Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "World Visions can conceive of everything except alternative world visions." If this pronouncement by Umberto Eco is right, how can any ethnic group conceive of living with another group on the same territory - in Canada or elsewhere - if their world visions are incompatible? Can we sidestep incompatible world visions or should we try to understand them? Figured Worlds explores the possibilities of equilibrium between commitments to mutual understanding and the framing of strategies of negotiation. This collection begins its rich analytical investigation by describing how people - Australian Aborigines, New Zealand Maori, Japanese, and Africans - first learn the figured worlds of their own culture, made up of sensations, affirmations and will, prophecy, revelation, myth, dream, and metamorphoses. It then sets out how diverse figured worlds within a given social system are related, and concludes by offering insightful mappings of the dynamics of these relations, perceived in both their existential-ontological aspects, as well as their material-practical means. Comprising scholarship that is half Canadian and half British, this work offers important foundational perspectives into the thought worlds of cultures found within other cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In past treaties, the Aboriginal people of Canada surrendered title to their lands in return for guarantees that their traditional ways of life would be protected. Since the 1950s, governments have reneged on these commitments in order to acquire more land and water for hydroelectric development. James B. Waldram examines this controversial topic through an analysis of the politics of hydroelectric dam construction in the Canadian Northwest, focusing on three Aboriginal communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He argues that little has changed in our treatment of Aboriginal people in the past hundred years, when their resources are still appropriated by the government “for the common good.” Using archival materials, personal interviews and largely inaccessible documents and letters, Waldram highlights the clear parallel between the treatment of Aboriginal people in the negotiations and agreements that accompany hydro development with the treaty and scrip processes of the past century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the parasites of Canadian fishes published between the years 1978 and 1993, inclusive, is assembled as Parasite-Host and Host-Parasite lists. The 925 named species of parasites are reported on 292 species of Canadian fishes. The Parasite-Host list is organized on a taxonomic basis and identifies for each species its habitat (freshwater, marine, or brackish), site of occurence in its host(s), species host(s), known geographic distribution within Canadian waters, and the published source for each host and localty record. The Host-Parasite list is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts and is accompanied by data on the known Canadian distribution of the parasites. For both the Parasite-Host and Host-Parasite lists, a "Remarks" section containing explanatory comments concerning systematics, nomenclature, and notes on other specific items is included as warranted. In addition to listing the cited references, as supplentary list of references is included to cover other Canadian literature on fish parasites.
