Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this investigation of Quakers in early America, Sarah Crabtree elaborates on the tensions caused by Quakers conception of themselves as people beholden not to states but to Christ. Quakers were no less than a triple threat to their governments because they claimed loyalties above and beyond the state, resisted the military strategies that were used to bolster the state, and became political activists pushing for reform. In resisting both the compulsion and the exercise of state power, Quakers put forth alternative definitions of nation and citizenand yet, many Quakers often found themselves drawn to political and social reform efforts that required recognizing and engaging with nations and states. Crabtree argues that the resulting conflicts between obligations to church and state illuminate similar contemporary conflicts."

Download or read book The Education of the Southern Belle written by Christie Farnham and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the whole range of social issues surrounding the education of women in the southern US during the first half of the 19th century. Noting that women's colleges and seminaries strove to maintain an academic standard equal to that of men's, while reinforcing the society's construction of femininity, delves into the tension which that disparity created among educators, and the strategies they used to deny it. Draws heavily from diaries, notebooks, and other personal papers. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book White Supremacy in Children's Literature written by Donnarae MacCann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This penetrating study of the white supremacy myth in books for the young adds an important dimension to American intellectual history. The study pinpoints an intersecting adult and child culture: it demonstrates that many children's stories had political, literary, and social contexts that paralleled the way adult books, schools, churches, and government institutions similarly maligned black identity, culture, and intelligence. The book reveals how links between the socialization of children and conservative trends in the 19th century foretold 20th century disregard for social justice in American social policy. The author demonstrates that cultural pluralism, an ongoing corrective to white supremacist fabrications, is informed by the insights and historical assessments offered in this study.
