Book excerpt: This study is concerned with viscous/inviscid interactions in two and quasi-three-dimensional supersonic flows with separation. Interaction effects are modeled through the so called 'displacement body concept', wherein it is assumed that the inviscid flow 'sees' an effective body obtained by adding the displacement thickness to the original surface. The governing equations in the viscous region are taken to be the interacting boundary-layer equations and an alternating-direction-implicit (ADI) finite difference scheme is employed to obtain their solution. This technique is applied to the quasi-three-dimensional problems resulting from flow past swept (yawed) and axisymmetric compression surfaces. Detailed distributions of surface pressure, skin friction and heat-transfer are presented for Mach numbers of 2 to 6. It is found that both cross flow and axisymmetric effects are easily accommodated in the solution technique and that the predicted results are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with available experimental data.

Book excerpt: The viscous supersonic flow over a sharp cone at incidence is examined numerically with a coupled strongly implicit algorithm for the properties in the plane normal to the cone axis. The Navier-Stokes equations are considered in a boundary layer-like or parabolized manner and global relaxation is considered for the pressure interaction. It is shown that departure effects can be effectively eliminated by forward differencing for the axial pressure gradient. Moreover, this approximation retains the implicit free pressure interaction required for geometries where axial flow separation is possible. (Author).

The proceedings published following these symposia have become recognized both as basic reference texts in the subject area and as useful guides to progress in the field. Book excerpt: The paper presents results of analysis and experiment bearing on three-dimensional effects in hypersonic interaction, with emphasis on a sharp-edged rectangular corner intersection aligned with the flow and a sharp-edged plate of finite span. A powerful tool for dealing with such complex problems is the 'merged-layer approximation' which obviates the need for complicated matching procedures in many instances of importance although numerical computation is required. This type of flow, in which various elements are strongly coupled and even merged, is shown to have features in common with low-speed three-dimensional boundary layers such as those along an interior corner or along the edge of a quarter-infinite plate. In the low speed cases the essential viscous-inviscid interaction coupling enters through the weak, Reynolds-number dependent, displacements of the inviscid flow which must be taken into account even to lowest order. The attendant analytics and numerics are in many respects more difficult to deal with than those of the hypersonic counterparts. (Author).

It includes the Stewartson Memorial Lecture of Professor J. H. Whitelaw, and is divided into three parts. The first is a collection of papers that describe the status of current technology in two- and three-dimensional steady flows, the second deals with two- and three-dimensional unsteady flows, and the papers in the third address stability and transition. Each of the three parts begins with an overview of current research, as described in the following chapters. The individual papers are edited versions of the selected papers originally submitted to the symposium. Four years have passed since the Third Symposium, and certain trends be come clear if one compares the papers contained in this volume with those of previous volumes. There are more three- than two-dimensional problems consid ered in Part 1 and the latter address more difficult problems than in the past, for example, the extension to higher angles of attack, to transonic flow, to leading edge ice accretion, and to thick hydrofoils. The large number of papers in the first part reflects the emphasis of current research and development and the needs of industry.
