Book excerpt: This report describes the use of a well-established carbon budget model for the Canadian forest sector to investigate the carbon budget of Ontario's forest ecosystems. It first reviews the model and its components, then presents results of model runs using input data mainly based on a 1985 forest biomass inventory database. Model simulations begin in 1989 with simulated initial ecosystem conditions that are the endpoint of a 70-year retrospective model run for the period 1920-1989. Results are discussed with regard to forest age structure, forest carbon distribution & stocks, and ecosystem carbon fluxes. The final section includes discussion of the contribution of Ontario forest ecosystems to Canada's carbon budgets and recommendations for further research.

Book excerpt: "Forest carbon and how it changes over time provides an indicator of the sustainability of forest management. It is also a sign of sequestration or emission of carbon dioxide between forests and the atmosphere that can affect the mitigation of atmospheric greenhouse gas accumulation and global climate change. To address the need for information on Ontario's forest carbon budget, a large-scale forest carbon modelling project was initiated. The background and objectives of this project are described in this report. Three complementary approaches are being used to estimate large-scale forest carbon storage in Ontario's forests: (1) the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBMCFS), (2) a modified version of FORCARB, which is the model developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service to estimate carbon in U.S. forests, and (3) direct estimation of forest biomass carbon using Ontario's growth and yield and forest resources inventory data (CAM, the Carbon Allometry Method)."--Docment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report has been prepared in response to an identified need to provide guidance to forest managers seeking to report on a carbon budget at the scale of the forest management unit. Key concepts, tasks, and methods related to carbon budgeting are first reviewed, and a few points gleaned from research carried out in Canadian model forests are summarized. Carbon budgeting is then explained with reference to three distinct tasks: obtaining a baseline measurement of the amount of carbon in a particular forest at a given time; measuring the change to that stock over time; and evaluating the likely impact of various management activities on future changes to the carbon budget. Information needed in order to apply these steps is given, with a focus on how to use existing inventories to record carbon stocks & fluxes. The report concludes with a listing of some activities that could help to store carbon in forests.

Book excerpt: Towards the Balance and Management of the Carbon Budget of the Biosphere The current state of misunderstanding of the global C cycle and our failure to resolve an issue that has been debated for 100 years (Jones and Henderson-Sellers, 1990) speaks loudly about the limitations of modem science when faced with the complexity of the biosphere. Efforts to understand and balance the global C budget have gone through several phases. First was a holistic view of the C budget as part of efforts to understand the geochemistry of the Earth (e. g. , Clarke, 1908). Next, came a period of data collection and sythesis which focused on the diversity of sectors of the biosphere. This phase culminated in the early 1970's with the realization that humans were greatly impacting the global C cycle as measured at the Mauna Loa Observatory (Keeling et al. , 1973). New syntheses of the global C budget emerged at this time (Woodwell and Pacan, 1973; Bolin et al. , 1979). The next phase was one of controversy and intense focus on particular sectors of the biosphere. The controversy rested on discrepancies about the role of the terrestrial biota in the global C cycle and the failure to account for sufficient C sinks to absorb all the C emitted by land-use change in the tropics (Woodwell et al. , 1978, 1983; Houghton et al. , 1983).

Book excerpt: In view of the current global scenario, which highlighted the importance of sustainable development and sustaining natural resources, the theme selected for the 2nd Regional ECOMOD 2007 Conference was indeed appropriate. This conference has generated overwhelming interest and I am sure the participants have focussed diligently on the serious issues concerning important environmental issues and steps needed to be taken towards a sustainable development and management of our natural resources and environment. As governments in the Asian region introduce new initiatives and development policies to rejuvenate and protect their environment and natural resources, it is imperative that universities and research institutions play a fundamental role in ensuring that the objectives of these policies are realized. Such institutions can complement government proposals by embarking on research that is relevant and valuable to the needs of respective nations and pursuing extensive research so that the outcome and technology generated can be transferred effectively to the end users. This concerted effort by all the researchers from different fields to improve and manage our natural resources should be lauded. I strongly believe that this conference is an extraordinary testimony to our capacity building at regional and local levels. I believe USM has something interesting to share with all of you in this area. Finally, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, I hope readers will find this book of proceedings useful, informative and stimulating.

Book excerpt: This study assessed the temporal and spatial variability in forest growth & carbon storage to provide a comprehensive estimate of the carbon budget for boreal ecosystems in the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in northern Ontario. In the study, stand-level growth & carbon dynamics were simulated using TRIPLEX1.0, a new process-based forest growth & carbon dynamics model. The model was recently calibrated & tested using field measurements collected in Ontario, and was validated using 49 permanent sample plots in the Model Forest. Simulated carbon storage (net primary productivity, forest biomass, and soil carbon) are compared with field data and results from other studies on Canadian boreal forests. Estimates of carbon based on stand variables & analysis of the net carbon balance suggest whether the Model Forest ecosystem was acting as a carbon sink. The results provide information needed by local forest managers to develop ecological & carbon-based indicators and to monitor the sustainability of their forest ecosystems.

Book excerpt: This report describes a project to advance knowledge of boreal mixedwood management by testing techniques for achieving productive mixtures of conifers & hardwoods at operational scales. The project is applying treatments in aspen-dominated boreal mixedwood stands at two sites in north-east Ontario. Contrasting approaches are being compared (blended mixtures versus mosaics, partial cutting versus herbicide application, shade-tolerant versus shade-intolerant conifer regeneration) to help identify best practices. Treatment effectiveness is to be assessed by measuring regeneration growth, vegetation succession, soil nutrient dynamics, and changes in invertebrate populations. The report includes information on the site characteristics, treatments, pre- & post-harvest measurement methods, data analysis, knowledge transfer from the project, and project challenges & prospects.

Ten forest management activities organized in four themes were examined: stand establishment (site preparation, planting, and vegetation management), growth enhancement (thinning, fertilization, and genetic improvement), forest protection (from forest fires, and insect and disease infestations), and harvesting (controlling the area occupied by roads, skid trails and landings, and reducing the area disturbed by harvesting)."--Document.
