Book excerpt: How to Teach Maths challenges everything you thought you knew about how maths is taught in classrooms. Award-winning author Steve Chinn casts a critical eye over many of the long-established methods and beliefs of maths teaching. Drawing from decades of classroom experience and research, he shows how mathematics teaching across the whole ability range can be radically improved by learning from the successful methods and principles used for the bottom quartile of achievers: the outliers. Chinn guides readers through re-adjusting the presentation of maths to learners, considering learners’ needs first, and explains the importance of securing early learning to create a conceptual foundation for later success. This highly accessible book uses clear diagrams and examples to support maths teachers through many critical issues, including the following: The context of maths education today Topics that cause students the most difficulty Effective communication in the mathematics classroom Addressing maths anxiety The perfect resource for maths teachers at all levels, this book is especially useful for those wanting to teach the foundations of mathematics in a developmental way to learners of all ages and abilities. It has the potential to change the way maths is taught forever.

Book excerpt: Why are we all taught maths for years of our lives? Does it really empower everyone? Or fail most and disenfranchise many? Is it crucial for the AI age or an obsolete rite of passage? The Math(s) Fix: An Education Blueprint for the AI Age is a groundbreaking book that exposes why maths education is in crisis worldwide and how the only fix is a fundamentally new mainstream subject. It argues that today's maths education is not working to elevate society with modern computation, data science and AI. Instead, students are subjugated to compete with what computers do best, and lose. This is the only book to explain why being "bad at maths" may be as much the subject's fault as the learner's: how a stuck educational ecosystem has students, parents, teachers, schools, employers and policymakers running in the wrong direction to catch up with real-world requirements. But it goes further too"¬‚¬"for the first time setting out a completely alternative vision for a core computational school subject to fix the problem and seed more general reformation of education for the AI age.

It gives guidance on using physical resources to demonstrate key concepts, extended examples on how to teach different curriculum topics and how to plan for small-step progression. It argues that effective mastery teaching requires careful and knowledgeable support for primary teachers who may not yet be maths specialists. Book excerpt: Maths Problem Solving, Year 6 is the sixth book in a six-book series that has been written for teachers to use during the numeracy lesson. It covers the 'solving problems' objectives from the Numeracy Framework. The book contains photocopiable resources organized into three chapters: making decisions; reasoning about numbers or shapes; problems involving real life, money or measures. Each chapter contains six lessons, one for each half term. There are three diferentiated worksheets in each chapter, making it easy to use the book in a mixed-ability classroom. The length of the problems are varied with short, medium and more extended problems for children to solve. The problems on each page are mixed so the children do not assume that the solution process is the same each time, but have to understand the problem. They are varied in their complexity and are presented in a meaningful, age-appropriate manner with topics the children will find relevant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PRAISE FOR Banking on Change "In this 140th Anniversary celebration book, The London Institute of Banking and Finance stick to their core function of educating us all, but especially aspirant bankers, on the role and concerns of (retail and commercial) banking in the UK. They have assembled a well-chosen group of practitioners from a range of professions to write clear and easily assimilable essays, no technical expertise required, on a wide variety of current banking issues. If you want to learn about the current practices and problems of UK retail banking, this book must be essential reading." —Charles Goodhart, emeritus professor of banking and finance at the London School of Economics "In this important book, a line from Bill Allen's contribution is key: 'Nobody can predict the ferocity of the gale of creative destruction' that faces the financial services sector. True; but if you read the many and varied contributions, you'll have a pretty good idea. Moreover, you'll understand how we (that is, bankers) got here – and what we should do to make the industry more competitive, fairer and more genuinely useful. It is a soup-to-nuts look at banking – from the early days of the Institute of Banking, through the go-go years of ifs, to a present and future that are likely to be dominated by technology. It is well-worth a long read." —Andrew Hilton, director, Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation "If you were to imagine what a book celebrating 140 years of financial knowledge might contain, you could not come up with a better selection than this. As well as a historic sweep – from no-tech to fintech, the decline of trust and the rise of competition – today's hot subjects are addressed, including sustainable investing, cultural diversity and digital identity. The cradle-to-grave nature of the industry is captured in pieces about financial education and pensions. And it's well written, setting the scene nicely for the next era." —Jane Fuller, Fellow of the Society of Investment Professionals Financial services are undergoing rapid, and potentially dramatic, change. What will happen in payments, in sustainable finance and in fintech? How can the industry boost financial inclusion and ensure that its workforce has the skills it needs to meet regulatory requirements and to compete with new entrants? Can trade finance rise to the challenge of underpinning global trade for all and help the developing world avoid "financial abandonment"? What do financial services need to do to protect our digital identities? Banking on Change provides insights by experts and influencers from across the financial services industry on these and other questions. Published to mark the 140th anniversary of The London Institute of Banking & Finance, this book is intended to be of lasting value to both students and professionals.

This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Griffith-Jones is to chair the new Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Although the FCA is a successor body to the Financial Services Authority (FSA), his is not a continuity role. The Committee believes that the FCA can be radically different from its predecessor under the new chair in at least four respects: He must restore the credibility of the conduct regulator. Although a great deal of time and effort was put into conduct matters, the FSA left consumers exposed to some of the worst scandals in UK financial history. The Committee expects Mr Griffith-Jones and his board to ensure that the new organisation adopts a radically different approach. It is noted that the PRA, which has assumed responsibility for most prudential aspects of the FSA's work, has done this, with its adoption of a move to judgement-based regulation. The FCA has different objectives from the old FSA: as well as having to ensure that markets work well, it has objectives with regard to consumer protection, the integrity of the UK financial system, and competition. The Committee has criticised the complexity of the objectives set out for the FCA in the Financial Services Bill; but Mr Griffith-Jones and the FCA's senior leadership will need to think about the inter-relationship of the FCA's objectives and how meaningfully to fulfil them. The Treasury Committee will engage in an oversight role of the governance at the FCA and with the commitments that Mr Griffith-Jones has made to the Committee, Parliament will expect the new FCA to respond to Treasury Committee requests for information promptly and thoroughly.
