Book excerpt: The Institut Max von Laue-Paul Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble regularly orga nizes workshops that deal with various applications of neutrons in physics, chemistry, biology and materials science. The workshop "Quantum Aspects of Molecular Motions in Solids" was jointly organized by the Institut Laue Langevin and the Institut fiir Festkorperforschung at the Kernforschungsan lage Jiilich and took place in September 1986 in Grenoble. Tunneling phenomena in molecular crystals were first observed with macro scopic methods like specific heat experiments and later also with NMR. Fi nally, the development of high resolution neutron scattering techniques like neutron backscattering led to direct spectroscopic observation of the tunnel split ground state. This breakthrough was achieved in 1975 at Jiilich. Since then the large variety of high-resolution techniques available in combination with high neutron flux have turned ILL into the leading laboratory in the field of tunneling spectroscopy. Since 1980 regular meetings of scientists involved in this topic have been organized every two years (Jiilich, Braunschweig, Nottingham) and have led to an intense exchange of ideas and experimental results. The present workshop is the fourth of this series and the first with published proceedings presenting the state of the art in this field. The eight review articles introduce scientists not involved in the subject to the actual discussion. Sessions on translational tunneling of light interstitials in metals as well as on tunneling phenomena in amorphous substances provide bridges to adjacent fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal hydrides are of inestimable importance for the future of hydrogen energy. This unique monograph presents a clear and comprehensive description of the bulk properties of the metal-hydrogen system. The statistical thermodynamics is treated over a very wide range of pressure, temperature and composition. Another prominent feature of the book is its elucidation of the quantum mechanical behavior of interstitial hydrogen atoms, including their states and motion. The important topic of hydrogen interaction with lattice defects and its materials-science implications are also discussed thoroughly. This second edition has been substantially revised and updated.

Book excerpt: The first unified treatment of experimental and theoreticaladvances in low-temperature chemistry Chemical Dynamics at LowTemperatures is a landmark publication. For the first time, thecumulative results of twenty years of experimental and theoreticalresearch into low-temperature chemistry have been collected andpresented in a unified treatment. The result is a text/referencethat both offers an overview of the subject and contains sufficientdetail to guide practicing researchers toward fertile ground forfuture research. Topics covered include: * Developmental history * Formulation of general problems and the main approximations usedto solve them * Specific features of tunneling chemical dynamics * One-dimensional tunneling in the path integral formalism * Special problems of two- and multidimensional tunneling * An extended presentation of pertinent experimental results

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Magnetic and Optical Resonance, Volume 15 focuses on the quantitative mathematical treatments of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This book discusses the iterative methods in the design of pulse sequences for NMR excitation; fixed point theory of iterative schemes; electron-nuclear polarization transfer in the nuclear rotating frame; and LF-and RF-DNP in doped polystyrene. The multipole NMR; solid state and solution NMR of non-classical transition metal polyhydrides; and dihydrogen complexes are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the quantum mechanical exchange in polyhydrides; low-frequency magnetic resonance with a dc SQUID and operating principles of the SQUID detector. This publication is a good source for students and researchers concerned with the application of NMR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a technology driven civilization the quest for new and smarter materials is everlasting. They are required as platforms for developing new technologies or for improving an already existing technology. The discovery of a new material is no longer chance driven or accidental, but is based on careful reasoning structured by deep understanding of the microconstituents of materials - the atoms and molecules in isolation or in an assembly. That requires fair amount of exposure to quantum and statistical mechanics. `Understanding Properties of Atoms, Molecules and Materials' is an effort (perhaps the first ever) to bring all the necessary theoretical ingredients and relevant physical information in a single volume. The book introduces the readers (first year graduates) or researchers in material chemistry/engineering to elementary quantum mechanics of atoms, molecules and solids and then goes on to make them acquainted with methods of statistical mechanics (classical as well as quantum) along with elementary principles of classical MD simulation. The basic concepts are introduced with clarity and illustrated with easy to grasp examples, thus preparing the readers for an exploration through the world of materials - the exotic and the mundane. The emphasis has been on the phenomena and what shapes them at the fundamental level. A comprehensive description of modern designing principles for materials with examples is a unique feature of the book. The highlights of the book are comprehensive introduction and analysis of Quantum states of atoms and molecules The translational symmetry and quantum states in periodic and amorphous solids Band structure and tuning Classical and quantum statistics with applications to ideal gases (photons, phonons and electrons, molecules) Quantum states in type-I and type-II superconductors (elementary theory included) Magnetic materials, materials with GMR and CMR Shape memory effects in alloys and materials 2D materials (graphene and graphene analogus) NLO and photovoltaic materials Hydrogen storage material for mitigating the looming energy crisis Quantum states in low and high band gap semiconductors Semimetals Designer materials, etc. The volume is designed and organized to create interest in the science of materials and the silent revolution that is redefining the goals and boundaries of materials science continuously.

Some fields like basic biochemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, and chemical thermody namics are well represented by many excellent texts, and new or revised editions are published sufficiently often to keep up with progress in research. However, some areas of chemistry, especially many of those taught at the graduate level, suffer from a real lack of up-to-date textbooks. The most serious needs occur in fields that are rapidly changing. Textbooks in these subjects usually have to be written by scientists actually involved in the research which is advancing the field. It is not often easy to persuade such individuals to set time aside to help spread the knowledge they have accumulated. Our goal, in this series, is to pinpoint areas of chemistry where recent progress has outpaced what is covered in any available textbooks, and then seek out and persuade experts in these fields to produce relatively concise but instructive introductions to their fields. These should serve the needs of one semester or one quarter graduate courses in chemistry and biochemistry. In some cases, the availability of texts in active research areas should help stimulate the creation of new courses. New York, New York CHARLES R. CANTOR Preface This book is not a traditional quantum chemistry textbook. Instead, it represents a concept that has evolved from teaching graduate courses in quantum chemistry over a number of years, and encountering students with diverse backgrounds.
