This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to optimize a method to quantify compounds responsible for taste and odor problems (i.e., geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol) at very low concentrations that are in finished drinking water in the presence of wastewater and algal derived contaminants/interferents. A polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fiber was used for headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) to improve the extraction efficiency of the taste and odor compounds from model and raw source water samples. Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometery (GC/MS) in full scan mode was used to analyze the compounds adsorbed onto the fiber. The following parameters were optimized in order to enhance extraction efficiency: extraction temperature, extraction time, desorption time, sonication temperature, sonication time and GC/MS configuration and temperature program. After optimization, the method provided a linear response from 1 to 300 ng/L for 2-MIB, geosmin and camphor. The Method Detect Limits (MDLs) for this method were 0.81 ng/L, 0.42 ng/L and 0.84 ng/L for 2-MIB, geomin and camphor respectively, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for 2-MIB, geosmin and camphor were 7.43 ng/L, 6.93 ng/L and 6.93 ng/L respectively. After HS-SPME optimization, raw source water samples were successful analyzed for taste and odor compounds with interfering analytes with similar mass charged fragments and elution times. This method proves that low detection limits as well as exact molecular confirmation for taste and odor compounds can be achieved in GC/MS full scan mode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an updated evaluation of the characterization and management of taste and odour (T&O) in source and drinking waters. Authored by international experts from the IWA Specialist Group on Off-flavours in the Aquatic Environment, the book represents an important resource that synthesizes current knowledge on the origins, mitigation, and management of aquatic T&O problems. The material provides new knowledge for an increasing widespread degradation of source waters and global demand for high quality potable water. Key topics include early warning, detection and source-tracking, chemical, sensory and molecular diagnosis, treatment options for common odorants and minerals, source management, modelling and risk assessment, and future research directions. Taste and Odour in Source and Drinking Water is directed towards a wide readership of scientists, engineers, technical operators and managers, and presents both practical and theoretical material, including an updated version of the benchmark Drinking Water Taste and Odour Wheel and a new biological wheel to provide a practical and informative tool for the initial diagnosis of the chemical and biological sources of aquatic T&O.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Science, Volume 2: Sensory Assessment of Water Quality presents the methods for sensory water quality assessment. This book discusses the various aspects of the problem of impaired taste and odor of water. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the significance attributed to sensory assessment of water quality. This text then examines the results obtained on sensory water quality assessment and on general water quality appraisal. Other chapters describe the 20 types of drinking water and consider the effects of the sensory water quality assessment factors on water consumption. This book discusses as well the types of chemical compounds present and their relation to water taste. The final chapter deals with the number of applications and recommendations to assess sensory water quality aspects at least weekly in the case of surface water supplies by making an inquiry among the consumers located in the area served. This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

Book excerpt: This new edition of The Drinking Water Handbook is thoroughly revised and updated and includes a comprehensive discussion of "forever chemicals," as well as the herbicide atrazine in drinking water. It presents the latest coverage of contaminants in water, such as personal care products and pharmaceuticals (PCPPs) and endocrine disruptors, and examines the security requirements for waterworks and ancillary procedures. It examines the process of producing drinking water— from sources of water, to the purification process, through distribution systems to the tap, and then to the actual use and reuse of water. It also presents the latest advancements in treatment technologies and reviews new laws and regulations related to drinking water as well. Thoroughly revised and updated, including a comprehensive discussion of the Flint, Michigan, lead contamination event. Offers a systematic, easy-to-understand explanation of the many processes employed to make water safe to drink. Examines what is being done to mitigate growing concerns about disinfection by-products and PPCPs in water. Provides coverage of individual contaminants found in water. Investigates the physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters that must be modified to produce potable water.

Book excerpt: Tastes and odors in tap water are the leading source of customer complaints. Although common tastes and odors in tap water are harmless, many customers perceive them as an indication the water could be unsafe to drink. This field guide provides all the information water utilities need to diagnose and remove objectionable tastes and odors at the tap. With this handy book, you will be able to: determine the source and cause of any taste or odor: raw water source, treatment plant, distribution system, or customer plumbing; provide good samples to your laboratory for testing; know how to control tastes and odors and prevent them from occurring, no matter what the cause; and make proper treatment choices to remove tastes and odors.
