Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK F. Scott Fitzgerald's grand story about disillusionment and hopeless love has charmed generations of readers and critics, but perhaps The Great Gatsby's greatest fan was its author. He told his editor, “I think my novel is about the best American novel ever written. So Fitzgerald is not the most humble man, but as the author of a novel which both chastises and celebrates humanity's vices, that fact should not come as such a surprise. The Great Gatsby, though a rather slender book, expounds upon larger-than-life flaws and mistakes of its characters. It is a story of more than just people, but of a country and a society lost amidst their own wealth, searching for their individuality and salvation. MEET THE AUTHOR Hayley Igarashi is a student at UC Davis preparing to graduate this summer with a degree in both history and philosophy. She has been writing fictional short stories since she was a child, and a couple of her pieces have even been published in small online magazines. Only recently has she discovered how nice writing about real life can be, a realization that took surprisingly long considering her background in history. She likes to read and at the moment is most inspired by the writings of Kurt Vonnegut, Jonathan Safran Foer, Kazuo Ishiguro, and because everyone needs a guilty pleasure, George R. R. Martin. When not studying for school, she enjoys doing normal things like hanging out with friends and family and watching movies. Items on her bucket list include sky-diving, running a marathon, writing a full-length novel, and learning how to cook something that tastes good. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK I first read Hemingway’s posthumously-published memoir, A Moveable Feast (1964), when I was spending my junior year abroad studying at the University of Exeter in England, and I fell in love with the book. I think it appealed to me especially since I imagined myself to be -- like Hemingway and his friends -- an expatriate, at least for those nine months. It’s an exquisitely readable book, peppered with all sorts of literary figures I knew through English classes: Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ford Madox Ford. There is nothing better for a young reader than to learn the secrets and hear the voices of writers known only through their novels, stories, and poems. A Moveable Feast brings them and the 1920s Parisian literary culture that surrounded them alive. MEET THE AUTHOR professional writer Vivian Wagner has wide-ranging interests, from technology and business to music and motorcycles. She writes features regularly for ECT News Network, and her work has also appeared in American Profile, Entrepreneur, Bluegrass Unlimited, and many other publications. She is also the author of Fiddle: One Woman, Four Strings, and 8,000 Miles of Music (Citadel 2010). For more about her, visit her website at www.vivianwagner.net. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK A Moveable Feast is an episodic book, with short chapters devoted to various people, themes, and locations important to Hemingway during the period he and Hadley lived in Paris from 1921 to 1926. The book is roughly chronological, beginning when Hemingway and Hadley first arrive in Paris and ending when Hemingway has an affair and their marriage begins to fall apart. The book’s first chapter is called “A Good Café on the Place St.-Michel,” and it gives readers a first glimpse into the world that Hemingway inhabits. He describes how he’s writing about Michigan and his boyhood while being in the café, and the perspective he has in this opening scene encapsulates the expatriate perspective he has throughout the book: “I was writing about up in Michigan and since it was a wild, cold blowing day it was that sort of day in the story. Book excerpt: Library of America’s authoritative Fitzgerald edition continues with his greatest masterpiece and best story collection of stories in newly edited texts This long-awaited second volume of Library of America’s authoritative edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald features the author’s acknowledged masterpiece and most popular book, The Great Gatsby. It was Gatsby that solidified his reputation as the chronicler of the Jazz Age and established him as one of the leading American novelists of his generation. Perhaps no other novel of the twentieth century makes a greater claim to being our Great American Novel—for its poetic prose, its exploration of the broad, intertwined themes of money, class, and American optimism (Daisy Buchanan’s voice is “full of money”), its dominance of high school and college curricula, and its claims upon the public imagination. The novel is presented in a newly edited text, correcting numerous errors and restoring Fitzgerald’s preferred American spellings. Also included in this volume are Fitzgerald’s third collection of stories, All the Sad Young Men, which includes some of the author’s best short fiction—"Winter Dreams,” “The Rich Boy,” and “Absolution”—as well as a generous selection of stories and nonfiction from the period 1920–1926, all in newly corrected texts.
