Book excerpt: Chemical Reactivity in Quantum Mechanics and Information Theory introduces a thermodynamic-like description of molecular systems and provides an objective treatment of their fragments. The book formulates adequate entropic tools for probing in chemical terms and the electronic structure of molecules and rationalizing reactivity principles. It covers the information origins of chemical bonds, covalent/ionic composition, trends in molecular stability and reactivity, equilibrium polarizations and charge-transfer reconstructions of reactive complexes, as well as the phase/current promotions of molecular substrates. In addition, the book introduces a precise descriptor of molecular fragments and clarifies mostly intuitive semantics of several chemical concepts. Readers will find a precise and unbiased description of chemical reactivity phenomena in Donor-Acceptor systems in terms of quantum states and generalized concepts of Information/Communication theories. Generates a new basis for understanding the rules governing molecular processes, information origins of chemical bonding, and its covalent/ionic composition Provides an objective approach to classical issues in modern reactivity theory Offers a unifying information-theoretic perspective on electronic states

Not only are we seeking out natural remedies for ourselves—increasingly, we're also looking for ways to cut down on the amount of medication given to our children. In 100 Natural Remedies for Your Child, pediatric naturopath Dr. Jared Skowron shows parents how to prevent and treat their children's illnesses, from common ailments such as upset stomach, headaches, and minor infections to more serious problems like food allergies, diabetes, and asthma. While there is a time and place for conventional medicine, natural solutions, especially diet can be effective strategies for treating many of our children's' ailments. 100 Natural Remedies for Your Child includes: • FOODS THAT HEAL: Dietary change is the core lifestyle modification in naturopathic medical practice. Dr. Skowron shows parents the power of nutrition and reveals how foods can help prevent and treat disease. • TOXIC DETOX: From pesticides to plastics, natural medicine offers safe and proven methods for removing environmental toxins from our children's bodies. • SUPPLEMENTATION: Parents will learn which supplements are helpful for alleviating symptoms or preventing illness and what dosages are safe and effective. • ALTERNATIVE REMEDIES: Instead of heading to the drugstore for an over-the-counter remedy when their child is ill, parents will learn how to use homeopathic remedies that save money and heal their child naturally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory is a model of fundamental physics whose building blocks are one-dimensional extended objects called strings, rather than the zero-dimensional point particles that form the basis for the standard model of particle physics. The phrase is often used as shorthand for Superstring theory, as well as related theories such as M-theory. By replacing the point-like particles with strings, an apparently consistent quantum theory of gravity emerges. Moreover, it may be possible to 'unify' the known natural forces (gravitational, electromagnetic, weak nuclear and strong nuclear) by describing them with the same set of equations. Studies of string theory have revealed that it predicts higher-dimensional objects called branes. String theory strongly suggests the existence of ten or eleven (in M-theory) space-time dimensions, as opposed to the usual four (three spatial and one temporal) used in relativity theory.

Book excerpt: The growth of technology for chemical assessment has led to great developments in the investigation of chemical reactivity in recent years, but key information is often dispersed across many different research fields. Exploring both traditional and advanced methods, Chemical Reactivity, Volume 2: Approaches and Applications present the latest approaches and strategies for the computational assessment of chemical reactivity.Following an insightful introduction, the book begins with an overview of conformer searching techniques before progressing to explore numerous different techniques and methods, including confined environments, quantum similarity descriptors, volume-based thermodynamics and polarizability. A unified approach to the rules of aromaticity is followed by methods for assessing interaction energies and the role of electron density for varied different analyses. Algorithms for confirmer searching, partitioning and a whole range of quantum chemical methods are also discussed.Consolidating the knowledge of a global team of experts in the field, Chemical Reactivity, Volume 2: Approaches and Applications is a useful resource for both students and researchers interested in applying and refining their use of the latest approaches for assessing chemical reactivity in their own work. Compiles a broad range of contemporary methods and approaches for reactivity and structure prediction Highlights the application of chemical reactivity strategies for the investigation of such areas as aromaticity, halogen bonds, and electronic materials Includes discussion of computational tools for exploring molecular spaces from different angles, including interaction energies, quantum similarity, and electron density

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilary Whitehall Putnam was one of the leading philosophers of the second half of the 20th century. As student of Rudolph Carnap's and Hans Reichenbach's, he went on to become not only a major figure in North American analytic philosophy, who made significant contributions to the philosophy of mind, language, mathematics, and physics but also to the disciplines of logic, number theory, and computer science. He passed away on March 13, 2016. The present volume is a memorial to his extraordinary intellectual contributions, honoring his contributions as a philosopher, a thinker, and a public intellectual. It features essays by an international team of leading philosophers, covering all aspects of Hilary Putnam's philosophy from his work in ethics and the history of philosophy to his contributions to the philosophy of science, logic, and mathematics. Each essay is an original contribution. “Hilary Putnam is one of the most distinguished philosophers of the modern era, and just speaking personally, one of the smartest and most impressive thinkers I have ever been privileged to know—as a good friend for 70 years. The fine essays collected here are a fitting tribute to a most remarkable figure.” Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor Emeritus, Massachusetts Institute of Technology “In Engaging Putnam excellent philosophers engage the writings and ideas of Hilary Putnam, one of the most productive and influential philosophers of the last century. Putnam stands out because of the combination of brilliance and a firm grasp of reality he brought to a very broad range of issues: the logic and the philosophy of mathematics, free-will, skepticism, realism, internalism and externalism and a lot more. Along with this he offered penetrating insights about other great philosophers, from Aristotle to Wittgenstein. All great philosophers make us think. With many, we try to figure out the strange things they say. With Putnam, we are made to think about clearly explained examples and arguments that get to the heart of the issues he confronts. This book is a wonderful contribution to the continuation of Putnam-inspired thinking.” John Perry, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, Stanford University

They come from all walks of life, yet they are all united by the choices they have made. Confessions of a Caffeine Addict covers all major products including coffee, tea, yerba mate, energy and sport drinks, soda, caffeine pills, diuretics, medicine, chocolate, and other foods containing the drug. All have acted from their hearts and here, they have written from their hearts, telling the stories of what brought them along to their own conclusions about their use of caffeine. This book was written to inspire more people to make informed choices, to know that their actions do make a difference, and to know that, in their efforts to tell their tales anonymously, that they are not alone.
