Book excerpt: The discovery of the two families of heavy-quark-antiquark bound states, the &Ugr; and &PSgr; quarkonium spectroscopies, has played a crucial role in unravelling the nature of strong interactions. The articles collected together in this volume are concerned with the connection between quarkonia and quantum chromodynamics. They deal with potential models, spin-dependent forces, next-to-leading order QCD corrections for decay widths and energy level differences, hadronic transitions and the quark-antiquark interaction in QCD, based on perturbation theory, lattice gauge theory and QCD sum rules. Finally, a brief guide is given to the existing literature on possible new quarkonium systems which have been conjectured in connection with gluonic degrees of freedom, and with expectations for new heavy particles with colour, such as the top quark and scalar quarks.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the contributions of 47 leading researchers in high energy physics, both theorists and experimentalists, from all over the world. It discusses the application of quantum field theory to phenomenology in all areas of active research in particle physics. The topics covered include: (i) the status of precision measurements at LEP, SLC, HERA, Tevatron, and other experiments; (ii) quantum-field-theoretical techniques for calculating electroweak and QCD radiative corrections; and (iii) radiative corrections and precision experiments in future colliders (Tevatron II, LHC, NLC, Muon Collider, etc.). The confrontation in a single volume of all the high precision results reported by experimentalists, on one side, with the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) at the level of radiative corrections, on the otherside, provides a detailed test of the SM at the quantum level. And, where discrepancies appear, it gives hints of physics beyond the SM (such as supersymmetry, effective quantum field theories, etc.) which are thoroughly discussed in the book.

Book excerpt: This thesis discusses in detail the measurement of the polarizations of all S-wave vector quarkonium states in LHC proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector. Heavy quarkonium states constitute an ideal laboratory to study non-perturbative effects of quantum chromodynamics and to understand how quarks bind into hadrons. The experimental results are interpreted through an original phenomenological approach, which leads to a coherent picture of quarkonium production cross sections and polarizations within a simple model, dominated by one single color-octet production mechanism. These findings provide new insights into the dynamics of heavy quarkonium production at the LHC, an important step towards a satisfactory understanding of hadron formation within the standard model of particle physics.

Book excerpt: This past July about sixty physicists from sixteen different countries gathered at St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands for an Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics. The initial idea for the Institute arose one blustery and miserable day at Fermilab during discussions about all the wonderful summer schools that were prevalent throughout Europe but essentially nonexistent in the United States. I felt that it would be of great value to have an Institute that was located in a beautiful area and that catered primarily to the hard working experimenters who stoically suffer both the winter cold and summer heat at Fermilab. Summer schools in our field generally provide the very useful opportunity of meeting physicists who work along different lines of research, as well as the opportunity of keeping abreast of new developments. All schools tend to emphasize recent theoretical advances and phenomenology, while technical questions that are of great interest to experimenters are seldom discussed. It seemed appropriate therefore to organize a summer institute that would combine topics in accelerator design, data acquisition and the like, with the more standard theoretical fare. This is the general idea that prevailed in setting up the program of the Institute at St.

Book excerpt: This updated edition of Collider Physics surveys the major developments in theoretical and experimental particle physics and uses numerous illustrations to show how the Standard Model explains the experimental results. Collider Physics offers an introduction to the fundamental particles and their interactions at the level of a lecture course for graduate students, with emphasis on the aspects most closely related to colliders--past, present, and future. It includes expectations for new physics associated with Higgs bosons and supersymmetry. This resourceful book shows how to make practical calculations and serves a dual purpose as a textbook and a handbook for collider physics phenomenology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a broad-based text intended to help the growing student body interested in constructing and applying methods of effective field theory to solve problems in their research. It begins with a review of using symmetries to identify the relevant degrees of freedom in a problem, and then presents a variety of methods that can be used to construct various effective theories. A detailed discussion of canonical applications of effective field theory techniques with increasing complexity is given, including Fermi's weak interaction, heavy-quark effective theory, and soft-collinear effective theory. Applications of these techniques to study physics beyond the standard model, dark matter, and quantum and classical gravity are explored. Although most examples come from questions in high-energy physics, many of the methods can also be applied in condensed-matter settings. Appendices include various factoids from group theory and other topics that are used throughout the text, in an attempt to make the book self-contained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1979 Cargese Summer Institute on Quarks and Leptons was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (M. LEVY and J.-L. BASDEVANT), CERN (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholi~ue de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. GASTMANS), who, like in 1975 and 1977, had joined their efforts and worked in common. It was the 20th Summer Institute held at Cargese and the 5th one organized by the two institutes of theoretical physics at Leuven and Louvain-la Neuve. This time, the school was dominated by the impressive advances which were made in the field of perturbative ~uantum chromodyna mics and its applications to high energy phenomena involving strongly interacting particles. The unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions being well established, a new picture in particle physics emerges wherein a possible unification of weak, electromagnetic, and strong forces is put forward. Its conse~uences were also discussed in detail. Finally, to complete the picture of the present status of high energy physics, experi mentalists from the major laboratories around the world reported on the latest developments in electron-positron scattering, neutrino induced reactions, and hadron collisions. We owe many thanks to all those who have made this Summer Institute possible! Thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of NATO and its President for a generous grant and especially to the head of the Scientific Affairs Division, Dr. M. DI LULLO for his constant help and encouragements.

Book excerpt: With the termination of the physics program at PETRA, and with the start of TRISTAN and the SLC and later LEP, an era of e+e- physics has come to an end and a new one begins. The field is changing from a field of few specialists, to becoming one of the mainstream efforts of the high energy community. It seems appropriate at this moment to summarize what has been learned over the past years, in a way most useful to any high energy physicists, in particular to newcomers in the e+e- field. This is the purpose of the book. This book should be used as a reference for future workers in the field of e+e- interactions. It includes the most relevant data, parametrizations, theoretical background, and a chapter on detectors.
