Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet presents findings of the fifth survey conducted by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), which tracked the representation of women and racial minorities in school administration. Data were derived from a survey mailed to chief state school officers across the United States. Responses were received from 49 states and Washington, D.C. Findings indicate that women and racial minorities made slight gains in the superintendency since 1990. However, this increase was the least upward movement when compared with other administrative positions. Women and racial minorities also made modest gains in the assistant superintendency. The highest gains were made in the principalship. Overall, the increases in the representation of women were greater than the increases in the representation of racial minorities in school administration. Finally, representation of racial minorities was highest in those geographic regions where the racial groups are predominant in the population. Six charts, 10 tables, and a list of reporting states are included. (LMI)

Book excerpt: In K-12 education, minority women leaders must navigate a complex maze of challenges that deeply impact their personal and professional lives. The journey of these leaders is marked by a series of starts and stops, demanding an extraordinary degree of resilience, mentorship, and leadership coaching. Despite the theoretical backing and organizational intent, the stark reality is that educational leadership roles for minority women often lack the necessary preparation and concerted efforts essential to supporting their unique needs. The resulting shortfall hampers their ability to sustain success over time. Minority Women in K-12 Education Leadership sheds light on the intersection of gender and ethnicity within educational leadership and addresses the various aspects of minority women's experiences. The objective of Minority Women in K-12 Education Leadership is clear—to provide readers, educational allies, educators, administrators, and stakeholders with a profound understanding of the intersections of gender, leadership, and ethnicity/color in educational leadership. This book goes beyond identifying challenges; it celebrates the resilience of minority women leaders, explores the support systems they rely on, and offers practical strategies for success. The content delves into the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of their experiences, aiming to bridge theoretical and practical concepts and provide valuable insights for practitioners, scholars, and stakeholders.

Book excerpt: This important volume explores how racism operates in schools and society, while also unpacking larger patterns of racist ideology and white privilege as it manifests across various levels of schooling. A diverse set of contributors analyze particular contexts of white privilege, providing key research findings, connections to policy, and exemplars of schools and universities that are overcoming these challenges. Whiteucation provides a multi-level and holistic perspective on how inequitable power dynamics and prejudice exist in schools, ultimately encouraging reflection, dialogue, and inquiry in spaces where white privilege needs to be questioned, interrogated, and dismantled.

Book excerpt: This volume examines the educational leadership of Black women in the U.S. as informed by their raced and gendered positionalities, experiences, perspectives, and most importantly, the intersection of these doubly marginalized identities in school and community contexts. While there are bodies of research literature on women in educational leadership, as well as the leadership development, philosophies, and approaches of Black or African American educational leaders, this issue interrogates the ways in which the Black woman’s socially constructed intersectional identity informs her leadership values, approach, and impact. As an act of self-invention, the volume simultaneously showcases the research and voices of Black women scholars – perspectives traditionally silenced in the leadership discourse generally, and educational leadership discourse specifically. Whether the empirical or conceptual focus is a Black female school principal, African American female superintendent, Black feminist of the early twentieth century, or Black woman education researcher, the framing and analysis of each article interrogates how the unique location of the Black woman, at the intersection of race and gender, shapes and influences their lived personal and/or professional experiences as educational leaders. This collection will be of interest to education leadership researchers, faculty, and students, practicing school and district administrators, and readers interested in education leadership studies, leadership theory, Black feminist thought, intersectionality, and African American leadership. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education.

Book excerpt: Activities aimed at addressing the need for recruiting women and minorities in school administration are presented in this resource manual, which is a collective work of the Study Group on Women and Minorities sponsored by the National LEADership Network. Each section describes an interactive, adaptable activity that is aimed at policymakers and administrative staffs. The first activity focuses on how to obtain, use, and disseminate information to create a state demographic profile. The second activity aims to share information about several current recruitment programs and to help Leadership in Educational Administration Development (LEAD) directors plan for expanding recruitment efforts. Providing entry-level support is the purpose of the third activity, which is designed to create awareness and encourage the development of entry-level programs for women and minorities. The fourth activity examines the promotion of advancement opportunities for women and minorities: identifying barriers to advancement and determining strategies to overcome them, and valuing diversity in leadership styles. Activity 5 helps administrators create an action plan. Forty-three figures can be made into transparencies, and a list of resources accompanies each section. Appendices contain an article on access to the roles of school leadership, resolutions adopted by the National School Boards Association (NSBA) and American Association of School Administrators (AASA), LEAD Center directors/trainers resources, and training activity notes. (Contains 44 references.) (LMI)
