Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of medical data using engineering tools is a rapidly growing area, both in research and in industry, yet few texts exist that address the problem from an interdisciplinary perspective. Epileptic Seizures and the EEG: Measurement, Models, Detection and Prediction brings together biology and engineering practices and identifies the aspects of the field that are most important to the analysis of epilepsy. Analysis of EEG records The book begins by summarizing the physiology and the fundamental ideas behind the measurement, analysis and modeling of the epileptic brain. It introduces the EEG as a measured signal and explains its use in the study of epilepsy. Next, it provides an explanation of the type of brain activity likely to register in EEG measurements, offering quantitative analysis of the populations of neurons that contribute to both scalp and cortical EEG and discussing the limitations and effects that choices made in the recording process have on the data. The book provides an overview of how these EEG records are and have been analyzed in the past, concentrating on the mathematics relevant to the problem of classification of EEG. The authors use these extracted features to differentiate between or classify inter-seizure, pre-seizure and seizure EEG. The challenge of seizure prediction The book focuses on the problem of seizure detection and surveys the physiologically based dynamic models of brain activity. Finally, the book addresses the fundamental question: can seizures be predicted? Through analysis of epileptic activity spanning from 3 hours to 25 years, it is proposed that seizures may be predictable, but the amount of data required is greater than previously thought. Based on the authors’ extensive research, the book concludes by exploring a range of future possibilities in seizure prediction.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, the aim of this book was to interest clinical neuroscientists in the application of neurometrics to the evaluation of brain dysfunction in neurological patients. This methodology was hoped to produce substantial improvement in the neurological medical care of the general population at the time. In the previous 15 years, as a result of the development of minicomputers and their application to the quantitative analysis of electrophysiological phenomena, there had been a great expansion of knowledge about the electrical activity of the brain. This activity yielded a great variety of information about brain functions. Neurometrics is a methodology, based on quantitative measurements of the brain electrical activity, for evaluating anatomical integrity, developmental maturation, and the mediation of sensory, perceptual, and cognitive processes. This book focuses on practical clinical applications and the theoretical and experimental formulations on which these are based.

Book excerpt: Neuro-psychopharmacology covers the proceedings of the 11th Congress of the Collegium Internationale Neuro-psychopharmacologicum, held in Vienna on July 9-14, 1978. The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, and approaches in neuropsychopharmacology. The selection first offers information on the long-lasting effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on monoaminergic mechanisms and enhanced monoamine behavioral responses following repeated electroconvulsive shock to rats and their relevance to ECT. The book also underscores the ECT effects on mineral metabolism and neuroendocrine function. The publication reviews the genetic components in the mechanism of action of lithium; genetics and lithium ion metabolism in affective disorders; and pharmacogenetics and the pharmacologic challenge strategy in clinical research. The text also examines the influence of peptides in affective disorders and HLA antigens in affective disorders and cycloid psychoses. Discussions also focus on the biological and clinical basis of the therapeutic effects of benzodiazepines; effects of benzodiazepines on the electrical activity of the central nervous system; and diazepam metabolism in healthy subjects and patients with heart failure, renal failure, and hepatic cirrhosis. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in neuropsychopharmacology.

Book excerpt: Advances in epilepsy in recent decades have allowed for improved algorithms for diagnosis and a common understanding of terminology with the development of the International Classifications of Seizures and the Epilepsies. Nevertheless, no common system exists for the estimation of epilepsy severity or its impact on quality of life. Therefore, epileptologists lack the ability to make quantitative assessments of individual patients for comparison of care or for meta-analyses in clinical trials. This book on the Quantitative Assessment of Epilepsy Care approaches this omission by addressing the potential application of clinimetrics within the framework of epilepsy treatment. Clinimetrics is a fast growing discipline concerned with the quantification of clinical symptoms with respect to decision making relating to diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. These methods allow for the development and validation of clinical scoring systems. For example, the Glasgow Coma Scale is widely used. As a chronic disorder, epilepsy would benefit from clinimetric methodology to create uniformity and to allow for comparisons among evaluations. In addition, epileptologists have not yet developed assessments of health related quality of life to define the overall condition of the chronic epilepsy patient and various therapeutic endpoints. While clini metric tools are essential for research, they will also be useful in clinical practice for the care of individual patients by documenting status and changes over time. This treatise will provide critical analyses of whether existing rating scales and techniques are valid to use, and which types of scales and techniques require further development.
