This book was released on 2007 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a suite of hydrodynamic simulations, anisotropies in the Lyalpha flux correlation function due to redshift-space distortions and spectral smoothing are investigated for 1:8 ≤ z ≤ 3, further enabling future applications of the Alcock-Paczynski test with Lyalpha correlation measurements. Sources of systematic error including limitations in mass-resolution and simulation volume, prescriptions for galactic outflow, and the observationally uncertain mean flux decrement are considered. The latter is found to be dominant. An approximate solution for obtaining the zero-lag cross-correlation for arbitrary spectral resolution is presented, as is a method for implementing the resulting anisotropy corrections while mitigating systematic uncertainty.

Book Synopsis Cosmological Hydrodynamic Simulations of the Lyman-alpha Forest by : Yu Zhang
Download or read book Cosmological Hydrodynamic Simulations of the Lyman-alpha Forest written by Yu Zhang and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several three dimensional, multi-species, cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of the formation and evolution of Ly$alpha$ forest absorbers were performed in three CDM-like cosmological models: the standard CDM model (SCDM), the flat CDM model with a nonzero cosmological constant ($Lambda$CDM) and the open CDM model (OCDM). Synthetic spectra along random lines-of-sight were generated and analyzed by using a powerful spectrum analysis method designed to mimic observational data reduction. The SCDM model was studied in great detail and found to be in excellent agreement with observations in: the slope and shape of the column density distribution, the value and distribution of the Doppler parameter and the equivalent width, the evolution of line density, effective opacity and flux decrement, etc. A number of sensitive tests were devised to compare and contrast different cosmological models, and it is found that both the SCDM and the $Lambda$CDM models agree with observations quite well, while the OCDM model fails to match most of the observational data satisfactorily. It is discovered that the low column density (log $Nsb{HI} simeq$ 13.3 and log $Nsb{HeII} simeq$ 14.5) H sc I and He sc II Ly$alpha$ absorbers which are optically-thin at the line center ($tausb0

Book excerpt: The comparison of quasar absorption spectra with numerically simulated spectra from hierarchical cosmological models of structure formation promises to be a valuable tool to discriminate among these models. We present simulation results for the column density, Doppler b parameter, and optical depth probability distributions for five popular cosmological models.
Book Synopsis Cold Gas at High Redshift by : M.N. Bremer
Download or read book Cold Gas at High Redshift written by M.N. Bremer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen increasing evidence that the main epoch of galaxy formation in the universe may be directly accessible to observation. An gular fluctuations in the background relict radiation have been detected by various ground-based instruments as well as by the COBE satellite, and suggest that the epoch of galaxy formation was not so very early. Combined optical and radio studies have found galaxies at redshifts above 2. 0, systems that at least superficially show the characteristics expected of large galaxies seen only shortly after their formation. And absorption lines in the spectra of quasars seem to be telling us that most cold gas at early to intermediate cosmological epochs was in clouds having roughly galaxy sized masses. What kinds of new observations will best help us study this high redshift universe in future? What new instruments will be needed? These are questions that loom large in the minds of the Dutch astronom ical community as we celebrate 25 years of operation of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. Celebration of this Silver Jubilee has included a birthday party (on 23 June, 1995), a commemorative volume looking at both the history and the future of the facility ("The Westerbork Observa tory, Continuing Adventure in Radio Astronomy," Kluwer 1996), and an international workshop, held in the village of Hoogeveen on 28-30 August, 1995.

Download or read book Deep Fields written by S. Cristiani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a synopsis of modern deep-field astronomy, based on the powerful telescopes and instruments developed in recent years. It is organized along topical themes, such as the extragalactic background radiation at different wavelengths, the evolution of galaxies, the history of star formation, the nature of absorbers, the reionization of the intergalactic medium, the validity of photometric redshifts, gravitational lensing, and clustering of galaxies. Stellar and substellar objects were not neglected, however, and one session was devoted to nearby bodies such as trans-Neptunian solar system objects, brown dwarfs, and stars with special characteristics.
Book Synopsis QSO Absorption Lines by : Georges Meylan
Download or read book QSO Absorption Lines written by Georges Meylan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial question of whether the majority of the narrow absorption lines observed in QSO spectra represent cosmological intervening systems or ejecta from the QSO themselves is settled. QSO absorption line spectroscopy, initially a mere technique, has matured into an essential extragalactic research tool for understanding the content of the Universe at redshifts between 0 and 4, and beyond. The only previous important meeting devoted to "QSO Absorption Lines" was held in May 1987 at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. Since that time, nearly a decade ago, research has been ex tremely active in this now well-established field of astrophysics. Theoretical stud ies and simulations have taken advantage of the constant progress in computer technology, and during these last few years, the observational results have bene fited largely from the new facillities offered by the Hubble Space Telescope in the UV wavelength range and the Keck Telescope for high-resolution spectroscopy.

Book Synopsis The Hubble Deep Field by : Space Telescope Science Institute (U.S.). Symposium
Download or read book The Hubble Deep Field written by Space Telescope Science Institute (U.S.). Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is the deepest optical image of the Universe ever obtained. It is the result of a 150-orbit observing programme with the Hubble Space Telescope. It provides a unique resource for researchers studying the formation and evolution of stars and galaxies. This timely volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the HDF and its scientific impact on our understanding in cosmology. It presents articles by a host of world experts who gathered together at an international conference at the Space Telescope Science Institute. The contributions combine observations of the HDF at a variety of wavelengths with the latest theoretical progress in our understanding of the cosmic history of star and galaxy formation. The HDF is set to revolutionize our understanding in cosmology. This book therefore provides an indispensable reference for all graduate students and researchers in observational or theoretical cosmology.
