Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-dimensional confinement inherent in InAs self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs) yields vastly different optical properties compared to one-dimensionally confined quantum well systems. Intersubband transitions in quantum dots can emit light normal to the growth surface, whereas transitions in quantum wells emit only parallel to the surface. This is a key difference that can be exploited to create a variety of quantum dot devices that have no quantum well analog. Two significant problems limit the utilization of the beneficial features of SAQDs as mid-infrared emitters. One is the lack of understanding concerning how to electrically inject carriers into electronic states that allow optical transitions to occur efficiently. Engineering of an injector stage leading into the dot can provide current injection into an upper dot state; however, to increase the likelihood of an optical transition, the lower dot states must be emptied faster than upper states are occupied. The second issue is that SAQDs have significant inhomogeneous broadening due to the random size distribution. While this may not be a problem in the long term, this issue can be circumvented by using planar photonic crystal or plasmonic approaches to provide wavelength selectivity or other useful functionality.

Book excerpt: This thesis breaks new ground in the physics of photonic circuits for quantum optical applications. The photonic circuits are based either on ridge waveguides or photonic crystals, with embedded quantum dots providing the single qubit, quantum optical emitters. The highlight of the thesis is the first demonstration of a spin-photon interface using an all-waveguide geometry, a vital component of a quantum optical circuit, based on deterministic single photon emission from a single quantum dot. The work makes a further important contribution to the field by demonstrating the effects and limitations that inevitable disorder places on photon propagation in photonic crystal waveguides, a further key component of quantum optical circuits. Overall the thesis offers a number of highly novel contributions to the field; those on chip circuits may prove to be the only means of scaling up the highly promising quantum-dot-based quantum information technology.

Book excerpt: Recently, the emission of single photons with wavelength in the 1.3um telecommunication window was demonstrated for InAs quantum dots. This makes them strong candidates for applications such as quantum cryptography, and in a longer term, quantum computing. However, efficient extraction of the spontaneous emission from semiconductors still represents a major challenge due to total internal reflection at the semiconductor/air interface. This thesis work explores the integration of quantum dots, with emission at 1.3um, in photonic crystal microcavities. Photons emitted in a mode of the cavity are funneled out of the semiconductor, and thus bypass the total internal reflection. In addition, the modified density of electromagnetic states in the cavity affects the emission lifetime of the weakly coupled emitter: in resonance, we assist to an increase of the emission rate, known as the Purcell effect. Photonic crystal microcavities conveniently address this objective as they provide modes with the required small volumes and high quality factors. They also allow the engineering of the farfield pattern of the cavity modes, and thus of the collection effiency.

Devices based on semiconductor quantum dots hold great potential for the practical realisation of many of the components required in the proposed schemes. This thesis describes the development of several quantum dot devices. By integrating a quantum dot into a p-i-n diode, it was possible to control the dominant emission lines in its photoluminescence spectrum and to maximise the degree of polarisation correlation between the two photons emitted in the biexciton decay. With the same device under a magnetic field, a digital memory was demonstrated. The polarisation information of a single photon was stored as the spin of an electron inside the quantum dot, and was deterministically recovered some time later by the application of an electrical trigger. A fabrication process was developed in order to produce high quality two dimensional slab photonic crystals operating with a photonic band gap at ~ 900 nm. By placing a quantum dot into an appropriately designed H1 photonic crystal cavity, strong coupling was achieved between the dot and the monopole mode of the cavity. The vacuum Rabi splitting was found to be constant for all linear polarisations due to the unpolarised nature of the far-field of the mode. Finally, a new kind of cavity based on photonic crystal waveguides was developed. A Purcell enhancement of the in-plane spontaneous emission from a quantum dot coupled to a unidirectional photonic crystal waveguide was demonstrated.

Book excerpt: The pursuit of an integrated quantum optics system requires the ability to determine the effect of design parameters on the quantum electrodynamics regime. We develop a simple master equation for few, driven, two-level emitters in the bad cavity regime. Comparing the resulting photon-photon correlation function in the steady state with experimental data from InGaAs quantum dots coupled to a photonic crystal waveguide, we validate our model parameters for coupling strength, spontaneous decay rate and incoherent driving rate. Building upon this model, we explore the superradiant regime for InGaAs quantum dots coherently driven within a waveguide, creating a model that captures the collective behavior of two-level emitters in the bad cavity limit.

Book excerpt: The fundamental spontaneous emission rate an emitter can be modified by its photonic environment. By enhancing the spontaneous emission rate, there is a possibility of extracting multi-exciton energies through radiative decay. In this report, we explore using high Q and small volume cavities to enhance the spontaneous emission rate. We observed greater than 50 folds enhancement in the spontaneous emission from photonic crystal waveguide or microcavity using close-packed monolayer of PbS quantum dot emitters.
