Book Synopsis Quantum Leaps: How Quantum Mechanics Took Over Science by : Jeremy Bernstein
Download or read book Quantum Leaps: How Quantum Mechanics Took Over Science written by Jeremy Bernstein and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early years of its conception, J Robert Oppenheimer spoke of quantum theory as a subject that was 'unlikely to be known to any poet or historian.' Yet, as Bernstein notes, in just sixty-odd years, one can find at least nine million entries on Google under the rubric 'quantum theory' — from poets and historians, as well as film critics and Buddhist monks. How did quantum mechanics enter general culture so pervasively?Having studied the subject for over a half-century, Jeremy Bernstein returns in this second edition to enlighten readers with a witty insider's perspective on the development of quantum theory as well as its loopholes. It is also a scintillating account of the interplay between brilliance and fallibility in humankind, even in the key figures who have shaped common understanding of quantum theory — such eminent figures include Niels Bohr, the Dalai Lama, Tom Stoppard, and most notably, John Bell who made pioneering contributions in quantum physics. At once thought-provoking and intellectual, this semi-autobiographical popular science book is highly recommended for readers with rudimentary knowledge of science history, philosophy, and naturally, physics.

Book excerpt: Quantum Mechanics in Amharic, to my knowledge, is the first book on quantum mechanics to use the rich expressions of Ethiopia's official language, which has a long history. Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics, and it is well known that the language of physics is mathematics. However, everyday language is often used to explain the laws of physics that are presented using mathematical expressions. The book's introduction briefly describes the historical roots of quantum mechanics, starting with natural philosophy from 400 BC. The text then follows the historical timeline through the present state of quantum mechanics and explores some of its possible future applications. The first chapter briefly explains the underlying physics essential to understanding quantum mechanics. The second chapter presents the Schrödinger equation and the wave function. The third chapter introduces readers to the time-independent Schrödinger equation and its applications in solving the state of a one-dimensional particle in five different potentials. The end of the book includes translations of over 130 words and lists a few useful references. Readers are given exercises to complete throughout the book, including some proofs after example proofs are presented. Books such as Quantum Mechanics in Amharic that are written in indigenous languages on advanced topics will be useful for the Einstein Project in Africa.

Book Synopsis The Atoms Of Language by : Mark C Baker
Download or read book The Atoms Of Language written by Mark C Baker and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether all human languages are fundamentally the same or different has been a subject of debate for ages. This problem has deep philosophical implications: If languages are all the same, it implies a fundamental commonality-and thus the mutual intelligibility-of human thought. We are now on the verge of answering this question. Using a twenty-year-old theory proposed by the world's greatest living linguist, Noam Chomsky, researchers have found that the similarities among languages are more profound than the differences. Languages whose grammars seem completely incompatible may in fact be structurally almost identical, except for a difference in one simple rule. The discovery of these rules and how they may vary promises to yield a linguistic equivalent of the Periodic Table of the Elements: a single framework by which we can understand the fundamental structure of all human language. This is a landmark breakthrough, both within linguistics, which will thereby become a full-fledged science for the first time, and in our understanding of the human mind.
