The work is very important to the genealogists who is interested in tracing early immigrants to Penn's Colony. This book is a chronological list of Quaker immigrants who registered with the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends, upon their arrival in Philadelphia. This meeting house is the largest of all Quaker meeting in the province. The information is based on the certificates of removal from the Meetings of Friends of which they were members in other countries and other colonies. A large proportion of the Quakers who immigrated into the Province of Pennsylvania took up residence in Philadelphia. Of the nineteen monthly meetings established in Pennsylvania prior to 1750, the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting easily ranks first in the number of certificates received. As a rule, the certificates give the following information: name, date of certificate, former place of residence, former meeting, date of receipt, and other details of quaint and useful interest.

Book excerpt: "This book reveals the central role that women played in creating and perpetuating an elite class in the foremost city of colonial British America Early in the eighteenth century, as the city's major merchant families sought to reinforce their power over both newcomer immigrants and upwardly mobile middling sorts, they endeavored to remake themselves into a colonial version of the English gentry." "This book highlights how the intersection of gender and class identities powerfully shaped the lives of privileged women in colonial Philadelphia. This account is based on extensive archival research that includes women's letters and diaries, materials from cultural organizations, British prescriptive literature, Anglican and Quaker religious records, and newspapers. This important study offers fresh insights into colonial America, women's history, urban history, and the British Atlantic world."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quaker Arrivals at Philadelphia 1682-1750: Being a List of Certificates of Removal, Received at Philadelphia Monthly, Meeting or Friends The following list of certificates Of removal, now printed for the first time, will be of value, it is believed, not only to genealogists but to historians, in the broader sense, interested in investigating the early migratory movement to Penn's Colony. As the metropolis of the new Province on the Delaware, Philadelphia became better known abroad than any other part of Penn sylvania, and a large proportion of the steady stream Of Quaker colonists which poured into the Province made this city its Objective point. Of the nineteen monthly meetings established in Pennsylvania prior to 1750, as the writer's investigation Of the manuscript records has shown, Philadelphia Monthly Meeting easily ranks first as to the number of certificates received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stranger Citizens examines how foreign migrants who resided in the United States gave shape to citizenship in the decades after American independence in 1783. During this formative time, lawmakers attempted to shape citizenship and the place of immigrants in the new nation, while granting the national government new powers such as deportation. John McNelis O'Keefe argues that despite the challenges of public and official hostility that they faced in the late 1700s and early 1800s, migrant groups worked through lobbying, engagement with government officials, and public protest to create forms of citizenship that worked for them. This push was made not only by white men immigrating from Europe; immigrants of color were able to secure footholds of rights and citizenship, while migrant women asserted legal independence, challenging traditional notions of women's subordination. Stranger Citizens emphasizes the making of citizenship from the perspectives of migrants themselves, and demonstrates the rich varieties and understandings of citizenship and personhood exercised by foreign migrants and refugees. O'Keefe boldly reverses the top-down model wherein citizenship was constructed only by political leaders and the courts. Thanks to generous funding from the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot and the Mellon Foundation the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other Open Access repositories.
