Book excerpt: In the last 20 years, the study of operator algebras has developed from a branch of functional analysis to a central field of mathematics with applications and connections with different areas in both pure mathematics (foliations, index theory, K-theory, cyclic homology, affine Kac--Moody algebras, quantum groups, low dimensional topology) and mathematical physics (integrable theories, statistical mechanics, conformal field theories and the string theories of elementary particles). The theory of operator algebras was initiated by von Neumann and Murray as a tool for studying group representations and as a framework for quantum mechanics, and has since kept in touch with its roots in physics as a framework for quantum statistical mechanics and the formalism of algebraic quantum field theory. However, in 1981, the study of operator algebras took a new turn with the introduction by Vaughan Jones of subfactor theory and remarkable connections were found with knot theory, 3-manifolds, quantum groups and integrable systems in statistical mechanics and conformal field theory. The purpose of this book, one of the first in the area, is to look at these combinatorial-algebraic developments from the perspective of operator algebras; to bring the reader to the frontline of research with the minimum of prerequisites from classical theory.

Book excerpt: In this book we describe the elementary theory of operator algebras and parts of the advanced theory which are of relevance, or potentially of relevance, to mathematical physics. Subsequently we describe various applications to quantum statistical mechanics. At the outset of this project we intended to cover this material in one volume but in the course of develop ment it was realized that this would entail the omission of various interesting topics or details. Consequently the book was split into two volumes, the first devoted to the general theory of operator algebras and the second to the applications. This splitting into theory and applications is conventional but somewhat arbitrary. In the last 15-20 years mathematical physicists have realized the importance of operator algebras and their states and automorphisms for problems offield theory and statistical mechanics. But the theory of 20 years ago was largely developed for the analysis of group representations and it was inadequate for many physical applications. Thus after a short honey moon period in which the new found tools of the extant theory were applied to the most amenable problems a longer and more interesting period ensued in which mathematical physicists were forced to redevelop the theory in relevant directions. New concepts were introduced, e. g. asymptotic abelian ness and KMS states, new techniques applied, e. g. the Choquet theory of barycentric decomposition for states, and new structural results obtained, e. g. the existence of a continuum of nonisomorphic type-three factors.

Book excerpt: Providing an introduction to current research topics in functional analysis and its applications to quantum physics, this book presents three lectures surveying recent progress and open problems. A special focus is given to the role of symmetry in non-commutative probability, in the theory of quantum groups, and in quantum physics. The first lecture presents the close connection between distributional symmetries and independence properties. The second introduces many structures (graphs, C*-algebras, discrete groups) whose quantum symmetries are much richer than their classical symmetry groups, and describes the associated quantum symmetry groups. The last lecture shows how functional analytic and geometric ideas can be used to detect and to quantify entanglement in high dimensions. The book will allow graduate students and young researchers to gain a better understanding of free probability, the theory of compact quantum groups, and applications of the theory of Banach spaces to quantum information. The latter applications will also be of interest to theoretical and mathematical physicists working in quantum theory.

Book excerpt: This volume presents articles from several lectures presented at the school on ``Quantum Symmetries in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics'' held in Bariloche, Argentina. The various lecturers provided significantly different points of view on several aspects of Hopf algebras, quantum group theory, and noncommutative differential geometry, ranging from analysis, geometry, and algebra to physical models, especially in connection with integrable systems and conformal field theories.Primary topics discussed in the text include subgroups of quantum $SU(N)$, quantum ADE classifications and generalized Coxeter systems, modular invariance, defects and boundaries in conformal field theory, finite dimensional Hopf algebras, Lie bialgebras and Belavin-Drinfeld triples, real forms ofquantum spaces, perturbative and non-perturbative Yang-Baxter operators, braided subfactors in operator algebras and conformal field theory, and generalized ($d$) cohomologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum groups are a generalization of the classical Lie groups and Lie algebras and provide a natural extension of the concept of symmetry fundamental to physics. This monograph is a survey of the major developments in quantum groups, using an original approach based on the fundamental concept of a tensor operator. Using this concept, properties of both the algebra and co-algebra are developed from a single uniform point of view, which is especially helpful for understanding the noncommuting co-ordinates of the quantum plane, which we interpret as elementary tensor operators. Representations of the q-deformed angular momentum group are discussed, including the case where q is a root of unity, and general results are obtained for all unitary quantum groups using the method of algebraic induction. Tensor operators are defined and discussed with examples, and a systematic treatment of the important (3j) series of operators is developed in detail. This book is a good reference for graduate students in physics and mathematics.

Book excerpt: Quantum symmetry modelled through quantum group or its dual, quantum algebra, is a very active field of relevant physical and mathematical research stimulated often by physical intuition and with promising physical applications. This volume gives some information on the progress of this field during the years after the quantum group workshop in Clausthal 1989. Quantum symmetry is connected with very different approaches and views. The field is not yet coherent; there are different notions of quantum groups and of quantum algebras through algebraic deformations of groups and algebras. Hence its development has various directions following more special mathematical and physical interests.

Book excerpt: In the course of lectures, held from summer 1993 up to summer 1994 at the Humboldt University of Berlin (SS 93), the Technical University of Berlin (WS 93/94) and the University of Potsdam (SS 94) the author presents basic operatoralgebraic material which is necessary to establish basic concepts of the algebraic quantum field theory as well as to get essential results in this field. The original ansatz of R. Haag (and others) started with the "working hypothesis" of a net of algebras of local observables. The aim of the lectures is to show that the success of this ansatz is strongly connected with deep results in the theory of operator algebras. Some characteristic mutual relations are described. Key words are "Vacuum representations on the four-dimensional Minkowski space and on the unit sphere, DHR-superselection theory, field algebra", and others. The emphasis is to make the material presented clear and readable without missing depth. The hope is to convince the reader of the beauty and stringency of this theory. While the first part of the book describes vacuum representations on the four-dimensional Minkowski space, the second part deals with the so-called DHR-superselection theory, firstly for the automorphism case and secondly for the general case. The constructions of the field algebra and the symmetry group are included. Finally, vacuum representations on the unit sphere S1 are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book studies the foundations of quantum theory through its relationship to classical physics. This idea goes back to the Copenhagen Interpretation (in the original version due to Bohr and Heisenberg), which the author relates to the mathematical formalism of operator algebras originally created by von Neumann. The book therefore includes comprehensive appendices on functional analysis and C*-algebras, as well as a briefer one on logic, category theory, and topos theory. Matters of foundational as well as mathematical interest that are covered in detail include symmetry (and its "spontaneous" breaking), the measurement problem, the Kochen-Specker, Free Will, and Bell Theorems, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, quantization, indistinguishable particles, the quantum theory of large systems, and quantum logic, the latter in connection with the topos approach to quantum theory. Book excerpt: There are many approaches to noncommutative geometry and its use in physics, the ? operator algebra and C -algebra one, the deformation quantization one, the qu- tum group one, and the matrix algebra/fuzzy geometry one. This volume introduces and develops the subject by presenting in particular the ideas and methods recently pursued by Julius Wess and his group. These methods combine the deformation quantization approach based on the - tion of star product and the deformed (quantum) symmetries methods based on the theory of quantum groups. The merging of these two techniques has proven very fruitful in order to formulate ?eld theories on noncommutative spaces. The aim of the book is to give an introduction to these topics and to prepare the reader to enter the research ?eld himself/herself. This has developed from the constant interest of Prof. W. Beiglboeck, editor of LNP, in this project, and from the authors experience in conferences and schools on the subject, especially from their interaction with students and young researchers. In fact quite a few chapters in the book were written with a double purpose, on the one hand as contributions for school or conference proceedings and on the other handaschaptersforthepresentbook.Thesearenowharmonizedandcomplemented by a couple of contributions that have been written to provide a wider background, to widen the scope, and to underline the power of our methods.

Book excerpt: Soon after the discovery of quantum mechanics, group theoretical methods were used extensively in order to exploit rotational symmetry and classify atomic spectra. And until recently it was thought that symmetries in quantum mechanics should be groups. But it is not so. There are more general algebras, equipped with suitable structure, which admit a perfectly conventional interpretation as a symmetry of a quantum mechanical system. In any case, a "trivial representation" of the algebra is defined, and a tensor product of representations. But in contrast with groups, this tensor product needs to be neither commutative nor associative. Quantum groups are special cases, in which associativity is preserved. The exploitation of such "Quantum Symmetries" was a central theme at the Ad vanced Study Institute. Introductory lectures were presented to familiarize the participants with the al gebras which can appear as symmetries and with their properties. Some models of local field theories were discussed in detail which have some such symmetries, in par ticular conformal field theories and their perturbations. Lattice models provide many examples of quantum theories with quantum symmetries. They were also covered at the school. Finally, the symmetries which are the cause of the solubility of inte grable models are also quantum symmetries of this kind. Some such models and their nonlocal conserved currents were discussed.

Greiner's highly successful course on advanced quantum mechanics and field theory. Starting from black-body radiation, the photoelectric effect and wave-particle duality, Greiner goes on to discuss the uncertainty relations, and spin and many-body systems; he includes applications to the hydrogen atom and the Stern-Gerlach and Einstein-de Haas experiments. The mathematics of representation theory, S matrices, perturbation theory, eigenvalue problems and hypergeometric differental equations are presented in detail, with 84 fully and carefully worked examples and exercises to consolidate the material. This second edition has been slightly corrected where necessary, but remains otherwise unchanged.
