A thorough understanding of general relativity is essential for navigation systems reliant upon GPS to operate with accurate and precise measurements over time. Classical general relativity predicts the existence of irremovable singularities, points in space where a mathematical description of the spacetime "breaks down" due to geodesic incompleteness. These singularities are found in a host of relativistic spacetimes, including those of observable astrophysical objects such as black hole systems. In our study, timelike curvature singularities associated with a group of super-extremal spacetimes are analyzed with a quantum wave packet in place of geodesic incompleteness. In this case, these singularities may be "removed" or "healed" without imposing boundary conditions. The super- extremal spacetimes explored include overcharged and overspinning black hole systems with naked singularities and different assumptions such as penetration by a cosmic string, a higher dimensional universe background, or in expanding or contracting cosmologies. The technique to determine quantum singularities focuses on analysis of the spatial segment of the minimally coupled, relativistic Klein Gordon wave operator for a massive scalar particle and whether it is essentially self-adjoint. Both, Weyl's limit-point, limit-circle criterion and deficiency indices are used to determine self-adjointness. By using self-adjointness properties, the spacetime can be characterized as quantum mechanically singular or non- singular. This method can help in determining the behavior of quantum particles, including the Higgs and other bosons found in spontaneous symmetry breaking models, near a black hole singularity. Our results indicate the quantum wave operator is not essentially self-adjoint for the spherically-symmetric spacetimes and spacetimes with cosmic strings. Hence, they contain quantum singularities. Finally, for a wave packet in the vicinity of a rotating black hole's naked singularity, the wave operator is not essentially-self adjoint indicating quantum singularities exist and the ring singularity is not 'healed'."--from abstract.

The spectrum of stable particles derives from the representation of our static multiverse. Its building universes give us the illusion of motion (like by a flip book). Lagrange's formalism and its canonical quantization prove as classical dead locks of obsolete centuries. The multitude of positive results - like the fine-structure constant calculated correctly, e.g. - speak in favour of New Physics, the total absence of "broken" quantum numbers in favour of a deeper "understanding" of nature.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the recent firewall controversy surrounding evaporating black holes, and shows that in the best understood example concerning electrically charged black holes with a flat event horizon in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, the firewall does not arise. The firewall, which surrounds a sufficiently old black hole, threatens to develop into a huge crisis since it could occur even when spacetime curvature is small, which contradicts general relativity. However, the end state for asymptotically flat black holes is ill-understood since their curvature becomes unbounded. This issue is avoided by working with flat charged black holes in AdS. The presence of electrical charge is crucial since black holes inevitably pick up charges throughout their long lifetime. These black holes always evolve toward extremal limit, and are then destroyed by quantum gravitational effects. This happens sooner than the time required to decode Hawking radiation so that the firewall never sets in, as conjectured by Harlow and Hayden. Motivated by the information loss paradox, the author also investigates the possibility that “monster” configurations might exist, with an arbitrarily large interior bounded by a finite surface area. Investigating such an object in AdS shows that in the best understood case, such an object -- much like a firewall -- cannot exist.

Book excerpt: The issue of singularities in General Relativity dates back to the very first solution to the equations of the theory, namely Schwarzschild's 1915 black hole. Whether they be of coordinate or curvature nature, these singularities have long puzzled physicists, who managed to better characterize them in the late 60's. This led to the famous singularity theorems applying both to cosmology and black holes, and which assume a classical behaviour of the matter content of spacetime summarized in the so-called energy conditions. The violation of these conditions by quantum phenomena supports the idea that singularities are to be seen as a limitation of General Relativity, and would be cured in a more general theory of quantum gravity. In this thesis, pending for such a theory, we aim at investigating black hole spacetimes deprived of any singularity as well as their observational consequences. To that purpose, we consider both modifications of General Relativity and the coupling of Einstein's theory to exotic matter contents. In the first case, we show that one can recover the static spherically symmetric non-singular black holes of Bardeen and Hayward in principle in mimetic gravity, and implicitly by a deformation of General Relativity's hamiltonian constraint in an approach based on loop quantum gravity techniques. In the second case, we stay inside the framework of General Relativity and consider effective energy-momentum tensors associated with a fully regular rotating Hayward metric and with a dynamical spacetime describing the formation and evaporation of a non-singular black hole. For the latter, we show that all models based on the collapse of ingoing null shells and willing to describe Hawking's evaporation are doomed to violate the energy conditions in a non-compact region of spacetime. Lastly, the theoretical study of the rotating Hayward metric comes with numerical simulations of such an object at the center of the Milky Way, using the ray-tracing code Gyoto and mimicking the known properties of the accretion structure of Sgr A*. These simulations allow exhibiting the two very different regimes of the metric, with or without horizon, and emphasize the difficulty of asserting the presence of a horizon from strong-field images as the ones provided by the Event Horizon Telescope.
