Book excerpt: An incredible story of triumph over evil in the modern world. A moving account of what a mother's love for her child can achieve even when the odds are stacked against them both. A horrific first-hand account of a survivor of human trafficking in the 21st-century. A portrayal of the illegal and sordid underworld of trafficking in human organs. Radhika's Story. The nightmare began with a seemingly innocent sip of Coca- Cola, drunk by a starving and desperately thirsty 14-year-old girl. Thus began the first of Radhika Pariyar's human trafficking experiences. Drugged, Radhika woke up hours later, in great pain, only to discover that her kidney had been removed and sold to the highest bidder. A strong young woman, Radhika moved on with her life, marrying and having a much loved child (see photograph, left), but after her marriage failed, Radhika moved from her village in Nepal to give her son a better life but again found herself in the hands of traffickers. Living in India, separated from her son and forced to have sex with up to 25 men a day, Radhika did not accept her lot, however. Desperate to be reunited with her child, Radhika fought against the odds to escape her horrific life, rescue her son and finally find sanctuary in a refuge set up to help survivors of trafficking. Journalist Sharon Hendry tells Radhika's horrifying but incredibly inspiring story. She also highlights the pervasive nature of human trafficking in the 21st century. Proceeds from the book will go to Maiti, the charity that helped Radhika and which continues to help survivors of trafficking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A delightful read [and] an important addition to human-animal relations studies.” —Anthropology Matters What does it mean to live and die in relation to other animals? Animal Intimacies posits this central question alongside the intimate—and intense—moments of care, kinship, violence, politics, indifference, and desire that occur between human and non-human animals. Built on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in the mountain villages of India’s Central Himalayas, Radhika Govindrajan’s book explores the number of ways that human and animal interact to cultivate relationships as interconnected, related beings. Whether it is through the study of the affect and ethics of ritual animal sacrifice, analysis of the right-wing political project of cow-protection, or examination of villagers’ talk about bears who abduct women and have sex with them, Govindrajan illustrates that multispecies relatedness relies on both difference and ineffable affinity between animals. Animal Intimacies breaks substantial new ground in animal studies, and Govindrajan’s detailed portrait of the social, political and religious life of the region will be of interest to cultural anthropologists and scholars of South Asia as well. “Immerses us in passionate case studies on the multiple relationships between Kumaoni villagers and animals in Uttarakhand.” —European Bulletin of Himalayan Research “A memorable and innovative ethnography.” —Piers Locke, University of Canterbury

Once again Alex Duggins and her veterinarian friend Tony Harrison are thrown into a major murder investigation. An almost fresh body is discovered in a disused well among the ruins of a 14th-century manor house ... the motive for the killing a baffling mystery. The victim was a widow who had lived quietly in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Folly-on-Weir for the past ten years. Who on earth could want her dead, and by such brutal means? As rumour and speculation engulf the town, another woman is attacked – and Alex discovers that behind a tranquil face lurks a cunning and vengeful mind. Despite warnings from the police to stop interfering, she finds herself in the sights of a ruthless killer who has decided she knows too much ... The Alex Duggins series will appeal to fans of Louise Penny and Elizabeth George.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the activities and political personas of women activists in Shiv Sena, a militant Indian political party. Rich in detail, this book tells the stories of women of Shiv Sena (Shivaji’s Army), a militant political party in Western India. It provides insight into the political networks powered by lower-level women politicians in postcolonial, globalizing cities and on their margins. Based on more than ten years of in-depth ethnographic fieldwork with the women of Shiv Sena, the work shows how women political activists in urbanizing India conjure political authority through the inventive, dangerous, and transgressive political personas known as “dashing ladies.” Tarini Bedi develops a feminist theory of brokerage politics, arguing that political grids where women employ political, symbolic, and material resources through the political system may be seen as channels of what can be termed “political matronage.”

Book excerpt: I was never meant to be a writer, but I had the desire to narrate a few incidents and that got the writer inside me working. Before you start reading this story, I would like to mention that, this story is inspired by true events and the fictional changes that have been made are to protect the identity of the people involved. However, it has no relation whatsoever to anyone bearing the same name or names. Becoming a writer from a person belonging to a core technical background wasnt that easy. However, there are stories that force you to pick up a pen so that people can learn a lesson even without living the same in their own lives. All of us do something of our choice but not everyone is aware of the fact that commitment to see something through to completion is the essence of the efforts of a lot of people. There are so many people who are responsible in ways big and small, for this book being a reality today. I couldnt have done it without the support I received from all those people who always played an important role in my life and I know they will always be there. To each one of you, I pay my humble and most heartfelt thanks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Population Geographies provides a foundation to the incredibly diverse, topical and interesting field of twenty-first-century population geography. It establishes the substantive concerns of the subdiscipline, acknowledges the sheer diversity of its approaches, key concepts and theories and engages with the resulting major areas of academic debate that stem from this richness. Written in an accessible style and assuming little prior knowledge of topics covered, yet drawing on a wide range of diverse academic literature, the book’s particular originality comes from its extended definition of population geography that locates it firmly within the multiple geographies of the life course. Consequently, issues such as childhood and adulthood, family dynamics, ageing, everyday mobilities, morbidity and differential ability assume a prominent place alongside the classic population geography triumvirate of births, migrations and deaths. This broader framing of the field allows the book to address more holistically aspects of lives across space often provided little attention in current textbooks. Particular note is given to how these lives are shaped though hybrid social, biological and individual arenas of differential life course experience. By engaging with traditional quantitative perspectives and newer qualitative insights, the authors engage students from the quantitative macro scale of population to the micro individual scale. Aimed at higher-level undergraduate and graduate students, this introductory text provides a well-developed pedagogy, including case studies that illustrate theory, concepts and issues.
