Book excerpt: The 17th century dramatist Jean Racine was considered, along with Moliere and Corneille, as one of the three great playwrights of his era. The quality of Racine's poetry has been described as possibly his most important contribution to French literature and his use of the alexandrine poetic line is one of the best examples of such use noted for its harmony, simplicity and elegance. While critics over the centuries have debated the worth of Jean Racine, at present, he is widely considered a literary genius of revolutionary proportions. In this volume of Racine's plays we find "Iphigenia," the ninth of twelve plays by the author. After a series of historical dramas Racine choose to return to mythological subject matter for his ninth play. As Agamemnon, King of the Greeks, prepares his navy to attack Troy, the gods quell the winds for their journey and demand the sacrifice of Iphigenia, Agamemnon's daughter. Based in part on Euripides' "Iphigenia in Aulis," Racine departs somewhat by substituting an alternative dramatic solution for the ending.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume of a projected translation into English of all twelve of Jean Racine&’s plays&—only the third time such a project has been undertaken. For this new translation, Geoffrey Alan Argent has rendered these plays in the verse form that Racine might well have used had he been English: namely, the &“heroic&” couplet. Argent has exploited the couplet&’s compressed power and flexibility to produce a work of English literature, a verse drama as gripping in English as Racine&’s is in French. Complementing the translation are the illuminating Discussion, intended as much to provoke discussion as to provide it, and the extensive Notes and Commentary, which offer their own fresh and thought-provoking insights. In Iphigenia, his ninth play, Racine returns to Greek myth for the first time since Andromache. To Euripides&’s version of the tale he adds a love interest between Iphigenia and Achilles. And dissatisfied with the earlier resolutions of the Iphigenia myth (her actual death or her eleventh-hour rescue by a dea ex machina), Racine creates a wholly original character, Eriphyle, who, in addition to providing an intriguing new denouement, serves the dual dramatic purpose of triangulating the love interest and galvanizing the wholesome &“family values&” of this play by a jolt of supercharged passion.

Book excerpt: This first biography of Racine in over half a century for an English-language readership also traces the impact of Racine over three centuries in England as well as France. The plays and their reception are reviewed, using contextual approaches as part of each phase of Racine's life-story, with excerpts and quotations translated. Racine's upbringing and work as poet and historiographer are related to the France of Louis XIV, to audiences and to advancement for this 'man from nowhere', with parallels in Britain and elsewhere. Changing attitudes to Racine are traced across the centuries, across literary movements and on stage, including recent productions. The book provides insights in the specialist field of Racine studies and seventeenth-century French literature and theatre, in comparative literary studies, particularly between France and Restoration England, and to the interaction of Racine and European cultural movements to the present day.

In this volume of Racine's plays we find "Iphigenia, Phaedra, Athaliah," three of the most popular of the author's dramas. In "Iphigenia" we find the titular daughter of Agamemnon, King of the Greeks, who must sacrifice his daughter in order to set sail for war. In "Phaedra," we have the classic story from Greek mythology concerning its titular character who though married to Theseus falls in love with Hippolytus. And finally in "Athaliah" we find the biblical story of Athaliah, widow of the king of Judah, who rules the country as Queen regnant.

Book excerpt: Racine the practising dramatist had been in some danger of being crowded out from the numerous books on his psychology and style. In this critical study of the man and his work, first published in 1951 and this slightly revised edition originally in 1973, Dr Brereton’s guiding principle has been to make the factual basis as accurate as it can be in the light of modern research. The result is the portrait of a sensitive and attractive figure which is none the worse for being shorn of certain legends.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racine: Iphigenie In presenting this volume for use in the higher institutions of learning in America, an attempt has been made to offer the best of everything that is to be said in connection with one of Racine's leading tragedies. A comprehensive bibliography sets forth the names of those who have discoursed on the classic French Iphigenie in the history of literary and dramatic criticism, while a separate list enumerates the modern annotated editions of this tragedy intended for use by students in France, Germany, and England. The text itself has been stamped already ne varietur in the excellent edition made by Paul Mesnard for the series of Les Grands Ecrivains de la France, and yet it has been considered advisable to deviate therefrom in certain particulars. In detail the punctuation of v. 369 has been altered. In accordance with modern usage, the endings of the imperfect indicative and of the conditional, -ais, -ait, -aient, are substituted throughout for the older -ois, -oit, -oient. Likewise ai is written for oi in faible, faiblesse, and in verbs in -aitre. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
