Book excerpt: From the early days of the Internet to the present day, the World Wide Web has developed into one of the world's largest information resources. One of the first genres of web pages, which was also one of the first information resources, was the Personal Home Page (PHP). Over this same period of time, professional football in England has created the world's richest league and by extension an abundance of football-related PHPs. This book examines the role of the PHP as an information resource using the subject area of professional football in England. A holistic approach was taken so as to view the PHP in a broader context, as one information resource amongst many, including non-PHPs and even offline information resources (e.g. reference books). Within this study, football fans were interviewed along with web authors, surveys were carried out (by distributing both online and offline questionnaires) and additional research was also carried out online, examining football-related PHPs and online web collaborations. Results suggest that whilst there are many informational benefits to be found on PHPs, such as plentiful unique information, they have low levels of use amongst football fans. The study concludes by proposing an avenue to the maximisation of the informational benefit of PHPs through a blueprint for a type of communal football website called the Club Community Composite Page (CCCP). Overall, several contributions are made to the field of information science, most notably attaining an improved understanding of PHPs as unique and accurate information providers online and devising new research methods for PHP research. In particular, the method of identification of PHPs developed here will be a useful tool for future researchers of PHPs. The contributions of this work are likely to be of value to researchers working in relevant sub-fields of information science, such as information seeking, web genres, grey literature and virtual communities.

Book excerpt: This book features interviews with fifty former Everton players who have lived my boyhood dream to grace the famous Goodison turf in the royal blue jersey. My writing days began as a hobby back in 2012 when I submitted articles and match reports for a couple of Everton websites under the pseudonym, 'Blue Echo'. Inside this first edition of 'Blue Echo' interviews, these players tell their own story of their time at Everton. I sincerely hope one of your favourite players is included, and that you enjoy reading their stories. We as fans know what the club motto Nil Satis Nisi Optimum means to us. These interviews highlight exactly what being at Everton means to the players, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport: Law and Practice, Fourth Edition is the leading legal title covering sports law and practice in the UK, and at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It serves both as a comprehensive statement of applicable law and precedent, and as a very practical guide to circumnavigating a complex sector. The new edition retains and updates all of the key chapters from previous editions, including the extended sections on challenges to the actions of sports governing bodies, and on anti-doping regulation and enforcement (with an introduction to the new 2021 World Anti-Doping Code). There are important updates to the chapters on Regulating Financial Fair Play, Misconduct, Safeguarding in Sport, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and Media Rights and Sport. The Fourth Edition also adds brand new chapters dealing with: -Effective sports regulation (including the first ever comprehensive discussions of the 'general principles of law' applied by CAS panels in determining challenges to sports regulations, as well as of the principles of interpretation of sports regulations). -Best practice in sports governance (describing developments such as the strengthening of the competence and independence of boards and the emergence of independent integrity units). -Data protection law and sport (including discussion of the provisions of the Data Protection Act 2018 that facilitate the sharing of personal data by sports bodies for integrity-related purposes). -Exploiting commercially valuable sports data (explaining how sports rights-holders can fashion commercial agreements to meet the demand for sports data from the betting industry and others). -ESports (the first comprehensive treatment of the legal and practical principles underlying the regulation and commercial exploitation of the increasingly important ESports sector). Readers will also benefit from practice tips, precedent clauses, detailed explanations of key practical issues, and step-by-step analysis. This is an essential title for all sports law practitioners (solicitors and barristers, common law and civil lawyers), sports governing bodies, event organisers, clubs, participants, sports agencies and commercial partners, arbitrators, universities, and students.

Book excerpt: Few people have made such an impact on so many areas of football, in so many parts of the world, as Gordon Jago. Jago - a tall, thoughtful centre-half with Charlton Athletic - made his biggest impression as a manager. In England, he created the foundation for the greatest Queens Park Rangers side in history - leading to speculation linking him with the national job - before transforming the identity of one of the country's most notorious clubs, Millwall. Jago resigned from the Den out of principle after a controversial episode of BBC TV's Panorama and moved to the US. He spent time in Florida before settling in Texas. From there, he was engaged in the political side of the North American game and was involved in discussions for America's hosting of the 1994 World Cup and the creation of the MLS. After retiring from coaching, Jago remained heavily involved with the Dallas Cup - a key part of the cultural heritage of the North American game - and was rewarded for his services to youth football with an MBE in 2006.

Most football fans can only dream of pulling on the shirt of their favourite team and running out in front of thousands of adoring fans. Pitch invaders aside, few of us get to experience that adrenalin rush. Of those who do make it as a professional footballer, even fewer realise the giddy heights of success. In the Illustrated History of Football: Hall of Fame, cartoonist David Squires returns to celebrate those who straddle the game like giants; those talented, determined souls who were juggling tennis balls in the back streets before they could talk. There’s more than one way to attain football immortality though, and Squires also turns his comic eye to the mavericks, the pioneers, the forgotten legends and the anti-heroes. From Pele to Meazza, Maradona to Socrates, you will be taken on an unforgettable journey through the good, the bad and the Hagi.

Book excerpt: Rangers In London is the story of the nine matches between 1960 and 1971 when Britain and the World’s most domestically successful football club with the greatest and most fervent support travelled south from Glasgow to the Capital city. Almost every game seems to have thrown up something amazing or special. From the first European Cup tie played in London to a match described by the legendary and equally reticent Spurs manager, Bill Nicholson as the greatest game on earth. Alex Ferguson’s Rangers debut at Arsenal, QPR’s Rodney Marsh assaulting two players on the pitch and a teenager whisked from work in Glasgow in the morning to play in goal against a team of internationals and a world cup winner in the evening at Tottenham. And we best not forget Rangers appearances at Chelsea for the man they called Chopper either and at Highbury for a gentleman who at his peak was quite possibly the best goalkeeper in Europe. And much more… Unashamedly nostalgic and so many great stories, histories and characters to recall, celebrate and write about. In a more modest way, we try to chart the development of football at Ibrox and in London, on and off the field at a time when football was beginning to become more sophisticated, commercial and international. There’s a bit of sociology too, as we look at the emergence of football hooliganism, skinheadism and wider societal cultures in and around football at that time. Does what go around, come around with a slightly different twist? I’ll let the reader decide. But I hope you’ll enjoy taking in these matches with me, and get the same pleasure as the devoted thousands and perhaps you were one, who ‘followed on’ to London with Rangers. Win, lose or draw.

Book excerpt: 100 years of Wembley Stadium told through 100 matches. The 1923 FA Cup final – also known as the White Horse final – was the first football match played at the British Empire Exhibition Stadium. Although best remembered for its vast, well-beyond-capacity crowd, which had to be marshalled by a policeman atop a white horse, that afternoon marked the opening chapter of the long and eventful history of the stadium soon to be known simply as Wembley. Over the 100 years since that overcrowded day, Wembley has established itself as the home of the beautiful game and, almost certainly, the world’s most famous football stadium. It occupies a special place in the hearts of players and punters alike. Watching your team at Wembley is the highlight of a fan’s lifetime of support; playing there the fulfilment of a childhood dream. Its sacred pitch has been the crucible of many classic matches across the decades: World Cups have been won here, as have FA Cups, European Cups, play-off finals and more. And that hallowed turf has also seen greyhounds, stunt motorcycles, American football, plus the feet of 72,000 music fans at Live Aid in 1985. Nige Tassell chooses 100 matches - from the well known to the esoteric - that have shaped Wembley's legacy and tells a lively and original alternative history of the past 100 years of football, and of Britain. We hear a ball boy’s perspective on the FA Cup Final when Bert Trautmann broke his neck, about the other commentator of the 1966 World Cup final, and why a cup-winning team of eleven unemployed men didn't receive a trophy from a future king. Field of Dreams is the story of how football found its home.
