Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racial Adjustments in the Methodist Episcopal Church It is claimed that the residential episcopacy is a step in the right direction and needs only the election of a colored General Superintendent, who will cooperate with our bishops residing in Southern territory in order to prove to the world that Methodism is able to measure up to the New Testament's standard of our holy re ligion, and to aid in bringing in the day when the whole world shall blend most harmoniously into one eternal brotherhood. Book excerpt: "The Colored Man in the Methodist Episcopal Church" by Lewis Marshall Hagood was originally published in 1890 and was, at the time, an important piece of non-fiction regarding the large number of African-Americans who converted to Methodism. This book recounts the religious history and connection between the African-American population and the Methodist church spanning from the time of the earliest slaves in the United States of America all the way to the post-Civil War era of American history. Though this book was almost a forgotten piece of history, it's once again available for the public to read to learn about this important part of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After slavery was abolished, how far would white America go toward including African Americans as full participants in the country's institutions? Conventional historical timelines mark the end of Reconstruction in the year 1877, but the Methodist Episcopal Church continued to wrestle with issues of racial inclusion for decades after political support for racial reform had receded. An 1844 schism over slavery split Methodism into northern and southern branches, but Union victory in the Civil War provided the northern Methodists with the opportunity to send missionaries and teachers into the territory that had been occupied by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. To a remarkable degree, the M.E. Church succeeded in appealing to freed slaves and white Unionists and thereby built up a biracial membership far surpassing that of any other Protestant denomination. A Long Reconstruction details the denomination's journey with unification and justice. African Americans who joined did so in a spirit of hope that through religious fellowship and cooperation they could gain respect and acceptance and ultimately assume a position of equality and brotherhood with whites. However, as segregation gradually took hold in the South, many northern Methodists evinced the same skepticism as white southerners about the fitness of African Americans for positions of authority and responsibility in an interracial setting. The African American membership was never without strong white allies who helped to sustain the Church's official stance against racial caste but, like the nation as a whole, the M.E. Church placed a growing priority on putting their broken union back together.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Antislavery Struggle and Triumph in the Methodist Episcopal Church The subject of slavery has ceased to be an excit ing question. A general agreement has succeeded the former dissensions attendant upon its discussion, only a few years ago, in both civil and ecclesiastical bodies. And this is so, because in America slavery has ceased to be a fact. It is now only a memory, kept painfully vivid with its victims by the spirit of caste which remains in both Church and State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to the Methodist Episcopal Church The anti-slavery discussion forms a new era in the history of the M. E. Church. The principal facts and arguments connected with this discussion, should have a more permanent existence than that of newspaper articles; and I, doubt not, the time will come, when a repository containing such matters will be highly valued. The Wesleyan anti-slavery Review will be published again in 1839 and 1840, unless some unforeseen circumstance should prevent it. The present number contains matter enough to fill a common sized octavo volume of from 300 to 400 pages. The publication of this work was not deter mined upon till a short time before it was commenced. Should it be continued, more attention will be paid to future numbers. The next number will contain more matter of general interest, though it will be suited to the discussion in the M. E. Church. The history of this discussion will be continued in future num bers, and new and important topics will be introduced. Two numbers more will make a volume of about 450 pages, which will con tain more matter than two common sized octavo volumes of 500 pages each. Such a volume will be of consequence hereafter. Those who wish for the work complete, will do well to preserve this, as they may not be able to obtain it hereafter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church Some might expect, in such a work, a discussion of the reasons for certain rules, and the interpretation to be put upon them. There can be no doubt that a know ledge of both these will be promoted by the informa tion which is here communicated, as to the time when, and the connection in which the rules were introduced, and the changes they have undergone. But to set forth his own Opinion on points of discipline was no part of the author's plan; nor would it have become either his age in the ministry, or his station in the Church. His object will be accomplished, if he shall promote, in any degree, an understanding of the Discipline of the Church, and an attachment to those great principles of its-economy, which, amid all the changes of form, have remained the same from the beginning, and which have proved so signally successful in spreading Scrip tural holiness over these lands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Revisions of the Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church The labor in the preparation of this work has been very great, as will be perceived by the immense amount of detail of which it is made up. The method of preparation is much more difficult than that employed by Emory. Extracts had to be made from the original sources in the same way, and then, the more difficult work to be performed of recasting the whole in minute and often perplexing detail. But, however diffi cult the use of the lan to the author, it IS confidently believed it will be found more simp e and valuable to the student than the former one. That a work, beset with so many difficulties, should prove to be per feet, is too much to hope. The author only claims to have used due diligence, and indulges the hope that serious errors have been avoided. If any shall be found he would gladly be informed of them, that they ma be corrected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from That They May Be One" In Behalf of the Organic Union of American Methodism The hour has passed when the branches of the Methodist family in America (if they really desire organic union) will confine themselves to expressions of fraternal feeling merely or a desire for unification. The history of the present quadrennium makes such a display, if the deliverance confines itself to that, quite belated if not tiresome, because there is now before the Methodism of this country a concrete plan for achieving organic union between at least two of its branches, and those, in numbers, property, and influence, preeminent. Discussion may, indeed, take the form of an argument for organic union and an appeal for its consummation, but all that goes only part way in what is demanded from henceforth of such as take in hand any real or satisfying contribution to the subject.
