"If it were possible to light up a human body from the inside, so that it should become transparent to us, like a glass beehive, in which we see every movement of busy wing or tentacle, so that in like manner we might discern every little beating nerve of man, every throb and palpitation of remotest vein and artery, it would be an apt figure of how Meredith treats the souls of men." The New Realism gives four brief but sympathetic and luminous studies of Olive Schreiner, Mark Rutherford, Rudyard Kipling, and J. M.
