Book excerpt: This book describes the second phase of the Qinghai–Tibetan railway construction project and is the first technological book discussing the geological routing of the Qinghai–Tibetan railway project on the “roof of the world.” Based on practical experience of railway construction work, it provides a substantial number of examples with detailed descriptions and conclusions. The complex geological environment of the Qinghai–Tibetan railway as well as the selection and optimization of the route are illustrated vividly and clearly with quotes, figures, photos, and tables. Connecting Golmud and Lhasa, it has a total length of 1142 km and at the Tanggula Pass has an altitude of 5072m—higher than any other in the world. A 960 km section is on a plateau at altitudes above 4000 m, and 550 km are in the permafrost region, making it the world’s longest and highest railway in the permafrost plateau region. The book is a model for the integration of theory and practice, making it a valuable reference source for civil engineering professionals working in geological routing in permafrost plateau regions, active fault zones, meizoseismal areas, nature reserves, and regions with geohazards such as steep slopes, sand and snow drifts and geothermal hazards.

Book excerpt: Taking the Qinghai–Tibet Railway as an example, this book introduces intelligent processing for Global Positioning Data (GPS) data. Combining theory with practical applications, it provides essential insights into the Chinese Qinghai–Tibet Railway and novel methods of data processing for GPS satellite positioning, making it a valuable resource for all those working with train control systems, train positioning systems, satellite positioning, and intelligent data processing. As satellite positioning guarantees the safe and efficient operation of train control systems, it focuses on how to best process the GPS data collected, including methods for error detection, reduction and information fusion.

Book excerpt: A vivid account of China's unstoppable quest to build a railway into Tibet, and its obsession to transform its land and its people In the summer of 2006, the Chinese government fulfilled a fifty-year plan to build a railway into Tibet. Since Mao Zedong first envisioned it, the line had grown into an imperative, a critical component of China's breakneck expansion and the final maneuver in strengthening China's grip over this remote and often mystical frontier, which promised rich resources and geographic supremacy over South Asia. Through the lives of the Chinese and Tibetans swept up in the project, Fortune magazine writer Abrahm Lustgarten explores the "Wild West" atmosphere of the Chinese economy today. He follows innovative Chinese engineer Zhang Luxin as he makes the train's route over the treacherous mountains and permafrost possible (for now), and the tenacious Tibetan shopkeeper Rinzen, who struggles to hold on to his business in a boomtown that increasingly favors the Han Chinese. As the railway—the highest and steepest in the world—extends to Lhasa, and China's "Go West" campaign delivers waves of rural poor eager to make their fortunes, their lives and communities fundamentally change, sometimes for good, sometimes not. Lustgarten's book is a timely, provocative, and absorbing first-hand account of the Chinese boom and the promise and costs of rapid development on the country's people.

It is largely due to the improvement of transportation that tourism has expanded. The impacts on the ecology, degradation of destination sites, tourist experience, and economy has called for a better management of this resource. Transportation can be divided into two parts. One is the mobility infrastructure such as railway and highway, connecting and sometimes dividing the tourism destination. And another is site infrastructure which is in the tourism destination and guides the tourists to explore the place. Few places are as globally significant as the Tibetan Plateau, writes Daniel J Miller. Understanding this means looking at the region from a holistic, ecological standpoint. It has huge biodiversity resource and stores a lot of ice on the mountain. Religious affect this area so that it can remain in the harmony of the people and the nature. The Qinghai-Tibet railway is built for the policy or economic reason after is construction finished in 1st of July, 2006. This transportation greatly changed this area. The tourists' trend increases 30% in Qinghai and 40% in Tibet in 2007. The income of the tourism also increased. Then the conflict occurred, on the ecological aspect: the wildlife, the One is the stepping destroy by the tourist which may cause soil erosion or vegetation destroy. And the social aspect, tourism reform the local people's life, increases their income but also challenges the line of their religious faith. The stations along the railway became my focus point. They were like the start point, we can see the government intention, and the economic opportunity. In the meanwhile, it could also be the pollution resource and damage beginning. We can't just simply stop people from going there. Since the railway is just like a window, advertising the beautiful landscape. If the station can't access, people will find another way to access, in an uncontrolled way. So it is also an opportunity for expressing a new definition of tourism. Education, love, ecotourism. To make the place love for the people, so that they will have the ownership, they want this landscape keeps forever, so that it be an eternity. My thesis is trying to reach a more sustainable way to develop tourism in this very sensitive area, to create a couple of well-designed station stops which does strict (no access) protection for these areas. My intention is to create a system that combines education and the exploration in tourism. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5325369 Subjects: Ecotourism - Tibet, Plateau of - Planning

Book excerpt: 'I thought I'd done a bit of travelling until I read Matthew's wonderful book! Travel with him and experience his rich memories of some of the most fascinating railways in the world' Chris Tarrant, Extreme Railway Journeys. Taking his long-distance train travels to a whole new level, Matthew Woodward embarks on an intrepid journey from his home in the UK to Lhasa in deepest Tibet, for many years closed to visitors. Travelling over 20,000 kilometres on trains across Europe and Asia, he sets out to reach his objective via the little-used Trans-Manchurian route across Siberia to Beijing, and from there to the Qinghai-Tibet railway across the Tibetan Plateau - the highest railway in the world. Unprepared for what he is to experience in Lhasa, he discovers a city in modern-day China, but a place still largely living in the traditions of a truly mythical past. Those that know Woodward's writing will appreciate his honest and humorous reflections of life on the rails, and his efforts - sometimes successful - to decode cultural misunderstandings. He tells his story with the thoughtfulness and introspection you'd expect of a solo traveller and gives you the detail that makes an incredible journey like this feel possible for you, too.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine the actual impact of physical and social engineering projects in more than fifty countries from a multidisciplinary perspective. The book brings together an international team of nearly two hundred authors from over two dozen different countries and more than a dozen different social, environmental, and engineering sciences. Together they document and illustrate with case studies, maps and photographs the scale and impacts of many megaprojects and the importance of studying these projects in historical, contemporary and postmodern perspectives. This pioneering book will stimulate interest in examining a variety of both social and physical engineering projects at local, regional, and global scales and from disciplinary and trans-disciplinary perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is a magnificent project in the twenty first century. However, the problem of land desertification has arisen during the operation of the railway. Many sections of the railway roadbed are buried by sand. The ecological safety along the railway and the safe operation of the railway have attracted worldwide attention. This chapter will focus on the current situation of desertification along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, such as key desertification sections and the temporal and spatial characteristics of the occurrence of desertification. At the same time, it introduces the characteristics of the dynamic conditions of railway desertification and the source of sand material. It is divided into two parts: biological measures and engineering measures to introduce desertification control along the railway. The biological measures focus on the selection of Lolium perenne, Festuca sinensi, Elymus breviaristatus, Elymus nutans and Poa crymophila, and other alpine native sand-fixing plant materials. The engineering measures will introduce the railway desertification comprehensive prevention and control technology system that combines solidification, resistance, and transportation.
