to changes in the size and strength of metals studied for reactor and accelerator use and similar effects may be expected in Pu. The evolution of radiation produced vacancies into larger void structures and accompanying macroscopic swelling may occur in Pu at some age. A detailed understanding of the defects in self irradiated Pu is required to predict the time scale of void swelling and related radiation effects. 1 fig.

Book excerpt: Positrons provide a non-destructive technique for probing the nature and size of defects in materials with atomic-scale sensitivity. This work will focus on the powerful capabilities of positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) to study the evolution of defects and defect structures. This invaluable tool can aid in developing and characterizing advanced materials, with diverse applications such as nuclear reactors, optoelectronics, nanotechnology, polymers, medical sciences, and more. The work presented in this thesis aims to gain a fundamental understanding of the formation and evolution of defect structures of various metals and alloys under irradiation by applying the techniques and concepts of PAS. Various other characterization techniques are also utilized simultaneously to interpret the positron data better and further enhance our understanding of these materials. Depth-resolved PAS was used to identify vacancy clusters and measure their density as a function of depth in three samples (HfMoTiVZr, HfNbTiZr, and HfNbTaTiZr bulk alloys), performed at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in Dresden, Germany. The samples were studied before and after irradiation from 10 MeV Si ions. The behavior of these alloys under irradiation is discussed and quantified in this work. A single branch of samples from the multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) HfNbTaTiZr (Nb, HfNb, HfNbZr, HfNbTiZr, HfNbTaTiZr) was synthesized into thin films on MgO substrate at the Center of Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), to study the role of chemical complexity in an alloy's response to irradiation. There are four sets of these MPEA-based thin film samples, where one will be kept as a reference, and one will be studied with in situ PAS (iPAS), and two sets will be studied with ex situ PAS. The synthesis of these MPEA-based thin films and the design of the PAS experiment for each set is described in this work, along with other characterization techniques used together with this work. This work was made possible through the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) under grant number DMR-2005064 and by the Fundamental Understanding of Transport Under Reactor Extremes (FUTURE), an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the DOE, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) is a highly effective technique to quantify the lattice deformation in solid materials. The technique is based on amount of time it takes a free neutron to annihilate in the sample material. Since the timescales of positron lifetime are on the order of a nanosecond, high precision timing measurements are required to obtain useful measurements. Recent innovations in digital data acquisition technology has allowed digital systems to approach and surpass the timing capabilities of their analog counterparts. Digital acquisition systems also have the advantage of a generally simpler setup that offers equal capabilities at a lower cost. The digital system can potentially offer double the counting rates, as each detector in the system can measure both starting and stopping events. The spectrometer designed allows for high performance timing measurements, equal and better than analog and more expensive digital systems. Custom software, developed in C++/C, has been written for the data analysis and data acquisition and allows for very high counting rates. The system hardware was assembled with an ORTEC 905-21 fast plastic scintillation detector and a CAEN N6751 2 GS/s digitizer, the timing performance of the specific hardware combination used has been previously undetermined. The timing performance analysis was conducted with using a Co-60 button sized radiation source to measure coincident gamma rays. Since the gamma rays are emitted from the source at almost the exact same moment, the measured time difference between detected events can be used to measure the uncertainty in the timing of the spectrometer. The timing resolution of the spectrometer is characterized by the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of the measured Co-60 spectra. The measured value of the FWHM of the spectrometer was 208.5 ± 1.1 ps.
