Book excerpt: This book text provides an overview of the radar target recognition process and covers the key techniques being developed for operational systems. It is based on the fundamental scientific principles of high resolution radar, and explains how the underlying techniques can be used in real systems, taking into account the characteristics of practical radar system designs and component limitations. It also addresses operational aspects, such as how high resolution modes would fit in with other functions such as detection and tracking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of identifying radar targets without predetermined knowledge or measurements of their aspect angle is examined. The proposed solution is to use radar magnitude and phase versus frequency data in the resonance region as input data for pattern recognition techniques. Practical methods are developed for measuring radar phase and dealing with polarization effects. Pattern recognition algorithms that optimize separation between pairs of input data are developed. These algorithms are based on digital spatial frequency filtering of curves of the radar return versus the radar frequency. The technique is simulated on a digital computer for three objects - a cylinder, a cone, and a step cylinder - all of about the same size. Results show that at most aspect angles, satisfactory recognition is attained at moderate signal-to-noise ratios.

Book excerpt: Radar Target Detection: Handbook of Theory and Practice covers a set of graphical solutions to the detection problem, designated as Meyer Plots, for radar systems design. A radar system's major purpose is the detection and location of an object by means of a return signal, which could be either a reflection or a beacon. This book is composed of four chapters. Chapter 1 presents the basic radar range equation, which is the basic relationship which permits the calculation of echo signal strength from measurable or known parameters of the radar transmitter, antenna, propagation path, and target. Chapter 2 provides examples for determining statistical signal detection using Meyer Plots, particularly for determining detection probability and integration loss and efficiency. Chapter 3 describes the application of target models to determination of detection probability. Chapter 4 examines how Meyer Plots can be used to solve problems involving most any target model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An automatic target identification technique has been developed based on low frequency radar returns. The technique has been shown to be effective for a large variety of targets from simple shapes such as spheres and cubes to complex targets such as airplanes. The technique utilizes the radar returns at specific frequencies as a feature set. Reliable classification has been shown in the presence of considerable amounts of noise. The radar data used to demonstrate the above results have been obtained either experimentally or computationally. An imaging technique has also been developed which produced a synthetic image of the target from low frequency radar returns. The image, displayed on a CRT, is particularly useful for identifying unexpected targets such as may occur in space applications. (Author).

Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop algorithms that recognize targets by exploiting properties in the late-time resonance induced by ultra- wide band radar signals. A new variant of the Matrix Pencil Method algorithm is developed that identifies complex resonant frequencies present in the scattered signal. Kalman filters are developed to represent the dynamics of the signals scattered from several target types. The Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation algorithm uses the Kalman filters to recognize targets. The target recognition algorithm is shown to be successful in the presence of noise. The performance of the new algorithms is compared to that of previously published algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report extends and formalizes the concept of using the complex natural resonances of objects as a tool in radar target discrimination. The complex natural resonances which characterize an object are found to be excitation invariant; i.e., the positions of the resonances in the complex frequency plane do not shift as the object is viewed along different incident directions or with different polarizations, which permit a minimum amount of data to be used in object discrimination. Once the dominant (low frequency or long time) natural resonances have been obtained for those objects of interest, a predictor-correlator type of processing can be applied to multi-frequency radar scattering data from an unknown target. It can be established from which of the known objects the scattering most likely originated. This done on the basis of correlations among the scattering and the various sets of natural resonances; the set of natural resonances showing the highest correlation identifies the most probable target.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A target identification technique is presented. It is based on low frequency radar returns. A large variety of objects is shown to be reliably classified in the presence of substantial amounts of noise. The target complexity varies form cylinders and cubes to modern combat airplanes. Two classification algorithms are used and compared, a linear discriminant method and a nearest neighbor rule. Both multiclass and pairwise classifications are carried out and extensively illustrated. The majority of results presented involve only the amplitudes of the radar returns, but the last part of the report describes the very impressive effects of phase on classification performance. An object detection system that transmits electromagnetic waves and analyses the echoes coming from the objects. Radar can operate in any weather conditions (e.g. darkness, fog, rain). Radar can perform its function at short and long ranges. Radar can provide measurements in high accuracy. Radar signal processing can be defined as the manipulation of the received signal, represented in digital format, to extract the desired information whilst rejecting unwanted signals. In particular, a surveillance radar takes a decision about the presence or absence of targets whilst cancelling radar echoes caused by ground clutter, radio frequency interference and noise source.

Book excerpt: The report investigates the performance of several types of multi-frequency radar systems employing a data base of measured monostatic radar signatures as descriptors for Radar Target Identification (RTI). The approach, a Monte-Carlo computer simulation, enables the evaluation of radar systems exploiting various aspects of RTI techniques. These aspects, examined by misclassification percentage curves, are: the number of interrogation frequencies, operating bandwidths, classification algorithm types, larger target aspect zones, and target descriptors called feature vectors? The data base of radar signatures was obtained at The Ohio State University ElectroScience Laboratory Compact Range facility, and consisted of scale model monostatic calibrated radar measurements from five commercial aircraft. It is shown that the fully-coherent radar feature vectors HH, VV, RR, LL, and RL perform very effectively for target identification with signal to noise ratios of O dB. It is also shown that the low-frequency sector of the data base provides good classification performance versus noise power, and that the number of frequencies within a given bandwidth is optimized by Shannon's sampling theorem.
