Book excerpt: There is one inlet of power in the life-anybody's life-any kind of power: just one inlet-the Holy Spirit. He is power. He is in every one who opens his door to God. He eagerly enters every open door. He comes in by our invitation and consent. His presence within is the vital thing. But with many of us while He is in, He is not in control: in as guest; not as host. That is to say He is hindered in His natural movements; tied up, so that He cannot do what He would. And so we are not conscious or only partially conscious of His presence. And others are still less so. But to yield to His mastery, to cultivate His friendship, to give Him full swing-that will result in what is called power. One inlet of power-the Holy Spirit in control. In this must-read Christian Classic, S. D. Gordon explores the power of a life filled with prayer.*This edition corrects errors that were found in the table of contents in a previous edition.

I have tried to find out for myself what the old Book of God tells about Him. And here I am trying to tell to others, as simply as I can, what I found. It was by the tedious, twisting path of doubt that I climbed the hill of truth up to some of its summits of certainty. I am free to confess that I am ignorant of the subject treated here save for the statements of that Book, and for the assent within my own spirit to these statements, which has greatly deepened the impression they made, and make. There is no question raised here about that Book itself, but simply a taking and grouping up together of what it says.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks About the Crowned Christ Crowning the Christ is an intensely practical thing, whether taken in the personal sense or the world sense. He has been crowned in the upper world. With wondrous patience and graciousness He pleads for the personal crowning in our lives. Some day - no one knows just when - He will begin to act as the crowned Christ in all the affairs of our earth. The initiative of all action to-day on the earth is in man's hands. Some day the initiative of governing action on the earth will be in the hands of the crowned Christ, even while the personal initiative of each man's life will still be in his own hands. God is intensely practical. Jesus was never concerned about speculation nor mere discussion; He was too intent on helping people. The Bible is wholly a practical book. It is concerned only with helping us. It does not tell us all the truth there is; we shall be constantly learning more in the future life. But it does tell us all we need to know now. And its purpose in telling us what it does is wholly practical, - to urge us to right choice, and to lives that square with the choice. This is the purpose that decided just what truth should be told in the Book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks About Jesus We have had no end of discussion over the questions, Who are Christians? and What is Christianity? And, so long as the present indefinite methods are followed, there is no apparent reason why there ever should be any end. No first principles or fixed starting-point being held in common, each one chooses his own premises, according to the law of affinity, and then sails easily on to the conclusion he prefers. While very satisfactory to one party, it naturally has little effect on the other. Beecher said, some years ago, that most people go through the Bible like a magnet through a dish of sand containing iron filings, and "come out of it with the texts they like sticking all over them." No better illustration of this can be found than the current discussion about Christianity. Let us see if there is not a method, or a few principles, that all intelligent and honest persons must accord as guides. To the Catholic, the ultimate authority is the Church. The Church's word is as divine as any recorded utterance of Jesus himself. And, in any case, it is the Church that must decide what Jesus meant, what the Apostles meant, and what the Fathers meant. To a Catholic, then, Christianity is what the Church, in the properly constituted way, pronounces it to be. When we come to the Orthodox Protestant, the matter at first sight would seem to be equally clear. The Bible is held to be infallibly inspired, and Christianity is simply what the Bible declares it to be. But now we are met with an element of confusion.
