Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas is a graduate-level text — complete with 138 assigned problems and the results from several classic experiments — which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of one-component and multispecies charged particle systems in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties. Book excerpt: Significant progress was made in the understanding of the collisional stabilization of the high-frequency two-stream instability in a relativistic electron beam through a rigorous Vlasov treatment. Substantially different scaling with parameters are obtained in comparison with previous, essentially phenomenological, models and we have gained insight into the mechanism of the stabilization process. Further investigation of the 2-D case remains to be done. The issue of stabilization of the two-stream instability in finite geometry is as yet unexplored as is that of nonlinear saturation, by trapping, of the instability in the presence of momentum spread on the beam and collisions on the plasma electrons. These are important in the application of relativistic electron beams to the heating of dense plasmas and possibly in the interpretation of neutral gas propagation experiments. Extension of our research into these areas will necessarily rely on the investigations outlined above.

The prospect of operating these continuously tunable, high gain devices at high efficiencies by appropriately tapering the wiggler field parameters has significantly increased the interest in these devices. Variable parameter wiggler free electron laser have been previously considered for operation in the amplifier configuration and also in the micro-pulse, low gain operation in the oscillator configuration. The present analysis extends the range of application to the case of intense, long pulsed electron beams in which the self-consistently derived space charge potential (arising from the axial bunching of the particles in the beat wave) is not negligible. Also included in this analysis are arbitrarily relativistic beams (i.e., no ultra-relativistic beam approximation). We have obtained theoretical expressions for the nonlinear efficiency and present a comparison of these results with a fully nonlinear simulation.
