They used to be a source of great pleasure to a certain little child, especially when her father or mother could be induced to "talk about Russia," and add personal recollections to the suggestions of the pictures. They were, in fact, the child's first conscious connection with that vast country. Her parents told her it was her native land, and they introduced to her by description some of its inhabitants.
