Book excerpt: The past decades have witnessed the development of new materials with large nonlinear optical properties, which have made them attractive candidats for a broad spectrum of breakthrough applications in the electro-optic and photonic fields (e.g., telecommunication and computing). A deeper understanding of the relationship between, on the one hand, the chemical structure and, on the other hand, the electronic and (linear and nonlinear) optical properties has proven useful for the rational design of new efficient materials. Reaching such an understanding has attracted major interest in the scientific community worldwide in both academia and industry. Therefore, the development of new efficient NLO chromophores and materials along with commercial devices of high quality is helped via the establishment of multidisciplinary research teams combining: (i) the theoretical modeling using quantum-chemical computational calculations; (ii) the organic synthesis; (iii) the optical characterization; and (iv) the device fabrication. In this dissertation, quantum-chemistry is used to evaluate the second- and third-order NLO properties of series of new chromophores and take advantage of a feedback loop with the experimental team to understand the structure-property relationships.

Book excerpt: Two-photon absorption spectra have been measured for bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives with varying conjugation lengths and end groups. Large two-photon absorptivities are observed via nanosecond nonlinear transmission measurements in comparison to picosecond nonlinear transmission and two-photon excited fluorescence methods, which suggests a large contribution of excited-state absorption to the nanosecond nonlinear transmission results. Chromophores with conformationally locked bridges have been synthesized and the optical nonlinearity and thermal stability has been examined. It was found that relative to the normal polyene bridges, chromophores with confirmationally locked bridges exhibit improved thermal stability without a significant change in optical nonlinearity. A series of chromophores containing diarylamino donors have been synthesized and exhibit large optical nonlinearities, good thermal-thermal stabilities and enhance photochemical stabilities relative to compounds with dialkylamino donors. Functionalized versions of these chromophores have been synthesized for covalent incorporation into high performance polymers, for electro-optic applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years the world has relied on electronics for information processing. However, we are nearing the limits of traditional electronic signal processing and transmission. Optical technology will be required in order to gain processing rates above 50 GHz and a transmission distance greater than 1 meter. The optical technology is described as photonics, which is the analog of electronics. This means that photons, rather than electrons, will be used to acquire, store, transmit and process information. Many photonic applications are already in use. These include fiber-optic communication lines, diode laser sources, organic liquid-crystal displays and optical memories There are many advantages of photonics over electronics. Optical switching, for example, occurs on a femtosecond time scale. No electronic process can come close to matching that time, but optical processes can. And with optical signals, there is no electrical and magnetic interference, so there is less crosstalk between channels.

Book excerpt: This volume exposes the chemistry community to the critical role that chemistry can and must play in nonlinear optics research. In addition, it brings together those researchers who synthesize and characterize materials from a variety of systems, with those who build devices, giving chemists, physicists, and engineers a greater appreciation for the opportunities that lie ahead in understanding and developing nonlinear optical materials. The volume begins with a discussion of polarizability and hyperpolarizability from the view of a chemist. Tutorial chapters dealing with the fundamental structures and properties of second- and third-order nonlinear optical materials, measurement and characterization of these systems, theoretical considerations, application of these systems to devices, and overviews of the current state of affairs in both organic and inorganic nonlinear optical materials follow.

Book excerpt: Our program involves development and applications of second-order optical materials which are also multifunctional, i.e., they exhibit more than one functionality and in some cases, new properties derived from a combination of more than one functionality . We specifically focused on applications in electro-optic modulation and photorefracitivity. Our effort has focused on developing electro-optic chromophores which offer extended transparency in the visible (to 633 nm), large r-coefficient, as well as high thermal and temporal stability of electrically poled alignment. Earlier we have developed an electro-optic chromophore, APSS, which was processed using an isocyanate containing liquid polymer to produce a thermally stable electrically poled polyurethane based electro-optic polymer. In order to further improve on optical losses in the visible range (633nm), enhance thermal stability and achieve a better control of the poling process, we have made chemical modifications and synthesized a related chromophore APSAS. This chromophore containing linkable four hydroxy sites, permits the usage of a smaller isocyanate, tolulene diisocyanate, with broader optical transparency, to produce rigid cross-linked polyurethane structures. In addition, we tested waveguide parameters of these chromophores. A waveguide modulator was fabricated using APSS to study processing optimization of this modulator. APSS and APSAS also exhibit multifunctionality: A strong two-photon absorption, photobleaching and up-converted emission. APSS exhibits photobleaching when illuminated with high peak power femtosecond pulse lasers. Utilizing this photobleaching 3D optical data storage was illustrated with a Buggs Bunny cartoon video in which each movie frame was stored in layers 5 microns apart. The two-photon exited photosensitization using APSS was also use for a new approach of two-photon photo.

Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between the multitude of advanced research articles and the knowledge newcomers to the field are looking for, this is a timely and comprehensive monograph covering the interdisciplinary topic of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). The book not only covers the fundamentals and physico-chemical background of the ICT process, but also places a special emphasis on the latest experimental and theoretical studies that have been undertaken to understand this process and discusses key technological applications. After outlining the discovery of ICT molecules, the authors go on to discuss several important substance classes. They present the latest techniques for studying the underlying processes and show the interplay between charge transfer and the surrounding medium. Examples taken from nonlinear optics, viscosity and polarity sensors, and organic electronics testify to the vast range of applications. The result is a unique information source for experimentalists as well as theoreticians, from postgraduate students to researchers.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a useful tool for academia and researchers interested in the chemistry and applications of organic chromophores with nonlinear optical properties (NLO). This book aims to review the various types of organic chromophores reported in literature with NLO properties, such as alkynes, tetraenes, azo dyes, chalcones, heterocyclic compounds, fullerenes, perylenes, ferrocenes and polymers, their structural features, properties and their nonlinear optics. parameters. 380 chromophores with NLO properties are presented in this book. The various applications of organic NLO chromophores, in medicine as luminescent materials, molecular switches, laser technology, spectroscopic and electrochemical sensors, microfabrication and imaging, data storage, optical signal modulation, telecommunications, make this field highly sought after and explored by researchers in the last decade.

First, it provides a detailed introduction to nonlinear optical signals; starting from Glauber’s photon counting formalism, it establishes the diagrammatic formulation, which forms the backbone of nonlinear molecular spectroscopy. The main body of the thesis investigates the impact of quantum correlations in entangled photon states on two-photon transitions, with a particular focus on the time-energy uncertainty, which restricts the possible simultaneous time and frequency resolution in measurements. It found that this can be violated with entangled light for individual transitions. The thesis then presents simulations of possible experimental setups that could exploit this quantum advantage. The final chapter is devoted to an application of the rapidly growing field of multidimensional spectroscopy to trapped ion chains, where it is employed to investigate nonequilibrium properties in quantum simulations.
