Book Synopsis Quilts: Central Extensions, Braid Actions, and Finite Groups by : Tim Hsu
Download or read book Quilts: Central Extensions, Braid Actions, and Finite Groups written by Tim Hsu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quilts are 2-complexes used to analyze actions and subgroups of the 3-string braid group and similar groups. This monograph establishes the fundamentals of quilts and discusses connections with central extensions, braid actions, and finite groups. Most results have not previously appeared in a widely available form, and many results appear in print for the first time. This monograph is accessible to graduate students, as a substantial amount of background material is included. The methods and results may be relevant to researchers interested in infinite groups, moonshine, central extensions, triangle groups, dessins d'enfants, and monodromy actions of braid groups.
Book Synopsis Characters and Cyclotomic Fields in Finite Geometry by : Bernhard Schmidt
Download or read book Characters and Cyclotomic Fields in Finite Geometry written by Bernhard Schmidt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contributes to the existence theory of difference sets, cyclic irreducible codes and similar objects. The new method of field descent for cyclotomic integers of presribed absolute value is developed. Applications include the first substantial progress towards the Circulant Hadamard Matrix Conjecture and Ryser`s conjecture since decades. It is shown that there is no Barker sequence of length l with 13
Book Synopsis hp-Finite Element Methods for Singular Perturbations by : Jens M. Melenk
Download or read book hp-Finite Element Methods for Singular Perturbations written by Jens M. Melenk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many partial differential equations arising in practice are parameter-dependent problems that are of singularly perturbed type. Prominent examples include plate and shell models for small thickness in solid mechanics, convection-diffusion problems in fluid mechanics, and equations arising in semi-conductor device modelling. Common features of these problems are layers and, in the case of non-smooth geometries, corner singularities. Mesh design principles for the efficient approximation of both features by the hp-version of the finite element method (hp-FEM) are proposed in this volume. For a class of singularly perturbed problems on polygonal domains, robust exponential convergence of the hp-FEM based on these mesh design principles is established rigorously.
Book Synopsis Punctured Torus Groups and 2-Bridge Knot Groups (I) by : Hirotaka Akiyoshi
Download or read book Punctured Torus Groups and 2-Bridge Knot Groups (I) written by Hirotaka Akiyoshi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-26 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first part of a work that provides a full account of Jorgensen's theory of punctured torus Kleinian groups and its generalization. It offers an elementary and self-contained description of Jorgensen's theory with a complete proof. Through various informative illustrations, readers are naturally led to an intuitive, synthetic grasp of the theory, which clarifies how a very simple fuchsian group evolves into complicated Kleinian groups.
Book Synopsis Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf Algebras over Groups of Prime Order by : Yorck Sommerhäuser
Download or read book Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf Algebras over Groups of Prime Order written by Yorck Sommerhäuser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-20 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the first monograph devoted to this subject, the book addresses the classification problem for semisimple Hopf algebras, a field that has attracted considerable attention in the last years. The special approach to this problem taken here is via semidirect product decompositions into Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras and group rings of cyclic groups of prime order. One of the main features of the book is a complete treatment of the structure theory for such Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras.
Book Synopsis Lectures on the Automorphism Groups of Kobayashi-Hyperbolic Manifolds by : Alexander Isaev
Download or read book Lectures on the Automorphism Groups of Kobayashi-Hyperbolic Manifolds written by Alexander Isaev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-03-11 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph the author presents a coherent exposition of recent results on complete characterization of Kobayashi-hyperbolic manifolds with high-dimensional groups of holomorphic automorphisms. These classification results can be viewed as complex-geometric analogues of those known for Riemannian manifolds with high-dimensional isotropy groups that were extensively studied in the 1950s-70s.

Book Synopsis A Concise Course on Stochastic Partial Differential Equations by : Claudia Prévôt
Download or read book A Concise Course on Stochastic Partial Differential Equations written by Claudia Prévôt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-26 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures concentrate on (nonlinear) stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) of evolutionary type. There are three approaches to analyze SPDE: the "martingale measure approach", the "mild solution approach" and the "variational approach". The purpose of these notes is to give a concise and as self-contained as possible an introduction to the "variational approach". A large part of necessary background material is included in appendices.
Book Synopsis Attractivity and Bifurcation for Nonautonomous Dynamical Systems by : Martin Rasmussen
Download or read book Attractivity and Bifurcation for Nonautonomous Dynamical Systems written by Martin Rasmussen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although, bifurcation theory of equations with autonomous and periodic time dependence is a major object of research in the study of dynamical systems since decades, the notion of a nonautonomous bifurcation is not yet established. In this book, two different approaches are developed which are based on special definitions of local attractivity and repulsivity. It is shown that these notions lead to nonautonomous Morse decompositions.
Book Synopsis Iterative Approximation of Fixed Points by : Vasile Berinde
Download or read book Iterative Approximation of Fixed Points written by Vasile Berinde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-04-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph gives an introductory treatment of the most important iterative methods for constructing fixed points of nonlinear contractive type mappings. For each iterative method considered, it summarizes the most significant contributions in the area by presenting some of the most relevant convergence theorems. It also presents applications to the solution of nonlinear operator equations as well as the appropriate error analysis of the main iterative methods.

Book Synopsis Laplacian Eigenvectors of Graphs by : Türker Biyikoglu
Download or read book Laplacian Eigenvectors of Graphs written by Türker Biyikoglu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-07-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating volume investigates the structure of eigenvectors and looks at the number of their sign graphs ("nodal domains"), Perron components, and graphs with extremal properties with respect to eigenvectors. The Rayleigh quotient and rearrangement of graphs form the main methodology. Eigenvectors of graph Laplacians may seem a surprising topic for a book, but the authors show that there are subtle differences between the properties of solutions of Schrödinger equations on manifolds on the one hand, and their discrete analogs on graphs.
