Research and development in these areas have been going on for some time, reaching the stage of products. The objectives of HSNMC 2004 (International Conference on High Speed Networks and Multimedia Communications) were to promote research and development activities and to encourage communication between academic researchers and engineers throughout the world in the areas related to high-speed networks and multimedia communications. The seventh edition of HSNMC was held in Toulouse, France, on June 30– July2,2004. Therewere266submissionstoHSNMCthisyearfrom34countries, which were evaluated by program committee members assisted by external - viewers. Each paper was reviewed by several reviewers. One hundred and one papers were selected to be included in these proceedings. The quality of s- missions was high, and the committee had to decline some papers worthy for publication. The papers selected in this book illustrate the state of the art, current d- cussions, and development trends in the areas of networks, telecommunication and multimedia applications. The contributions published in this book und- line the international importance of the related ?eld of research. They cover a variety of topics, such as QoS in Di?Serv networks, QoS analysis and m- surement, performance modelling, TCP modelling and analysis, MPLS for QoS provision, scheduling and resource allocation, routing, multicast, security and privacy issues, peer-to-peer applications, video applications, software and m- dleware for networks, mobile networks, mobility, satellite, mobile IP, wireless networks, WLAN, ad hoc networks, 3G/UMTS, IEEE 802.

Research in this area has been going on for some time, with results getting into development and finally reaching the stage of products. Trends in research as well as a reality check will be the purpose of this Ninth InternationalW orkshopo n Quality of Service. IWQoS isa ver y successful seriesof workshops and has established itself as one of the premier forums for the presentation and discussion of new research and ideas on QoS. The importance of this workshop series is also reflected in the large number of excellents ubmissions. Nearly 150 papers from all continents were submitted to the workshop, about a fifth of these being short papers. The program committee were very pleased witht he quality of the submissions andh ad the difficult task of selecting the relatively small number of papers which could be accepted for IWQoS2001. Due to the tough competition, many very good papers had to be rejected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book present various viewpoints on the design and - plementation of techniques for QoS engineering for Internet services. They were selected from more than 70 submissions to the 1st International workshop on “Quality of future Internet services” (QofIS) organized by COST Action 263. The main focus of the papers is on the creation, con?guration and deployment of end-to-end services over a QoS assured Internet using the IntServ (Integrated Services) and Di?Serv (Di?erentiated Services) models. The main technical p- gramme was completed by two keynote talks: IETF Chair Fred Baker opened the workshop with a discussion on major Internet development directions and Andrew M. Odlyzko of AT&T Labs Research gave the closing talk on Internet charging issues. The presentation of papers was organised in 9 sessions. The emphasis of Session 1 is on an assessment of the essential building blocks for a QoS assured Internet, i.e., queueing and scheduling, which basically de?nes the space for end-to-end services. The papers of this session discuss the bounds we may expect from these building blocks, the issues of queueing and scheduling management, and the parameters we need to tune in a dynamic implementation. Flow control and congestion control cannot be considered without regard to the dominating impact of TCP. The keyword of Session 2 is, therefore, Intern- friendly adaptation. Four papers in this session are complementary and together present an emerging understanding of a basic optimal area for such adaptation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential evolution is a very simple but very powerful stochastic optimizer. Since its inception, it has proved very efficient and robust in function optimization and has been applied to solve problems in many scientific and engineering fields. In Differential Evolution , Dr. Qing begins with an overview of optimization, followed by a state-of-the-art review of differential evolution, including its fundamentals and up-to-date advances. He goes on to explore the relationship between differential evolution strategies, intrinsic control parameters, non-intrinsic control parameters, and problem features through a parametric study. Findings and recommendations on the selection of strategies and intrinsic control parameter values are presented. Lastly, after an introductory review of reported applications in electrical and electronic engineering fields, different research groups demonstrate how the methods can be applied to such areas as: multicast routing, multisite mapping in grid environments, antenna arrays, analog electric circuit sizing, electricity markets, stochastic tracking in video sequences, and color quantization. Contains a systematic and comprehensive overview of differential evolution Reviews the latest differential evolution research Describes a comprehensive parametric study conducted over a large test bed Shows how methods can be practically applied to mobile communications grid computing circuits image processing power engineering Sample applications demonstrated by research groups in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Turkey, China, and Eastern Europe Provides access to companion website with code examples for download Differential Evolution is ideal for application engineers, who can use the methods described to solve specific engineering problems. It is also a valuable reference for post-graduates and researchers working in evolutionary computation, design optimization and artificial intelligence. Researchers in the optimization field or engineers and managers involved in operations research will also find the book a helpful introduction to the topic.
