Book Synopsis The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by : Mark Haddon
Download or read book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time written by Mark Haddon and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling modern classic—both poignant and funny—narrated by a fifteen year old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer, and turns to his favourite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the workings of Christopher’s mind. And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotions. The effect is dazzling, making for one of the freshest debut in years: a comedy, a tearjerker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.

Living in the wealthy Sydney suburbs, it's a community where everyone knows each other - and secrets don't stay secret for long. The big date in the calendar is the school's annual fundraising trivia night, but when the evening gets raucously out of hand, talk turns to partner-swapping. Book Synopsis A Summer in Antarctica by : J.J. Jones
Download or read book A Summer in Antarctica written by J.J. Jones and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing in this book refers to a construction project that I was lucky enough to have being chosen to take part in on behalf of the British Antarctic Survey. The Project took place at Rothera Station, Adelaide Island, Antarctica, in the summer season of 1994/95. The project was to continue with the on-going regeneration of the accommodation and working structures at Rothera Station. The experience of working on the Antarctic continent was truly amazing and having being well travelled with my previous employments, nothing compared to the sights that I witnessed from leaving the Falkland Islands until we reached Adelaide Island at 67 degrees South, 68 degrees West in late November 1994. Today, I am based in Birmingham, England and I spend my time working and travelling between the United Kingdom and Turkey. I wrote this book through a diary of events relating to a construction contract that I was involved in on the continent of Antarctica.

Book Synopsis A Book for Her by : Bridget Christie
Download or read book A Book for Her written by Bridget Christie and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridget Christie is a stand-up comedian, idiot and feminist. On the 30th of April 2012, a man farted in the Women’s Studies Section of a bookshop and it changed her life forever. A Book For Her details Christie’s twelve years of anonymous toil in the bowels of stand-up comedy and the sudden epiphany that made her, unbelievably, one of the most critically acclaimed British stand-up comedians this decade, drawing together the threads that link a smelly smell in the women’s studies section to the global feminist struggle. Find out how nice Peter Stringfellow’s fish tastes, how yoghurt advertising perpetuates rape myths, and how Emily Bronte used a special ladies’ pen to write Wuthering Heights. If you’re interested in comedy and feminism, then this is definitely the book for you. If you hate both then I’d probably give it a miss. “Christie is adept at turning on a sixpence between being comical, or serious, or both at once, and at pricking her own earnestness.” Telegraph ‘Christie piles derision and tomfoolery upon everyday sexism, while never pretending that jokes alone will solve the problem.’ Guardian
