This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The productivity slowdown of the 1970s and 1980s and the resumption of productivity growth in the 1990s have provoked controversy among policymakers and researchers. Economists have been forced to reexamine fundamental questions of measurement technique. Some researchers argue that econometric approaches to productivity measurement usefully address shortcomings of the dominant index number techniques while others maintain that current productivity statistics underreport damage to the environment. In this book, the contributors propose innovative approaches to these issues. The result is a state-of-the-art exposition of contemporary productivity analysis. Charles R. Hulten is professor of economics at the University of Maryland. He has been a senior research associate at the Urban Institute and is chair of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Michael Harper is chief of the Division of Productivity Research at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Edwin R. Dean, formerly associate commissioner for Productivity and Technology at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is adjunct professor of economics at The George Washington University.
Book Synopsis The Changing Industry and Skill Mix of Canada's International Trade by : D. Peter Dungan
Download or read book The Changing Industry and Skill Mix of Canada's International Trade written by D. Peter Dungan and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses Input-Output analysis to examine the industry and skill mix of Canadian exports and imports as they stood in 1997 and how this mix has changed over the past three decades. Section 2 of the report describes the data and calculation methods used. Section 3 contains a literature review. Section 4 examines how the place of exports has changed in the Canadian economy since 1961, and how the industrial output and employment mix of exports has altered over that time. Changes in the employment mix are decomposed into four main sub-components. Then, adding industry skill-mix data, it discusses the education/skill mix of Canadian exports in recent years and determines what changes may have occurred in this mix over time. Section 5 repeats the analysis in Section 4, but for imports. Section 6 reports the conclusions and main findings. Several appendices present details of the calculations, sensitivity tests and more detailed industrial results.
Book Synopsis Doing Business in the Knowledge-Based Economy by : Louis A. Lefebvre
Download or read book Doing Business in the Knowledge-Based Economy written by Louis A. Lefebvre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 17 and 18, 1998, a conference took place at Mont Tremblant on the theme "Doing Business in a Knowledge-Based Economy." This conference brought together some hundred participants from government, business and academia, with backgrounds in business administration, engineering, public administration and economics, to provide a multidisciplinary analysis of what has come to be known as the "Knowledge-Based Economy" (KBE). The aim was to come up with suggestions and recommendations about how to do business in a knowledge based economy, both at the firm level and at the government level. All presenters were explicitly asked to conclude with policy recommendations. The conference was sponsored by Industry Canada and organized by the Centre of Interuniversity Research on the Analysis of Organizations (CIRANO). The conference papers offered U.S., Canadian and European perspectives on the management of a knowledge-based economy. This volume is divided into three parts. The papers in part I set the stage by describing the salient features of the KBE. What is so special about it? What are its economic underpinnings? What are its technological characteristics? Knowledge plays a crucial role in a KBE, hence its name. Whereas, in the past, growth was determined primarily by the availability of land, natural resources, labour and capital successively, at the end of the twentieth century, knowledge has become a (if not the) major factor of economic growth.

Book excerpt: Measuring Economic Growth and Productivity: Foundations, KLEMS Production Models, and Extensions presents new insights into the causes, mechanisms and results of growth in national and regional accounts.
