Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is widely accepted as the correct theory of the strong nuclear force in elementary particle physics. The precision to which QCD has been tested is relatively limited, however, compared to the precision to which other interactions such as the electro-weak one have been tested. In part, this is because the large value of the QCD coupling constant, [alpha]{sub s}, renders theoretical calculations based on perturbation theory relatively imprecise. The confinement of quarks and gluons inside hadrons also leads to uncertainty because the theoretical predictions cannot, in general, be tested directly against the experimental measurements but are subject to hadronization corrections. From an experimental standpoint, it has proven difficult to isolate gluon jets inside multi-jet events in an unbiased manner so as to determine gluon jet properties using model independent methods. Basic quark-gluon interactions such as the four-jet matrix element in ee− annihilations have been relatively untested due to the lack of a data sample with sufficient statistics. Perturbation theory has essentially nothing to say about the properties of the hadronization process itself. It is for these reasons that QCD has remained relatively untested.

Book excerpt: We present studies of 3-jet final states from hadronic Z0 decays recorded by the SLD experiment. A comparison of the strong couplings of light, c, and b quarks is made using 3-jet rates. We have performed a detailed study of e+e---> b anti-bg final states, in which the quark, antiquark, and gluon jets are identified. The gluon energy spectrum, measured over the full kinematic range, is consistent with the predictions of QCD, and we derive a limit on an anomalous chromomagnetic bbg coupling. We measure the parity violation in Z0 decays into b anti-bg to be consistent with the predictions of electroweak theory and QCD, and perform new tests of T- and CP-conservation at the bbg vertex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important tool in quark-gluon plasma studies at RHIC has been the measurement of dijets investigated via leading hadron correlations. With much higher rates for hard processes at the Large Hadron Collider, studies of Z°-tagged jets become possible. A clear experimental signature is provided by the measurement of muon pairs from the Z° decays, for which CMS is an ideally suited detector. Instead of measuring back-to-back correlations of two strongly interacting particles, one side is replaced by an electromagnetic probe which propagates through the plasma undisturbed and provides a measurement of the energy of the initial hard scattering. We propose to use lepton-pair tagged jets to study medium-induced partonic energy loss and to measure in-medium parton fragmentation functions. The lepton pairs from semileptonic decays of heavy meson pairs (B{bar B} and D{bar D}) are a background source for the tagged dilepton-jet signal. We present the calculated signal rates (using PYTHIA) and background rates (using HVQMNR). We also discuss strategies for maximizing the signal-to-background ratio.

Book Synopsis A Measurement of Quark and Gluon Jet Differences at the Z° Resonance by :
Download or read book A Measurement of Quark and Gluon Jet Differences at the Z° Resonance written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have studied differences between quark and gluon jets using 3-jet events in hadronic decays of Z° bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Gluon jets were identified in symmetric 3-jet events containing one jet tagged as a heavy quark jet and compared with a mixed sample of quark and gluon jets and also with a mixed sample of light quark (u, d and s) and gluon jets. Their preliminary results show that the particle multiplicity in gluon jets is higher than that in light quark jets. These results are in qualitative agreement with QCD expectations. Differences are also observed in particle energy spectra and the jet widths, consistent with QCD expectations.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the production cross section for ZW and ZZ boson pairs in final states with a pair of charged leptons, from the decay of a Z boson, and at least two jets, from the decay of a W or Z boson, using the full sample of proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to 8.9 fb(̂-1) of integrated luminosity. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria. We determine the production cross section to be 2.5 +2.0 -1.0 pb (

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: We report the first model independent measurement of charged particle multiplicities in quark and gluon jets, Nq_ and Ng_, produced at the Tevatron in proton-antiproton collisions with center-of-mass energy 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurements are made for jets with average energies 41 and 53 GeV by counting charged particle tracks in cones with opening angle of thetac_=0.28, 0.36, and 0.47 rad around the jet axis. The corresponding jet hardness Q=Ej_et*thetac_ varies in the range from 12 GeV to 25 GeV. At Q=19.2 GeV, the ratio of multiplicities r=Ng_/Nq_ is found to be 1.64"0.17, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are added in quadrature. The results are in agreement with re-summed perturbative QCD calculations and are consistent with recent ee− measurements.

In addition to studying flavor-inclusive Z° decays, we compare particle production in decays into light, c and b flavors and compare production in gluon jets with that in light quark jets, where the jet flavors are selected using precision vertex information.
Book Synopsis Data-driven Extraction of the Substructure of Quark and Gluon Jets in Proton-proton and Heavy-ion Collisions by : Yueyang Ying

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modification of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the size of the modifications differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We demonstrate a fully data-driven method for separating quark and gluon contributions to jet observables using a statistical technique called topic modeling. We will also demonstrate that jet substructures, such as jet shapes and jet fragmentation function, could be extracted using this data-driven method. This proof-of-concept study is based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the PYQUEN generator with statistics accessible in Run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider. These results suggest the potential for an experimental determination of quark- and gluon-jet spectra and their substructures.
