Book excerpt: The work in this dissertation is centered around the study of quasiregularly elliptic manifolds. These are manifolds that admit quasiregular maps from Euclidean space. The research of quasiregular maps is motivated by the pursuit of extending theorems from complex analysis and conformal geometry to higher dimensional settings. We first provide a new proof for the Rickman-Picard theorem, which states that a non-constant quasiregular map from Euclidean space to a sphere may omit a bounded number of points depending on the dilatation of the map. We next show that a closed, connected and orientable Riemannian manifold that is quasiregularly elliptic must have bounded dimension of the cohomology independent of the distortion of the map. The bound for the dimension is sharp and proves the Bonk-Heinonen conjecture. A corollary of this theorem answers an open problem posed by Gromov in 1981. He asked whether there exists a simply connected manifold that does not admit a quasiregular mapping from Euclidean space. The result shown gives an affirmative answer to this question. Lastly, we study the behavior of branched covers whose image of their branch set is contained in a simplicial complex. The image of the branch set of a piecewise linear branched cover between piecewise linear manifolds is a simplicial complex. We demonstrate that the reverse implication also holds. A branched cover from a sphere to a sphere with the image of the branch set contained in a codimension two simplicial complex is equivalent up to homeomorphism to a PL mapping. This extends a result by Martio and Srebro in the three dimensional setting.

Book excerpt: This work studies equivariant linear second order elliptic operators [italic capital]P on a connected noncompact manifold [italic capital]X with a given action of a group [italic capital]G. The action is assumed to be cocompact, meaning that [italic capitals]GV = [italic capital]X for some compact subset of [italic capital]V of [italic capital]X. The aim is to study the structure of the convex cone of all positive solutions of [italic capital]P[italic]u = 0.

Book Synopsis Manifolds and Modular Forms by : Friedrich Hirzebruch
Download or read book Manifolds and Modular Forms written by Friedrich Hirzebruch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory of elliptic genera due to Ochanine, Landweber, Stong, and others. The theory describes a new cobordism invariant for manifolds in terms of modular forms. The book evolved from notes of a course given at the University of Bonn. After providing some background material elliptic genera are constructed, including the classical genera signature and the index of the Dirac operator as special cases. Various properties of elliptic genera are discussed, especially their behaviour in fibre bundles and rigidity for group actions. For stably almost complex manifolds the theory is extended to elliptic genera of higher level. The text is in most parts self-contained. The results are illustrated by explicit examples and by comparison with well-known theorems. The relevant aspects of the theory of modular forms are derived in a seperate appendix, providing also a useful reference for mathematicians working in this field.

Book Synopsis Diffeomorphisms of Elliptic 3-Manifolds by : Sungbok Hong
Download or read book Diffeomorphisms of Elliptic 3-Manifolds written by Sungbok Hong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work concerns the diffeomorphism groups of 3-manifolds, in particular of elliptic 3-manifolds. These are the closed 3-manifolds that admit a Riemannian metric of constant positive curvature, now known to be exactly the closed 3-manifolds that have a finite fundamental group. The (Generalized) Smale Conjecture asserts that for any elliptic 3-manifold M, the inclusion from the isometry group of M to its diffeomorphism group is a homotopy equivalence. The original Smale Conjecture, for the 3-sphere, was proven by J. Cerf and A. Hatcher, and N. Ivanov proved the generalized conjecture for many of the elliptic 3-manifolds that contain a geometrically incompressible Klein bottle. The main results establish the Smale Conjecture for all elliptic 3-manifolds containing geometrically incompressible Klein bottles, and for all lens spaces L(m,q) with m at least 3. Additional results imply that for a Haken Seifert-fibered 3 manifold V, the space of Seifert fiberings has contractible components, and apart from a small list of known exceptions, is contractible. Considerable foundational and background

Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to introduce the reader to some of the main techniques, ideas and concepts frequently used in modern geometry. It starts from scratch and it covers basic topics such as differential and integral calculus on manifolds, connections on vector bundles and their curvatures, basic Riemannian geometry, calculus of variations, DeRham cohomology, integral geometry (tube and Crofton formulas), characteristic classes, elliptic equations on manifolds and Dirac operators. The new edition contains a new chapter on spectral geometry presenting recent results which appear here for the first time in printed form.
Book Synopsis Manifolds of Nonpositive Curvature by : Werner Ballmann
Download or read book Manifolds of Nonpositive Curvature written by Werner Ballmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a complete and self-contained description of new results in the theory of manifolds of nonpositive curvature. It is based on lectures delivered by M. Gromov at the Collège de France in Paris. Therefore this book may also serve as an introduction to the subject of nonpositively curved manifolds. The latest progress in this area is reflected in the article of W. Ballmann describing the structure of manifolds of higher rank.
Book Synopsis Prescribing the Curvature of a Riemannian Manifold by : Jerry L. Kazdan
Download or read book Prescribing the Curvature of a Riemannian Manifold written by Jerry L. Kazdan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1985-12-31 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes were the basis for a series of ten lectures given in January 1984 at Polytechnic Institute of New York under the sponsorship of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences and the National Science Foundation. The lectures were aimed at mathematicians who knew either some differential geometry or partial differential equations, although others could understand the lectures. Author's Summary:Given a Riemannian Manifold $(M,g)$ one can compute the sectional, Ricci, and scalar curvatures. In other special circumstances one also has mean curvatures, holomorphic curvatures, etc. The inverse problem is, given a candidate for some curvature, to determine if there is some metric $g$ with that as its curvature. One may also restrict ones attention to a special class of metrics, such as Kahler or conformal metrics, or those coming from an embedding. These problems lead one to (try to) solve nonlinear partial differential equations. However, there may be topological or analytic obstructions to solving these equations. A discussion of these problems thus requires a balanced understanding between various existence and non-existence results. The intent of this volume is to give an up-to-date survey of these questions, including enough background, so that the current research literature is accessible to mathematicians who are not necessarily experts in PDE or differential geometry. The intended audience is mathematicians and graduate students who know either PDE or differential geometry at roughly the level of an intermediate graduate course.

Book Synopsis Manifolds with Cusps of Rank One by : Werner Müller
Download or read book Manifolds with Cusps of Rank One written by Werner Müller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manifolds investigated in this monograph are generalizations of (XX)-rank one locally symmetric spaces. In the first part of the book the author develops spectral theory for the differential Laplacian operator associated to the so-called generalized Dirac operators on manifolds with cusps of rank one. This includes the case of spinor Laplacians on (XX)-rank one locally symmetric spaces. The time-dependent approach to scattering theory is taken to derive the main results about the spectral resolution of these operators. The second part of the book deals with the derivation of an index formula for generalized Dirac operators on manifolds with cusps of rank one. This index formula is used to prove a conjecture of Hirzebruch concerning the relation of signature defects of cusps of Hilbert modular varieties and special values of L-series. This book is intended for readers working in the field of automorphic forms and analysis on non-compact Riemannian manifolds, and assumes a knowledge of PDE, scattering theory and harmonic analysis on semisimple Lie groups.
Book Synopsis Hörmander Spaces, Interpolation, and Elliptic Problems by : Vladimir A. Mikhailets
Download or read book Hörmander Spaces, Interpolation, and Elliptic Problems written by Vladimir A. Mikhailets and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph gives a detailed exposition of the theory of general elliptic operators (scalar and matrix) and elliptic boundary value problems in Hilbert scales of Hörmander function spaces. This theory was constructed by the authors in a number of papers published in 2005–2009. It is distinguished by a systematic use of the method of interpolation with a functional parameter of abstract Hilbert spaces and Sobolev inner product spaces. This method, the theory and their applications are expounded for the first time in the monographic literature. The monograph is written in detail and in a reader-friendly style. The complete proofs of theorems are given. This monograph is intended for a wide range of mathematicians whose research interests concern with mathematical analysis and differential equations.
