Book excerpt: The ChemCam instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) will include a laser-induced breakdown spectrometer (LIBS) to quantify major and minor elemental compositions. The traditional analytical chemistry approach to calibration curves for these data regresses a single diagnostic peak area against concentration for each element. This approach contrasts with a new multivariate method in which elemental concentrations are predicted by step-wise multiple regression analysis based on areas of a specific set of diagnostic peaks for each element. The method is tested on LIBS data from igneous and metamorphosed rocks. Between 4 and 13 partial regression coefficients are needed to describe each elemental abundance accurately (i.e., with a regression line of R2> 0.9995 for the relationship between predicted and measured elemental concentration) for all major and minor elements studied. Validation plots suggest that the method is limited at present by the small data set, and will work best for prediction of concentration when a wide variety of compositions and rock types has been analyzed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to show how laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and digital imaging processing can be used for indirect dating, authentication, and identification of oil paint pigments. Ten oil paint pigments from traditional and modern palettes were used for the analysis. Since synthetic paints (modern) were not available prior to the 19 century, the presence of a synthetic paint could allow for determination of whether the artwork was conserved in the past or it if was a forgery. LIBS and digital imaging processing were used to analyze the oil paint pigments in both pure form and binary mixture form. In LIBS, a laser pulse is focused on a surface and this focused pulse heats, ablates, atomizes, and ionizes the surface material. This causes the formation of a plasma and the light emitted by the plasma is collected, spectrally resolved, and detected. Elements contained in the sample can be identified by their distinctive spectral signatures. LIBS can provide both qualitative and quantitative results. It has many applications from space to defense including metal sorting, explosive and fissile material detection, lead in paint determination, heavy metal contamination in soil, identification of cultural heritage objects, etc. For this part of the study, the data was taken on pure and binary mixtures using ten shot accumulation analysis. The data was analyzed to determine what spectral emission lines could be used to uniquely determine one pigment from another. The pure and mixture pigments in single and multilayer samples were analyzed with image processing technology and algorithms. The digital images were used to create image histograms. Using the image histogram, the peak location was used to determine if differences among the pure and binary mixture pigments existed and whether unique peak locations in the histograms of the pure pigments or mixture pigments were seen.

Book excerpt: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) will be employed by the ChemCam instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity to obtain UV, VIS, and VNIR atomic emission spectra of surface rocks and soils. LIBS quantitative analysis is complicated by chemical matrix effects related to abundances of neutral and ionized species in the resultant plasma, collisional interactions within plasma, laser-to-sample coupling efficiency, and self-absorption. Atmospheric composition and pressure also influence the intensity of LIBS plasma. These chemical matrix effects influence the ratio of intensity or area of a given emission line to the abundance of the element producing that line. To compensate for these complications, multivariate techniques, specifically partial least-squares regression (PLS), have been utilized to predict major element compositions (>1 wt.% oxide) of rocks, PLS methods regress one or multiple response variables (elemental concentrations) against multiple explanatory variables (intensity at each pixel of the spectrometers). Because PLS utilizes all available explanatory variable and eliminates multicollinearity, it generally performs better than univariate methods for prediction of major elements. However, peaks arising from emissions from trace elements may be masked by peaks of higher intensities from major elements. Thus in PLS regression, wherein a correlation coefficient is determined for each elemental concentration at each spectrometer pixel, trace elements may show high correlation with more intense lines resulting from optical emissions of other elements. This could result in error in predictions of trace element concentrations. Here, results of simple linear regression (SLR) and multivariate PLS-2 regression for determination of trace Rb, Sr, Cr, Ba, and V in igneous rock samples are compared. This study focuses on comparisons using only line intensities rather than peak areas to highlight differences between SLR and PLS.

In this study, the LIBS analysis options for strontium mixture powders is expanded by increasing the number of usable strontium atomic transitions to avoid incorrect results due to spectral congestion or high strontium concentrations. The research employs double-sided tape affixed to a glass slide to hold the sample where the powder is poured onto one surface of the tape and excess dust that has not adhered is removed. This method minimizes the sample quantity needed and keeps the sample on the slide during experimentation, which also reduces costs. Herein, LIBS was used to detect and quantify the level of metal concentrations in used engine oil samples to provide valuable information about the composition of the selected material in a liquid sample. Data were obtained using multivariate analysis to develop calibration curves using LIBS spectra, which was employed for the quantification of the elements Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Mn. The relationship between the peak intensity of the metals in new engine oil samples and the metal concentrations in used engine oil samples were analyzed to minimize the matrix effect and the interference of element lines after which the atomic emission observed in LIBS spectra of used engine oil and new engine oil were compared. C2 molecular band emissions were also used to determine the degree of the engine oil degradation. Next, calibration models were developed for samples with high species concentrations. A partial least squares regression model was developed for calibration models to overcome matrix effect problems of some lines of each metal. This research successfully used the LIBS technique to determine the degree of engine oil degradation. This study established that used engine oil analysis using the LIBS technique can be utilized to maintain engines in good condition and to prevent engine failure. This paper presents the key findings and conclusions regarding the application of LIBS. Finally, although this technique shows many benefits and reliable results, challenges remain in terms of matrix effects, spectral pre-processing, model calibration, and instrumentation.

Book excerpt: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been established as a rapid, in situ, and real-time spectroscopic analytical technique for material characterization. It is very handy for the study of all kinds of materials irrespective of their state. After being used for a Mars mission, LIBS has gained global attention and many scientific researches are investigating its applications. The main objective of this dissertation is to study the possibility of using laser spectroscopic sensing techniques for material characterization and if possible, to develop methodologies. Studying molecular emission spectra for elemental analysis is a relatively new trend in the spectroscopic field. Molecular emission from SrCl and SrO observed in LIBS spectra were analyzed and compared with atomic emission from Sr. Calibration models were developed using both molecular bands and atomic spectral peaks. The determination of nutritional elements in crops, vegetables, and fruits is very important to evaluate their nutritional status. The LIBS technique was applied to identify the nutritional elements present in cauliflower and broccoli, and to evaluate the difference between organic and conventional vegetables in terms of nutritional elements. Principal component analysis (PCA) and one-to-one comparison using Student's t-test were employed for discrimination between organic and conventional vegetable flowers. Early iron and steel production in the state of Pennsylvania (United States) mostly utilized blast furnaces that were operated by charcoal as a primary fuel, followed by anthracite, then coke. The process left behind a by-product known as blast furnace slag. Blast furnace slag, non-metallic in nature, appears to have various industrial applications. LIBS was used for the analysis of charcoal blast furnace slags and qualitative as well as quantitative analyses were demonstrated. To evaluate the possibility of using the LIBS technique to detect and quantify rare earth elements, three consecutive studies were executed. Firstly, pure oxides of six rare earth elements were studied and then real samples directly taken from natural ores were analyzed. In the third step, two rare earth elements (Eu and Yb) in aqueous solutions were studied by underwater LIBS and the pressure effect on the plasma emission is discussed.

Book excerpt: When the output from a pulsed laser is forced onto a small spot of a sample, optically induced plasma, called laser-induced plasma (LIP) is formed at the surface. The plasma is formed when the laser power density exceeds the breakdown threshold value of the surface. The plasma can be used in sampling but is proposed as a source for atomic emission spectrometry (AES). In this case the technique is referred to as laser induced breakdown (emission) spectrometry (LIBS). The spectrally and temporally resolved detection and subsequent determination of the specific atomic emission reveals analytical information about the elemental composition of the sample, including solids, liquids and gases. This book is devoted to the analytical technique of laser-induced breakdown spectrometry. An introduction covering some basic principles of atomic emission spectrometry, analytical performance characteristics, and a comparison to more conventional techniques provides background information for the reader. The book is then conveniently divided into three parts: the first part described the instrumentation required and options available, the second part on fundamental studies of the laser plasma, and the third part on applications. Finally the future development of LIBS is presented.
