This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vasilii Fedorovich Malinovskii (1765-1814) is a name which has hitherto lacked true resonance in the history of Russian culture. Tt is of course a name known to all students of Alexander Pushkin's biography, for Malinovskii was the first Director of the new Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum, if, sadly, for only the first three of the young poet's years at the school. For those scholars conversant with the intellectual and literary life of the "beautiful beginning" of the reign of Alexander I's reign Malinovskii has his little niche for his remarkable Rassuzhdenie 0 mire i voine (1803) and less for his Osennie vechera (1803), a little-known journal limited to a mere eight weekly issues and written entirely by the editor. As regards the of his 'eighteenth-century' Malinovskii, who lived the first thirty-five years life predominantly in the reign of the great Catherine, little information encumbers the memory of even specialists of the period. Indeed, his elder brother, Aleksei Fedorovich (1762-1840), is the more likely to be remembered for his literary and translating work as well for his later position as Head of the Moscow Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which brought him into contact with Pushkin and, not unexpectedly, with Karamzin. Karamzin referred to him as "one of my few old and genuine friends", but one searches in vain for a similar accolade for VasiIii Fedorovich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quaker Pioneers in Russia We have in our possession a number of pictures, some lithographs, others coloured prints, which were bought in the city of Petersburg nearly eighty years ago. They used to be a source of great pleasure to a certain little child, especially when her father or mother could be induced to "talk about Russia," and add personal recollections to the suggestions of the pictures. They were, in fact, the child's first conscious connection with that vast country. Her parents told her it was her native land, and they introduced to her by description some of its inhabitants. For instance, they spoke of Theodosia, the maid who was so often guilty of drinking out of the night-light glass the oil on which the little float depended for feeding its dim flame. It was a strange taste of the maid's the child thought, and it was a pity that, in order to gratify it, she took oil that was not her own. They told her also of the frosty morning when the same girl had rushed screaming to her mistress declaring that the bed was on fire upstairs! The crackling and flashing of the electric sparks her own energetic parting of the bedclothes had induced, could be nothing less than real fire "she was sure." Book Synopsis Quaker Ways in Foreign Policy by : Robert O. Byrd
Download or read book Quaker Ways in Foreign Policy written by Robert O. Byrd and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1960-12-15 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three hundred years the Society of Friends, or Quakers, has been forwarding to governments recommendations on foreign policy, and it has often been in the vanguard of thought in its social and political views. In this study, Dr. Byrd brings together and states carefully and accurately those beliefs, principles, attitudes, and practices which have been fundamental to the Quaker approach. He illustrates and verifies his statement by an analytical Friends acting in official and semi-official capacities, which relate to foreign policy and international relations. Dr. Byrd’s systematic exposition of the modern Quaker’s theory of international relations offers a stimulating antidote to the realpolitik school of thought. His account of the Quaker interest in international affairs from 1647 to the present underlines for the diplomatic historian the role of morality in diplomacy, the influence of public opinion upon policy, and the part played by groups like Friends in shaping public attitudes. As Hans J. Morgenthau comments in his Foreword, “In a world which uses Christian ethics for un-Christian ends it is indeed moving to follow the historical trail of a Christian sect which seeks to transform itself and political society in the image of Christian teaching. . . . In their convictions, achievements, and sufferings the Quakers bear witness to the teachings of Christianity; in their failures they bear witness to the insuperable stubbornness of the human condition. . . . not the least of the merits of Professor Byrd’s book is his ability to convey through the movement of his mind and pen something of that moving quality which makes the Quaker approach to foreign policy, if nothing else, a noble experiment in Christian living.”

Book Synopsis Histories of Experience in the World of Lived Religion by : Sari Katajala-Peltomaa
Download or read book Histories of Experience in the World of Lived Religion written by Sari Katajala-Peltomaa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'At a historic moment, when religion shows all its social and political strength in various post-modern societies around our globe, this fascinating collection of studies from the Middle Ages to twentieth-century Europe demonstrates all the richness and innovative force of investigating individual and shared experiences when questioning the cultural, political and social place of religion in society. It also makes known in English the work of a series of Finnish historians elaborating together a pioneering vision of the notion of experience in the discipline of history.' - Piroska Nagy, Universite du Quebec a Montreal, Canada This open access book offers a theoretical introduction to the history of experience on three conceptual levels: everyday experience, experience as process, and experience as structure. Chapters apply 'experience' to empirical case studies, exploring how people have made and shared their religion through experience in history. This book understands experience as a simultaneously socially constructed and intimately personal process that connects individuals to communities and past to future, thereby forming structures that create and direct societies. It represents the crossroads of a new field of the history of experience, and an established tradition of the history of lived religion. Chapters offer a longue duree view from the fourteenth-century heretics, via experiences of miracle, madness, sickness, suffering, prayer, conversion and death, to the religious artisanship of soldiers in the Second World War frontlines. It concentrates on Northern Europe, but includes materials from Italy, France and United Kingdom.
