Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gomez's star quality must have been evident from birth - she was named after the singer huge Latin star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. It was her mother Amanda Dawn "Mandy" Teefey, a former theatre actress, who inspired her to act. She received her first break on Barney & Friends in 2002, before being discovered by Disney when they were conducting a global casting call. She made two pilots which floundered before she was cast in the series Wizards of Waverley in 2008. During the series, she also kick-started her musical career. Typically cautious, she has said she decided to form a band to support her rather than go solo. She said she had decided to name them ‘Selena Gomez and the Scene’ to mock disparagers who criticised her for wanting to launch herself into music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the human desire to live the good life, defined as seeking that which "is good, optimal, or ultimately desirable." While there may be different ways of achieving this goal, the pathways are similar in some ways. In exploring the ways in which these paths cross, Mortensen asserts that an ability to sustain optimal human relations--that is, healthy communication, interpersonal compatibility, and prosocial influence--is a standard against which the good life can be measured. Optimal Human Relations explores the favorable conditions for human beings to live the best possible way of life imaginable; it both argues the case for and documents recent advances in the study of social influences on everyday life. Social influences help to develop an expansive sense of intrinsic motivation in daily encounters with others. While optimal relations are not easily achieved or maintained, it is through healthy relationships that one may pursue pleasure and happiness--even meaning, importance, and significance with valued companions. The cultivation of physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health through these relations generates an enhanced sense of well-being, growth, and maturity. Mature individuals are more likely to maintain optimal relations by counting daily blessings more than lamenting routine burdens. This inspirational conception of "the good life" invites productive inquiry into the conditions responsible for the pursuit of optimal conditions, fulfilled expectations, and a rich, vital, way of life. It is through this lens that Mortensen measures the good life, pointing to these aspects of human communication as a litmus test of the relative importance of individualistic and collective orientations. Along the way, the reader discovers who and what we are in relation to the quality of the world in which we reside alongside those who journey with us.

Separated from the character-building hardships endured by their parents and grandparents, unable to find a faith of their own or for that matter to believe in much of anything at all, the characters of Bad Jews and Other Stories wander through the moral landscape of their lives in a loopy version of the Children of Israel?s meandering way home. Along the way they suffer a range of antic, often absurd misadventures. And as often as not they find redemption as well as disaster.

Book excerpt: This work of feminist fiction has five parts: I. Epistles: epistles written by Eve, Cain’s wife, Noah’s wife, Delilah, the Queen of Sheba, Mary, and others – as if they were feminist II. Myths: the myths within the myths revealed – what might Pandora, Circe, Penelope, Eurydice, Persephone, the Gorgons, and others have thought and done if they had not been the creations of a chauvinist patriarchy? III. Letters: letters that might have been written by Lady Godiva, Milton’s daughter, Rubens’ model, Mozart’s mother, Freud’s wife, Plato’s students, and others – assuming a feminist consciousness IV. Soliloquies: soliloquies delivered by Juliet, Ophelia, Lady MacBeth, Kate, Desdemona, Regan, Miranda, and others – protesting the role given to them by Shakespeare V. Fairy Tales: the classic fairy tales retold – what would have happened if Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and others had been strong and critical girls and women living today? “...an excellent and much recommended pick for unique fiction collections.” Michael Dunford, Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: This title provides a unique theoretical framework for multi-mode resonant antennas and different approaches to their implementation, with an emphasis on mode gauge functionality, a new concept for a clear identification and flexible control of all usable resonant modes in multi-mode resonant antenna design. The book commences by advancing a generalized odd-even mode theory as a general theoretical framework for resonant elementary antennas, offering new insights into the classical problem of coupling effects between antenna and transmission lines and helping reveal the operation mechanism of elementary antennas under multi-mode resonance. Then, the concept of "mode gauge" is developed and employed for wideband elementary antenna design by simultaneously exciting and tuning multiple resonant modes within a single radiator. Apart from theoretical explorations, the authors also provide analysis of up-to-date implementation of multi-mode resonant elementary antennas with different functionalities, including wideband antennas, circularly polarized antennas, multiband antennas, frequency scanning antennas and low-profile antennas. Academics, students and professional engineers at all levels will greatly benefit from the book and will be provided with historical background, state-of-the-art methodology, useful design tools and multiple applications of multi-mode resonant antennas.

Book excerpt: Before they emerged as Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed and recorded as Tom and Jerry, after the cat and mouse duo of animated comedy. The pair met at school in Queens, New York, in 1953 and shared an interest in folk revival music as it entered the popular consciousness. Inspired by the Everly Brothers, who merged country with rock and roll, young Paul and Art endeavored to write songs and arrange vocal harmonies. In 1957, they covered Everly Brothers’ “Hey, Schoolgirl” for Big Records when they were only 15 years old. “Hey, Schoolgirl in the second row / The teacher’s lookin’ over / So I got to whisper way down low,” the song goes. Tom and Jerry reached number 49 on the pop chart with that song. Another seven years went by before the pair recorded again. When Simon was working for a publisher to sell songs for recording, he introduced some of his own songs for consideration. He and Garfunkel auditioned, and, beyond expectation, Columbia Records offered them a recording deal. In 1964 they released Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.

This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Bryan Adams got into the music business as a young teenager and he has been performing around the world ever since. Over 35 years later, Adams has 10 studio albums, five live albums, five compilation albums, and two movie soundtracks to his credit. His songs have also been featured in films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Don Juan DeMarco. Adams is also a social activist and an accomplished photographer, working with top magazines and fashion designers while still continuing his music career. Adams got into music at a young age, dropping out of high school to pursue his dream of becoming a singer and guitar player. A dishwashing job allowed him to afford his first guitar and his upstart career took a turn for the better when he met Jim Vallance in 1978. Vallance had been a successful drummer but was now looking to start a solo career. Recognizing Adams’ talent, Vallance took the younger man under his wing and the two started writing songs together. Vallance used his connections to get them into the studio and Adams would then sing the lyrics for their songs. They quickly got signed to a record deal later that year. The duo started out writing and recording songs that were included in other artists’ albums but Adams then released a solo album worldwide in 1980, though it was not distributed in the United States. He followed that album up with a second in 1981 that did see a U.S. release. His third album Cuts Like a Knife came out in 1983 and propelled Adams into international stardom, thanks in part to the success of lead single Straight From the Heart. Adams followed the album up with Reckless in 1984 and the record became his all-time best seller. Summer of ‘69 and Heaven were two of the main singles off the album and helped push sales to over 5 million in the United States. His popularity carried into the 90s with multiple albums landing on the Billboard charts both internationally and domestically, though his albums tended to sell better in the U.K. and Canada compared to the United States. (Everything I Do) I Do For You was an international hit single that Adams wrote and performed as the theme song to the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Several compilation and “Best-Of” albums also came out throughout the decade as Adams continued to tour worldwide in support of his studio releases. Adams became more involved in film soundtracks as the new millenium began, writing and recording music for films such as Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Guardian, and Bobby. More studio albums followed, though sales were lower than what they had been during his peak in the 80s. He continues to tour, record music and run his charity foundation that focuses on providing educational opportunities for children around the world. Adams has proven himself a special artist in part because of his versatility. He is known for rock anthems such as Summer of ‘69 while also associated with sentimental ballads such as Please Forgive Me. Add in his work in feature film scores and his photography success and it’s easy to see why Adams’ work has endured for decades... Buy the book to continue reading! Follow @hyperink on Twitter! Book excerpt: The classification system presented in this volume is based largely on Dewey's magnum opus Decimal System (1876) and Ockerbloom's excellent Free Decimal Correspondence (2010). It has been slightly updated for improved benefit to librarians. It shortens subject headings, provides a more intuitive sequence of topics, and reduces the number of classes to nine-freeing up the tenth class for any purpose of the librarian's choosing. It retains Dewey's classic preface and card catalog appendix, removes the outdated index, retains most of Ockerbloom's scope and nomenclature, and adds guidance for digital collections.
